"Cafergot - Help! (or Verapamil)"
I posted earlier- hasn't anyone ever used Cafergot? Did you have any unpleasant side-effects?

Re: Verapamil- have any of you tried this? This will be the next thing my Dr. give me... I hate taking all this weird stuff...

I took Cafergot years and years ago. If I caught the headache really early, sometimes it would work. It made me feel a little funny in my head and a little jumpy like too much caffeine. Actually, I even took it when I was pregnant (my son is 28). I did not seem to have any serious side effects and my son was born fine! I used Wigraine for several years recently until Imitrex and Zomig came on the market. Wigraine seemed to work about the same as the Cafergot. It also is caffeine and ergotamine like Cafergot. I get much better relief with Zomig.
I have never used Verapamil.
Hope this helps!

Yes, I've tried it. But that was 20 years ago. I didn't know it was still in circulation! I used to tkake one or two a day without side effects. But then, after a few years, it was less effective; and I switched to Bellergal, and so on and on....

I just got off of Verapamil after trying it for three months. I had a Migraine almost everyday when I used it, so I figured it wasn't working for me. I also did not like the side effects as well: dizziness, light-headed when trying to exercise, and constipation. For me, it didn't work.

I used Cafergot for over 20 years. I had good quality of life with it until 2 years ago. I suddenly developed angina and tachycardia when I used it.I started using it when I was 20 and suddenly at age 40 it started affecting my heart. The heart problems took about a year to resolve, and I had to have a Thalium stress test before anyone would let me try Zomig. I tried Imitrex and had shortness of breath. It was relieved with Benadryl, thus considered an allergic reaction. I do OK with Zomig but can't take enough to abort a headache with out having some tachycardia.
I have tried Verapamil 2 times with no relief, my headaches actually get worse.
You just have to keep looking and trying things....I guess, I still am looking for some magic.

I Have tried Verapamil and beta blockers neither of them worked. I think that migraines have a mind of their own. They strike when they want to no matter what meds we take. When I took the preventative meds I didn't have them quite as often, but they were worse when I had them. So I went with more often and not as bad.
Have a pain free day

Hi Connie,

I have never tried cafergot, but have been on verapamil daily as a preventative for several years.

I had no side effects with verapamil, which is amazing for me. It reduced my migraines by half.

Hope this helps.

Catherine

Yes I have , and still do use Cafergot...It is the only abortive medication that works for me...Imatrex, Amerge ,Maxalt, all do nothing for me...As for verapimal...I just recently stopped using it...It seem to stop helping me...And I have now switched to a different Calcium channel blocker, I now use Norvasc and it combined with Neurontin seem to be helping

Hi. I am brand new to this site, and have never posted anything before, but I wanted to tell you -yes I am currently on Verapamil (Verelan PM - 300 mg) I take one tab every night. I have had migraines since I was a teen (with aura), and very few drugs seem to have much affect.
Which brings us back to this Verapamil! It is not as weird and harsh as you are thinking though - it is a calcium channel blocker. Your pharmacist should be able to give you plenty of information about it. It has not caused me any untolerable side effects except that I cannot jump up off the floor without a tad bit of dizziness......a small price to pay (if it'd worked!)
Cafergot will cause far more obvious side effects in a greater majority of people than will Verapamil, as it is an ergotamine derivative.
Now, many folks have had success with these drugs and I will not knock either one of them. However, for me, this treatmant has proved unsuccessful.
The most important thing to remember is that you have the right to ask your physician and even your pharmacist any and all questions that you wish to have answered BEFORE treatment starts. Communication is so very important.
I hope this treatment is effective for you.....i know what it is like to suffer......

I used cafergot first, 10 years ago. It did'nt work and made my nausea worse. I have not used verapamil but have recently started on Inderal. I also have been using Zomig now for a year with good success when the migraine hits. I would like to find a cure though. Good luck, I pray we all find a cure.

Yes and I still take Cafergot suppository form- don't laugh gets right in your system and you can't throw it up, no matter how sick you are.
At one time many years ago I took them every day all the time. NO ONE even neuro told me not to take too many. Had to go to hosp to get off.
Now it take onehalf of supp and its strong enough to stop hache but stillfeel sick, only we migrainers can understand what we go thru for relief from the evil MIGRAINE, can they.
Lately though I notice my bpressure really is up after taking for a few days, but still best drug for me! Bless you!
