"WHAT DO I DO NOW????"
Ok....I've had a migraine for the past 13 days...believe me I've read the other posts and I know many of you have gone through worse but I think my dr. has given up on me.

I called last Friday after the fiorcet wasn't working and she called in a presciption for Vicoden ES, Now when I called she said there isn't anything stronger she can give me. The Vicoden is ok, but I have to take 2 at a time to make the pain go away and then once it wears off the pain is back full force.

I have tried Nortriptilyn, Imitrex, Esgic, Zomig, Maxalt, Pelpax, Axert, 1 toradol injection, Topamax, & Vicoden, and Percocet....NOW WHAT?????

Also my migraine has been going in a 2-3 day cycle day 1 it's a 5-6 day 2 a 7 and day 3 it's up to an 8-9 then the cycle starts again but now I'm seeing black spots which is new for me and I am really nauseus.

I am so sorry for whining I just need a plan because I can't take it anymore and honestly when the pain gets up to an 8 or 9 I am considering throwing myself off the roof ( I would never actually do that but sometimes I feel like that may be the only thing to stop the pain)

Thanks!!!
Shannon

Hi Shannon,

Sorry to hear you are having so many migraines.
Have you gone to ER to see if they can break the cycle for you? You might want to consider that if you haven't already.

What strenth fiorinal are you taking? I used to take C 1/4 but used to have to take two or three before it would help (but not all at once). I also found taking them and going to bed would work better than sitting up, I guess I was more relaxed.

Sorry I can't offer you any advice.

Hope you find some relief soon.

Shannon--DHE injections can be used to break a cycle like that. Also, steroids are sometimes used for that purpose. When I used to get like that, I would fill a small trash bag with crushed ice and lay down with my head buried in it. After about an hour my head would be numb enough that the pain was bearable.

That was always my alternative to suicide when I started having those self-destructive thoughts. You know, the negative voice whispering in one ear would say " You can't spend your whole life lying on an ice pack in your bed." But the the hopeful voice would whisper into the other ear that I could, in fact, lay there a half a day if I needed to, and by then maybe I would have decided that life was still worth living.

Once I got the pain dulled down a little, I could think more clearly. Unfortunately, if I got up off the ice, the pain came back immediately, but it was a period of respite that kept me from going nuts during the years that my migraine pain was at it's worst.

Shannon,

I feel your pain. I would go to the ER if at all possible and ask for an abortive not only pain relief. When I get large doeses of pain meds in the ER they work great for about 24-48hrs (usually) then the pain comes back with a vengence (rebound) that's why abortives are a necessity for me.

There are stronger things you can take at home, chances are your doctor isn't willing to prescribe them for you. Stodol is a good one, it's stronger than morphine and comes in a nasal spray that is fast acting. It specifically treats migraine pain but is addictive.

Good LUck to you

Hi Shannon.

I know what you're going through! I've had attacks last 26 days.

My best advice is to go the ER. They can give you meds by IV to break the attack and rehydrate you. They may give you DHE, Reglan, Decadron, morphine, Dilaudid, Valium, etc...

I was in Emerg myself between Fri/Sat, and Mon/Tues. Since they asked me what I should be given, I told them:

1mg DHE IV
10mg Reglan IV
5mg Valium IV
2mg Dilaudid

They added on Zofran IV (4mg) to control the nausea.

The only agent that brought me relief was Valium. Dilaudid didn't help at all this time.

Try and hang in there and go to the ER!!!

I think you need to find a pain specialist.....I am assuming that your doctor is just a GP?

Are you caffiene free? Just asking cause it can cause hell to us migraineurs.

I think you may be in for a shot of anti-inflammatory...hardcore stuff.

Have you been to a neurologist for an MRI? If this cycle is out of the norm then I really advise it.

I hope you find help. Drink lots of water....stretch your neck...and try to imagine what life is like with no pain. See if you can remember..I find that this helps me sometimes. I can concentrate on that feeling.

My doctor put me on decadron for 4 days. It is a steroid, but it helped.

I don't know if this will help, but I had a migraine for 7 weeks, and the only thing that finally broke it form me was the decadron. I actually had to take it 8 days for this last attack, but usually 4 days will get rid of it.

I know how you feel and so does everyone else here. Hope your headache goes away soon.

Shannon,
I'm so sorry to hear about your on going migraine. I can certainly relate to what you are going through. I had a migraine that lasted 6 days a few months ago that didn't repsond to anything either..... maxalt, my preventive meds, ice packs, you name it, I tried it. I called my neurologist and he prescribed me a steroid pack that broke the cycle, then he increased the dosage of my preventive med ( Topamax). The steroid helped by the end of the first day. I did have some side effects from it but breaking that cycle was worth it! I hope you feel better soon! I'll say a prayer for you!

Shannon,

I am sorry to hear that you too are suffering for long-term migraines. I too have gone for a long painful ride at times. Sometimes a whole month. It stinks! My last two-week haul migraine was broke with an adjustment to my neck by my Chiropractor. I had been seeing this man for physical therapy only. It was for muscle spasms I have in my neck that could or could not be related to my migraines. (no one knows) He usually performs pressure point massage, which will make my migraines much less intense. One day that I happened not to be vomiting (comes frequently with my migraines) I asked him if he dared try a spinal manipulation. I was at the END of my rope. Really, I was ready to end it. Just couldn’t take the pain anymore. The pain drugs I was on were helping but mostly I just lived under my pillow in a dark room. UGG! So, he was very open to try something, anything, to help me. IT was a big risk for me because this had backfired once before. It had made my migraines VERY worse. This time though it had gone to that 10 pain level and had stayed that way for a week or so. I couldn’t take that anymore. NOTHING could be worse.

he gave it a go and within about 10 minutes my migraine was GONE! IT was great! Now I still have migraines, yes. However, they don't reach such high levels of pain as they used to because I visit him for a manipulation once a week. One time I skipped a week to see if that was what was really working. Well, big mistake! I had a massive migraine to prove it. Big time pain. So, try very hard to go every week now.

I am on many drugs too though to control my situation so it isn't just chiropractics. Zanaflex for my muscle spasms and for the migraines: Topomax (100mg), Ultram for pain, Lodine for swelling, Norco when it gets really bad (good stuff by the way) and one you might try RELPAX. The RELPAX is the migraine med. It works pretty well for me. As long as my migraine hasn't reached the vomiting point yet it will pretty much wipe it out. It is mega expensive but I have to say it is well worth it.

Thought I would mention all I could that is helping me out. I am not pain free by any means. I have at least a 3-4 pain every day and when I have a migraine more than that but just thought maybe any info I could give might give you some thing to ask your doc.

I would try a steroid...either decadron or prednisone oral. Or depomedrol injection.

My last suggestion would be to go to the ER and get enough of something to make you sleep at least a day...sometimes that is what it takes to knock out a biggie...

Hope you feel better soon!

I know for me the only thing that breaks a migraine that goes past a few days is a shot of Demerol and vistaril.

It seems like I have to get something into my system very fast that is strong enough.

If I don't get at least 100 mg of the Demerol it won't work.

That is my only suggestion.

Love,

Cindy
