"Topamax Symptoms"
Hi You Guys! I started taking 100 mg of Topamax three wks ago for my chronic migraines, and I was wondering if any of you have the same side effects that I do with this drug? Such as: Terrible nightmares, dry mouth, and shortness of breath? So far, (knock wood) no migraines, so I'm willing to live with the side effects. I'd appreciate any info....thank you!!!!

Jami

Hi there--

Yeah I had lots of side effects on Topamax and the worst one was a chronic, dry cough. I am an opera singer and this is totally unacceptable. I am also really mad that my neuro did not tell me that dry mouth was a side effect. I have that too.

It severely affected my ability to concentrate and my memory, caused insomnia and some tingling in my fingers, and some sexual dysfunction. I also lost about 10 lbs. which I am happy about. And during this time, I was able to withdraw from my daily use of fiorinol which I am thrilled about.

I have now weaned down to 25 mg. of topamax and am feeling much better, but not all of the side effects are gone yet. Have to sing on Saturday and am praying that I will be fine by then.

And with all of that, my migs were only lessened in severity, not in occurrence.

Good luck with it--sounds like it's working for you. That's a good thing.

Hallie

I was on Topamas for about a month and a half. I had to get off of it because of the side effects.
I had severe depression, numbness and tingling in my hands and feet and swolen gums. The migraines didn't really get better either. Since I have been off Topamax all the symptoms have disappeared. So far I haven't been back to the neuro. to see about another preventative. My next appointment isn't till January 11. I will never take Topamax again. It has made me leary about other preventatives.

Hi Gincal,

Do you recall how long it took for all of your symptoms to disappear after you stopped the topamax? I have just been off of it for 4 days now, but still have the dry mouth and cough, though the cough has lessened some what.

Thanks, Hallie

Hallie,
I think it took about a week.... it wasn't very long. I sure feel better since I am off of it.
Good luck to you.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-01 AT 01:35 AM (CMT)

What was your cough like? I was put on Topamax recently, and it has drastically helped my migraines, to the point where I'm now getting my GED and trying to get a job (I'm 17, had to drop school b/c of migraines). However, I am coughing. I've recently had a bad cold, and coughed with it and my asthma's been acting up. I hope that it's one of those two things and not the Topamax, but you never know, so if you could describe your cough for me?

It feels/seems like an asthma cough but. . .
And my asthma meds do help.

I'm going to see a general practioner later this week, a maybe he'll be able to help me figure out this cough also.

Thank you,
Tressa

7. "The Topamax Cough"
Hi Tressa,

My cough eventually became chronic, continuous and dry. It also seemed "asthmatic". I went to my internist and he thought perhaps it was some form of asthma (which I have never had), but after checking my lungs (which were fine), he rejected that notion. After checking the extensive list of symptoms in the PDR, he found chronic cough listed at the very bottom of the list. As soon as I began tapering down my dosage, the cough started to lessen. But it was only after I stopped it completely, that it went away. Topamax for me was *very* drying to my voice, and bronchials....I wonder if this could be good for people with asthma??

Oh, and by the way, topamax never helped with my migraines. Glad it's helping yours, but watch out for that cough---it was a killer.
