"topamax and hair loss"
I realize this topic has already been discussed but I want reiterate others concerns regarding the side effect hair loss when taking topamax. I'm still so anxious--I keep waking up at night checking my hair. I've been on this drug for two months. About one month after beginning the medication I thought I noticed that I was losing more hair than usual but I questioned myself. Then this last week I couldn't deny it any longer. When I found this website I felt so relieved to know others had similar experiences and I was not imagining this! I've starting tapering off the topamax. Thanks for having this discussion because without it I don't know that I would have found the validation I needed that indeed this hair loss is quite likely linked to the topamax. Gosh I can hardly wait til my hair thickens again-its already a stressful time in my life so to have this happen now just tips the scale even further!

best,
Laura

I had hair loss taking this drug but was willing to give it a try 3 times. This last time I could only tolerate the side effects for 2 months. My hair loss did not happen this time and I was going to take a break before the loss started again. My scalp and skin are very sensative. I saw a dermotologist and she said the only way to avoid hair loss was to stop this drug. Maybe the company will find a solution for the side effects and improve this drug. Take care.

Dear Laura,
I had such slow and insidious hair loss with topamax that it took me quite a while to realize it was happening.

My dr had told me it did NOT cause hair loss, because I had a horrid experience with depacote, after about 3 weeks, I ran my fingers through my hair and a huge clump came out.

I went to a pharmacist and asked about the T, and he said it did cause hair loss, and when I phoned my dr, she admitted it did, but did not tell me because I might actually "cause" hair loss by believing it could happen. (The ultimate in maternalistic behavior by a dr).

She also told me that the hair loss would continue for 3 months after I tapered off the T. But she was wrong, it went on for 8 more months, and it took 12 months before my hair began actually growing thicker.

I hope you will not take as long as I did, and you probably won't, because I am prone to this particular side effect.

Not great news about the hair loss continuing after you stop the med, but at least now you KNOW.
Good luck,
Mishkyn

I had no hair loss while taking topomax - but upon ceasing the drug due to the fact I had turned into a stupid, forgetful zombie - my hair started falling out.

I see a long hair specialist and he stated it was not falling out but breaking - a lot! He suggested mega conditioning, no brushing or even combing when wet. only gentle finger styling & giving my hair a break from styling as often as possible.

I use a product by Redken called "No Snap" (I think that is the name) it is a leave in conditioner. You might also try Garnier Fructis Long & Strong - it is a fortifier - seems to help. Kerastasse makes some very good products as well. One of the posters here had doctor that suggested the Nioxin products. So I use at least a million different hair products monthly to try and get it back in shape.

I also did not color it for a few months - well I did use the Miss Clairol Loving Care - not permanent, washes out in about 6 shampoos a few absolutely neccesary times.

Ps - I wanted to add that silicone products like Biosilk, or other shine products do make my hair break and fall out.
