"Got a question for all"
I know alot of us smell things when they have a migraine coming on. But what I wanted to know is what everyone smells. I for one found that when I have a migraine coming on I smell cat pee. Sounds gross but true. Then when I get ready to have one of those killer migs that just hit top 10 right off the bat I smell something like soured clothes. uh like you left them in the washer and they soured. Gross too but. So just wanted to see what or if anyone else smelt anything. oh and also I get a taste in my mouth like oh lets see. well like you have had change in your hand and you accidently put your finger in your mouth and tasted that metal taste I guess that is how to explain it. But the soured clothes smell is what really gets me cause I know that I will have a mig hit faster than I can prevent it. Not to mention I go around smelling everything in the house to make sure it is not soured. Even my kids clothes they think I am crazy sometimes but I will smell everything and smell my clothes several times just to make sure. I know I sound like a raging lunitic but I really am not. lol well thanks for letting me ask hope everyone is pain free today and stays that way for along time. I ask god everynight to help every mig suffer in the world. So ya'll are all in my prayers

Hi,
I have the nose of a bloodhound and I can smell something miles away. My sense of smell is magnified waaayyyy more during a migraine. I just notice all smells more...ones that bother me the most...I can't stand to smell a persons hair or skin (including my own), just because the natural oils we humans have smells like it's magnified 1000 times during a migraine. Weird huh? I usually rub some sandlewood oil or menthelatum under my nose during those times.

I don't have one smell that I get, but I too have my smell magnified way out of proportion, the other day I walked into the grocery store and almost barfed on the spot I could smell the fish the minute I walked and have never done that before, and it's way way in the back from where I was, along with perfume, and find it hard to breathe around the perfume as I can taste it as well. As for tastes in my mouth I've noticed lately that sometimes I just taste cardboard, no matter what it is I have to taste left, thought this was a side effect of meds, but have since figured out its a new symptoms of the migs.. now if I could only get the taste back and get rid of the sense of smell..

I'm glad I don't have the smells that you have though.. ugghh now that I dont' have a dryer that would just be horrible(landlord took the old one but no new one yet!)

luv

Smells are a major trigger for me. Also, even if there wasn't a smell that triggered the migraine, I'll have phantom smells that get to me. I also have a horribly altered sense of taste with my migraines. I was once at an ice-cream parlor with my family, and I swore that my ice-cream tasted like garlic! I kept asking my husband to taste it, and he looked at me funny and said if it tasted terrible, he sure didn't want to taste it. We still get a laugh out of my "here, taste this, it tastes HORRIBLE!" I did learn that if things begin to taste off that I have a migraine coming.

As to WHAT I usually smell, I smell cigarettes. Cat urine is also a phantom smell sometimes. Triggers are cigarettes, cat urine and PERFUME! I have to hold my breath if I walk through a store that has a perfume sales area by the doorway. I usually boycott any stores with strong odors. Also, although I'm a fairly quiet person, I no longer have a problem asking people (such as a co-worker) to please not wear perfume because I'm allergic to it. I've found that people will respect an allergy, but will not necessarily the fact that it actually triggers a migraine.

Sad but true, I will agree that if you say allergy as opposed to Migraine they'll stop in a second. and in my mind it is, if it causes a mig I'm allergic, cuz allergy is an unwanted response to something.. lol

glad they were cooperative for you though!

When I am getting a mig, my sense of smell is EXTREMELY heightened. Perfume goes right to a center in my brain and pulsates-it is the worst! One day I was sitting at my desk at work fighting a mig, and the smell of a box of tea bags in my desk was making me sick! I agree with the earlier post that talked about people's personal body smell being awful-even if they're clean! Yep, we're all nuts folks! But it's good to know I'm in such good nutty company! Love you all...

Smells trigger me; cant use perfume, candles, room spray etc. But when I do get one, I smell rotten wood. I can't really describe it, but it is awful. and every thing else smells way stronger than normal too. Hope this helps

Hi, My best friend tells me I have a nose like a deer. And the body odor thing, I have had that happen more times than I wish to recall. Smoke is one of my biggest triggers. It doesn't matter if I get a whiff I get a migraine. Cigars are the worst & my husband smokes cigars. He tries to sneak & smoke in the bathroom, like I won't know. Perfume is another biggie for me & when I walk pass it in the store I have to hold my breath. It's been years since I was able to wear it. Irish Spring soap will give me a headache right now. I hope everyones having a good day. Debbie

Hey everyone! I am back! Sorry I have been away for past week again. Seems like my life has been upside down for weeks now! About the smells, when I get, or am starting to get a mig, I smell burning wood! I think that someone else on this board said they smell the same thing?? I run around the house looking for a fire! I have actually learned to not look for a fire, but that could be bad though! :S When I have a mig, and around perfume I feel like just falling to the ground and bawling my eyes out! Its like kryptonite (sp?) to superman! It just kills me!!!!

I pray you all are having good days!

I can't stand the smell of human hair or bodies when I'm migraining either -- mine either. Eeewww!!! Perfume makes me nuts all the time. Anything scented -- shampoo, conditioner, lotion, makeup, etc. makes me nuts too. Everything I use is unfragranced. Going into a store with lots of scents is a sure fire way to get naseous and then here comes the headache.
