"Amerge? Nexoprin? Anything??!!!"
Hello,

This is my first time visiting this site. For the past 3 days I have had what I believe is a migraine. I've never had a migraine or any other headache that has lasted this long or been so severe.

My doctor gave me a sample of Amerge a while ago. I am tempted to take it, but I'm worried about side effects etc.
- is it too late to take it?
- has anyone else taken it? and were there side effects?
- if this is not really a migraine, is it dangerous to take it?

I just stumbled upon some info on Nexoprin. Has anyone tried it?

For the first time in the past 3 days, the pain is somewhat manageable, but I feel just awful. I'm so tired and depressed and feeling very hopeless. My stomach is also starting to feel upset. Is this normal?

Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Linda

Welcome to the forum. I wish I knew about your meds, but I don't. I do know that the people on this forum are really supportive and helpful, so I'm sure you'll get more responses. I just wanted to welcome you to the board.

What meds or otc meds have you taken for your migraine so far? Have you seen your doc, yet about this episode? And, why were you prescribed the Amerge? Was it for this migraine specifically or have you had migraines before and it was prescribed for that? Sorry for all the questions.

Jessi

Hi Linda,
I take Amerge a couple of times a week for my migraines. I have been taking it for more than 5 years with no side effects that I know of.

It is slower to work I think than some of the other triptans but it eventually works (takes about 2-4 hours) and it takes the migraine completely away.

If I don't take it early in the migraine it still usually works sooner or later, but sometimes not for many hours. (6 hours or so!)

My stomach is always upset and anxious too when I have a migraine.

Hope this helps a little. Sorry you are suffering so.

Laurie

Thanks, Laurie. So, you don't feel weird when you take Amerge? A friend of mine took it once and he is afraid to take it again. He said he felt really spacey and his heart rate increased a lot.

One more question - you said the amerge takes your migraine away completely. Does this mean the migraine does not after the drug wears off? Is it gone for good?

Thanks for quick reply. I have had severe headaches before, which may or may not have been migraines. They usually only lasted a day. I was referred to a neurologist who suspected that they were migraines and gave me samples of three medications: Imitrex, Zomig, and Amerge. This was a couple of years ago. I tried the Zomig once, last summer, and it knocked me out. I had a hard time waking up. It kinda freaked me out. I'm always really nervous about taking any medications - I prefer natural remedies whenever possible - so I've just stuck to Advil since then. But this time it's so much worse and I am tempted to take the Amerge (the dr. told me that I should try this one because it has the fewest side effects).

The nexoprin is just something I found online. It looks like a herbal thing. It also looks like it might be completely bogus! Who knows...

No, I haven't seen my doctor since this episode started.

I'm just so upset and stressed out. I am a teacher and school just started on Tuesday, so I've basically been in agony ever since I met my new students. I finally had to leave work and come home today at lunchtime because I just couldn't do it anymore. I know it's only been 3 days and some people here have trouble for much longer than that, so I shouldn't complain.

Thanks again for your response. I feel better already.

Linda

I think you should complain. It's good to complain when you're in pain and get those emotions out of you, you know what I mean? There's nothing wrong with that. 3 days is an eternity, especially when you're not used to it. And, I feel that enduring pain for any amount of time is an ordeal, so don't apologize for complaining. Anyone on this board totally understands and we've all had to do that at one point or another--or more than one!

It's good to take the triptans as soon as you think your headache is turning into a migraine. Or, I don't know if you get auras or not, but if you do, then you want to take the triptan as soon as you get the aura.

Nausea goes along with migraines, usually. It sucks. There are meds to help with that, too, like phenergan. Otherwise, you might want to try alkaseltzer, club soda, saltines. If you've ever had morning sickness, you know the tricks. I'm not saying that they'll work with migraines, but it might be worth the try. If you're throwing up, I'd stay away from the saltines. Oy!

Icing your head and popsicles can help you feel better too. If you don't get migs very often, you might want to drink a soda, cup of coffee or tea, or take an excedrin migraine, because they have caffeine in them.

I'm just throwing out some ideas to help, but don't be scared to take the medicine your doctor prescribed for your pain. When I take a new med that I've never tried before, I do it on the weekend or when my husband is going to be home. It just makes me feel more comfortable about it.

I really hope you'll feel better soon. I know you're having such a hard time right now. Take a long hot bubble bath, then ice the noggin. Take it easy and be good to your body this weekend.

Big Hugs!

Jessi

Linda,
I don't feel spacy when I take amerge and my heart seems to be fine. (I have palpitations normally) Everyone is different though.

Sometimes I feel a little bit weak after taking it, but many times, especially if I catch it early enough, I can just keep right on doing what I've been doing...work, etc. If I don't catch it early I have to lay down or at least lay around til it works, or it seems to take even longer.

I think that it is one of the more mild triptans out there.

I guess what I meant when I said that it takes the migraine away is that after a few hours I am usually good, no grogginess, no lingering mild pain, just feeling normal. I am not sure if when I get one again it is because the amerge wore off, or just because I am a migrainer. I usually get 2 or 3 a week.

Like other triptans, Amerge is most effective if it is taken within the first two hours of the migraine. It's best to take it as soon as symptoms appear, if possible. If I take a triptan out of this window, it does nothing for me.

All the triptans are different, with different efficacies and side effects. How it will affect you depends on your body. In fact, an article was published today about a study of how people respond to one triptan (in this case, Axert), but not another (in this case, Imitrex). You can read a summary of the article at http://www.thedailyheadache.com/2005/09/not_all_triptan.html, which also has links to the Reuters story and the journal article abstract.

This is probably waaaayyyy more info than you needed!

Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.
