"vitamin cocktail"
LAST EDITED ON Mar-10-05 AT 02:56 PM (CMT)

This is about the post by dizzypup back in Sep re the vitamin cocktail to get rid of migraines. This post got a lot of responses. I was a little apprehensive to try this one. I have suffered migraines for 17yrs and have tried all kinds of meds, herbs, chiropractor and even went as far as seeing and consegrity healer who helps clear your energy field (ancient healing). Most were all short term relief. Finally decided in Jan to give the "vitamin cocktail" a try, after discussing with a family member who is a Pharmacist. It took about 2-3wks before I noticed improvement. Now I only get about 2 migraines a month and they are very mild and last only a day or so. I use to get migraines almost every week and would last 3 days. Some months better than others. I would have my Imitrex refilled almost every month . Dec was the last refill(yippy). This has really improved my life. I hope this may be helpful to someone else. I am so happy I gave this one a try. I follow the regimen to a T. I wanted to give this a few months before I posted, so far this is a "winner" with me!!!
Curious if anyone else has tried this and what your outcome has been.

1. "Cocktail"
I am so glad that you have had relief! Congratulations for finally finding something that works for you!

I am also on the cocktail (6 mths) and also have had amazing results. I still have to watch my diet, sleeping patterns, go to chiropractor weekly, no alcohol, etc but I now lead a normal life with one or two migraines a MONTH, compared to four or five a WEEK that I had pre-cocktail.

I seems that it only works for some people, I guess we don't all have the same deficiencies in our body.

Thanks to DIZZYPUP!!!

You can find the list of vitamins in this thread. I have been taking most everything on the list too, since December when I quit taking fiorinal. I am having only about 5-6 migraines a month now verses having them every other day before. I am not sure it is the vitamin cocktail, or just getting rid of all the rebounds. I do feel much healthier in general though.

Thank you! I'm going to give it a try. Did you talk to your doctor about it first?
I'm hesitant to do that b/c I'm getting tired of calling her so often and the solution is always a new drug. I'm really getting sick of the pharmaceuticals. They work for a week or 2 and then it's back to 4 migraines a week.
Anyway, I have a call in to her about weaning off zoloft which is no longer working, so perhaps i'll run it by her.
My holistic pharmacist is also very knowledgeable about what is safe to take together, or not. Anyway, thank you for sharing this. And I'm really glad I found this list.

For guys, I would worry a little bit about the iron in the Walmart "OneSource" vitamin. Men are suppose to avoid iron supplements as it raises their heart attack risk.

It has 18 mg of iron, which exceeds the RDA for women. This much iron can also make a lot of people nauseous.

So you might want to look for a similar vitamin tablet without or with less iron. I beleive there is a "One Source Mens" that does this.

I didn't talk to my Dr. I feel Pharmacist seem to be more knowledgeable about drugs/vitamin interaction and stuff like that. I discussed with a family member who is a Pharmacist. I only take Imitrex so I wasn't worried about any interaction. The way I look at it ,it's all pretty much natural stuff and our body all ready makes it. It can't be any worse than all the other prescription meds I've taking over the years. I guess you just have to weigh it out. I did research all the vitamins on-line. Hope this helps.

Thank you, Vicki. It does help. When I looked closer at the list, I realized I'm taking a lot of those vitamins already, except for the extra B150 complex and the Omega 3,6,9s. I'm going to talk with my pharmacist tomorrow. I used to take fish oil and it might have been during a time when I wasn't getting a lot of migraines. But I think I had also just started taking daily zoloft so that could have been it. Anyway, I'm weaning off the zoloft since it isn't helping any more, so this would be a good time to start this new regimen. I'll keep you posted!

I plan on trying this vit. cocktail. I have been interested in going the vitamin route because I hate taking meds. that effect me.
I went to a vitamin store today to check things out and I got a warning about the Omegas (and Ginko too even though it is not listed in the cocktail). I checked out several stores and they all warned me that if you take any type of blood pressure meds or anything that effects your blood to check with your dr first. They said that they are blood thinners and can interfere with your meds. I take inderal so i would fall in that catagory.
Just wanted to give the heads up.
Wishing all painfree days Michelle

10. "Attn: Charmed Quark"
In response to Charmed Quarks concern about men and the amount of iron, OneSource has a multivitamin specifically for men also. There is no iron in the men's formula.

