"Darvacet or Fiorinal ?"
My nurse has told me that taking darvacet and fiorinal is not healthy for me. She said I have to pick one or the other.

Which one would be more effective for migraines ( with optical pain ) ?

Any opinions welcomed ,

Eyehavepain2

p.s. ty lesherb for your opinion - am just looking for a few more -----

1. "meds"
The nurse probably told you that because darvocet is acetamenophen-based and fiorinal is ibuprofen-based. It's probably not best to use them at the same time.

I think it's trial and error. Take them separately and figure out which one works best for you.

Thanks for post sumbum . Actually she didn't say why , but my fiorinal shows aspirin in it.

Maybe I will ask her tomorrow.

Here is some info on Fiorinal;
http://www.drugs.com/fiorinal.html

and on Darvocet:
http://www.drugs.com/darvocet.html

I think they are both simply to powerful medications to be mixed together.

Also if you have Fiorinal with numbers like Fiorinal C1/2, that means it also contains codeine and since Darvocet contains codeine like ingredient it could be too much.

There are 5 meds you could try here:

Darvacet: propoxyphene and tylenol
Darvon: propoxyphene and aspirin
Fioricet: butalbital, caffeine, tylenol
Fiorinal: butalbital, caffeine, aspirin
Phrenelin: butalbital, tylenol

Since fiorinal/fioricet has caffeine in them, you will very likely be restricted in your use of thse meds for rebound h/a reasons.

Like I tell EVERYONE who takes fiorinal or fioricet, you should ask your doc about phrenelin. Phrenelin has the same anmount of butalbital and tylenol, just no caffeine.

Staying away from caffeine in our medications is important because caffeine is one of those substances that gives even non-migraineurs rebound h/a's.

If you have tummy troubles you should stay away from anything with aspirin in it...that is unless the aspirin combos are the ones that work the best. Then you'll need to talk with your doc about protecting your tummy while you are taking it.

It's all trial and error...good luck!

Thankyou thetsarisa for the links. Also , Thankyou genxgirl for the information. Both have been extremely helpful. I have decided to go with the fiorinal.

I have read alot about rebound h/a with fiorinal but nevertheless consider it the better of the two fror migraines.

btw , good morning everyone

Dear EHP~~
I usually have more than one painkiller in my arsenal. Sometimes the pain requires different levels of response. As you get to know your pain--oh gee, that sounds so awful, like a jail sentence--anyway, as you live with your headaches, you will find that one med may be better for certain types of pain, and the other may fit still another kind of headache.

For instance, I take an anti-inflammatory called anaprox, which is the brand name for naproxyn sodium. It does not help my headaches, but if I twist my neck while I sleep and wake with severe neck pain, or I pull a muscle in my back or shoulder etc, it helps quite a bit. Anaprox is like a slightly stronger form of ibuprophen, not at all narcotic.

Because of fiorinal's propensity for rebound, you might want to have both on hand. Perhaps at your next visit you could explain that you will not take them together--in fact, ask how far apart you should take them--every dr has his/her own theories--and that you would like them for higher and lower levels of pain. That is, if doing so would help you.
Best luck,
Mishkyn

7. "RE: Darvacet or Fiorinal ?"
Thanks mishken. I also suffer from arthritus in my neck and torticollis with periodic muscle spasms.

I don't think the fiorinal helps with anything but my head/eye pain. However , the darvacet does seem to help some with the neck conditions.

I am thinking about asking for an anti - inflamatory (sp?) and / or a muscle relaxer.

They are now reconsidering the darvacet and fiorinal combination if not taken together.

Any other feedback or comments ,
