"WINTER STORMS BRINGING CRAZY BAROMETRIC PRESSURE "
I don't know about the rest of the world, but they're predicting more snow stuff here in central Virginia. I've been taking Imitrex every day since Christmas day, and it recedes, but it comes back again.I thought I was rebounding, but the HA's are actually responding to the Imitrex. It's just that the barometric pressure keeps rising and falling! Anyhow, hope all the folks that are fellow "weather heads" make it through the storms OK! (Pity the poor migrainuers in the southern U.S.!)

Hi Dixie-
I'm new to this board, but I was reading it and your message caught my eye. I get migraines from low pressure systems, and I was wondering if you had any information that could help me. I"ve been getting these for about six-seven years, and they happen whenever the barometric pressure falls under 30.00. If you could give me any advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Lucky Me....I live in NE Florida where this is the first year in about five, that we have had to wear coats and winter clothes during Christmas. The when the barometric pressure starts to drop....out pops the headaches! But lucky us...we get the hurricane headaches too! AND we get hurricanes in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. That's really alot of fun then! Life is grand being a migraneur. If it's not chocolate or bright lights its gotta be the weather that we can't control.

Fondly!

Lynda

KaseeZubella,Shelly & Lynda,
Yes,isn't it a relief to know "you're not alone!" When I first started seeking treatment for migraines about 14 yrs ago, I used to tell doctors that I knew there was going to be a weather change long before I heard about it on the news because I would get a migraine. They would all go "Huh! Isn't that interesting..." Now in migraine literature they actually list barometric pressure changes as triggers for many people,so I guess we're making progress, however slow.
As far as treatment goes, my doctors have had me try many preventives as well as abortives. I don't think they treat "weather" migs any differently than other migs. I read an interesting article in Farmers' Almanac about a big hurricane that hit Galveston, Texas around the turn of the century.(One of the biggest natural disasters in U.S. history) What grabbed my attention was that there was a meteorologist who lived on the island who survived the hurricane. He later went to medical school to become a doctor and specialized in THE EFFECTS OF WEATHER ON THE HUMAN BODY! I'd like to know if any other doctor specializes in that! It makes sense to me-so many factors in our enviorment affect our health. If I can find any more info I will post. In the meantime, let's hope & pray for stable weather patterns! Cheers-Julie

I finally feel like I'm NOT THE ONLY ONE!!!! The barometer, the rain, that time of the month,stress,back/neck problems...Icould go on. I thought I was the only one that felt the air pressure change. I will feel it in my sinuses sometimes-across my face, into my jaw and my teeth hurt! I have been using Maxalt 10mg,but lately it's not working as well. I also read that if you get 4 or more migranes a month you shouldn't take the Maxalt so often. So now I am concerned that this stuff is not so great. I have had MRI's,they don't find anything. It does run in the family. My mom, grandmother and sister get them. But I get them constantly and just can't take it anymore. I am trying to find some input from people who UNDERSTAND what I feel. Doctors just don't know enough. If they never had a migraine, they don't know what people feel. I have worked in a hospital for 11 years(I'm only 30),and there still isn't any answers. So I guess I have resorted to asking you to give me some info. I will give you info -whatever I can. I appreciate it and UNDERSTAND what everyone feels. Thanks- Please e-mail me soon if possible. chelleb128@hotmail.com

Chelleb128,
I am glad to find out that I share symptoms with someone else. It seems like the other individuals who have contributed to this page share similar experiences with us. My sinuses sometimes hurt, but I had a sinus x-ray and I got a clean bill of health. I can feel the weather change for a couple of days before the weatherpeople say it is going to, and my friends are always amazed that I predict it so accurately. Not such a great trick to me, though. I am on Maxalt 10mg, and I find that that usually helps. Sometimes it only lasts for a couple of hours, and then I have to take another one. I am still in college, so I have to do what I have to do when it's time for class/tests/etc. Migraines are pretty common in my family, but everyone's triggers are different. I hope you find out info soon. I am looking and I'll tell you as soon as I find something. Good luck. Kasee

I live in Minnesota. Talk about crazy weather. My friends start packing their survival gear when I start migraining because I've been 98% accurate on the storms occurring within a day or two of me experiencing one. Glad to know I not the only one who thinks weather plays a good part in them. Hope you are all pain free today. I'm not.

I've been really bad this year with weather migraines too. I'm in south central Texas and everytime the jet stream makes it this far south I'm in for a tough season. It hasn't been this bad since El Nino a few years ago. Like you guys, my friends and my boss check with me regarding upcoming weather. I've been about 98% acurate. My husband keeps telling me that I need to hire myself out to the weather forcasters as an indicater. I'm more acurate than they are!!

Unfortunately, Imitrex, Maxalt and Zomig have no effect on these types of migraines whatsoever for me. I take a lot of Excedrin and sometimes Lortab (hydrocodone) but event they don't help much so I just spend rainy days on the couch quietly puttering around the house. I have been missing a day or two of work every week and have been very lucky that my boss has been extremely patient and understanding about it. This is the first time I've actually worked for someone who believes that I am home in pain and not just taking a day off because I don't feel like coming in. Anybody else would have fired me by now. He's even gotten to where he'll have a good idea which days I'll be calling in by the weather report.

Anyway, let's all hope that these crazy weather patterns start leveling out soon. Good luck to all.

Michelle

Diana,

I had a hystorectomy two years ago (for reasons not related to my migraines). I recommend after having surgery that when you discuss hormones with your doctor (if you do use them) to ask about the Climara patch. My doctor put me on the patch because he said daily hormone pills might cause migraines as your homones will fluctuate between pills. The patch gives a nice slow steady dose. I'm only in my 30's so I really need the hormones and I don't know if there might be fewer headaches without them. However, if you want hormones, the patch is a wonderful option. You are welcome to email me if you like. micagain@ev1.net

Lots of Luck,
Michelle

Human Barometers,
What a sensitivity to have! Once about 5 yrs ago I lost all headaches for 6 mos. No rhyme or reason.
It took me 15 yrs to figure out that the weather is a major cause of most headaches for me. When my Dr said it might be the weather I didn't know how to relate this info because I often have a headache when the weather is good. Now I know that any sudden change or when the pressure keeps fluctuating within a certain range
that this is causing the pain.
Since menopause most of my other triggers no longer affect me though I maintain my 'migraine diet'; ie) no wine, corn, yeast extract etc.
The North West coast is fraught with weather! I]
reach for coffee 1st and ibuprofen helps some.
A neurologist I conversed with on-line said that they don't know the exact cause of weather headaches though they think it might have something to do with the venous sinuses (not the nasal type sinus).
The migraine meds like imitex just don't do a thing for it!!!!!!!!!!!ARRRRRGGHHHHHHH They work so great on the body chemistry type headache!
Oh well, back to more suffering. the weather is changing again!!!!!!! HA HA HA.........it must be a week end.(no i don't only get them on week ends)
Good practice for patience, endurance and developing compassion for the suffering of others.
Hang in, Hang on, the weather always changes again.
Love to All DANA