It does, however, contain ginseng, saw palmetto, lycopene, and EECG (green tea extract), and has three times the VitC and twice the VitE of Centrium. It's a multivitamin/multimineral/herb supplement to promote a healthy heart, healthy prostate, and increase metabolism and energy.

I've taken the women's formula for over a year, my husband takes the men's, and my teenage daughters take the teen formula.

I work with a woman who has diverticulitis and had been having a terrible time finding a good multivitamin that didn't cause her more abdominal pain and diarrhea. She started taking the OneSource at my suggestion and has had no digestive troubles from it, as well as having more energy and catching fewer of the nasty bugs we've worked around this winter.

I haven't taken the extra supplements DizzyPup recommended, but the OneSource has been a part of my daily regimen for quite awhile and is the best multivitamin I've ever taken. And honestly I stumbled upon it while shopping at WalMart...tried it initially because it was the cheapest brand they sold. - Donna

Michele, thanks for letting us know that. When you talk to you doctor can you let us know what he says? I take a beta-blocker for a minor heart problem so I will have to give my doctor a call tomorrow.

12. "RE: Attn: constntrdr"
Thanks, Laurie, for that link.

And Donna, thanks for the info about the men's version. 18mg is way too much iron for me being post-menopausal--it would have been perfect for me before, with my heavy periods and constant anemia. Now, too constipating, and just too much.

I have seen many dozens of drs over the years, and not one has ever asked me about what I eat. I did receive lectures from a nutritionist, but I had to go into an inhospital program to get that information; it was not offered before that.

No one has ever mentioned vitamins except one dr who said offhandedly, some say magnesium works, you could try that if you want. But she gave no amount and did not know how much I should take when I asked her.

The fact that at least 3 people here have been helped by this formula says a lot. Besides, drs in med school receive little or no training about vitamins and nutrition. At best an afternoon, usually an hour or two, often nothing at all.

It certainly seems worth a try.

I have always asked my drs how our meds work. Know what they say? We don't know.

They are constantly Rxing meds they have no idea what they do in our bodies--especially long term. They nearly always poo-poo side effects.

Vitamins and minerals are a lot less harmless than anything a doctor has EVER prescribed for you. We take things that make us stumble around in a fog, make our brains unable to process information, make us unable to sleep or unable to stay awake, leech calcium from our bones, have caused people to twitch uncontrollably--and sometimes it becomes permanent.

Yet we all take these little recipes of poison to our pharmacists to fill them and then we take them faithfully.

Where has it got those of us who come here year after year? Most of our drs have no answers. They just faithfully go down the list of meds they heard could help h/a.

There is really nothing to lose with these vitamins. Believe me, do you think a company like Wal-Mart would be selling these things without experts vetting the forumla? And then giving it their approval?

Some quack medicine man did not make up these formulas. Any dr who says they are no good would be disagreeing with experts in this field.

13. "RE: Attn: constntrdr"
I've had several doctors, including my neurologist, recommend B vitamins and magnesium for migraines.

There was a recent double blind study showing that B2 ( riboflavin) significantly reduced migraines in many migraneurs. 59% had at least a 50% reduction compared to 15% in the placebo group. Of course, I say find a good placebo They used 400 milligrams /day.See http://www.gettingwell.com/drug_info/nmdrugprofiles/nutsupdrugs/rib_0263.shtml
and read "Reseach Summary".

While riboflavin is well tolerated by most, don't assume that just because it's a vitamin it is necessarily safe in large quanitities ( D and A are dangerous if you take too much) or won't cause side effects. I was recently on niacin therapy for cholestrol control, and let me tell you, talk about side effects. It felt like my skin was on fire! Pretty funny, though, according to my wife who has her own hot flashes
