"My first aura?"
I have a question for those of you with aura or know about auras.

I've never had one therefore I don't know much about them, but I think I may have experienced my first one last night.

Actually, I think it started the night before (is that even possible?). I got REALLY dizzy for about half an hour. I was on the computer and I was so dizzy that I couldn't even read the computer screen. It lasted for about half an hour and it was suddenly gone.

Then last night I started to see wavy lines around the perimeter of everything that I looked at. This was really bizzare. This effect lasted for about an hour then went away for several hours. Then it came back again. It lasted again for about half an hour.

Does this sound like an aura at all? Or maybe a side effect from medication? Something I'll definitely talk to my neuro about, but I wanted to see what you all thought, too....

Hey Erin,
The dizziness you described sounds like aura to me, but I've never had the wavy lines last longer than fifteen minutes. While I have heard of prolonged and aura and have experience via the dizziness and other symptoms, the visual aura has never last that long.

Do you have high blood pressure?

Since you've never experienced it before, you might want to call your neurologist.

Please keep me posted,
Shelly

Let me make a slight correction... now that I'm thinking about it, the wavy lines weren't continuous for an hour. It was off and on for an hour, about ten minutes each. Does that make sense? I wasn't "fully concious" during the "aura"/headache phase last night... thinking back, i don't remember much of what happened last night. I usually don't when I get migraines. Kinda scary.

I guess the real question is did the attack phase of a migraine episode follow the dizziness or the wavy lines? Aura's are preludes to the attack phase most of the time. Did a headache or other form of attack follow your dizziness or the wavy lines?

I had a slight headache just before the wavy lines but my headache got much, much worse after the wavy lines. I ended up taking my Maxalt about half an hour after the wavy lines.

But I got the same wavy lines thing a few hours later. Is it possible to get an aura DURING a migraine attack?

Hi Erin,

I've had some weird migraine experinces where my normal/typical migraines don't include aura, dizzyness, complete loss of sight etc. Its pretty weird and scarry when you do get a change in migraines though.

I would def mention to your dr., don't rule out other possibilites like blood pressure, etc.

For me looking back at my almost 30yrs of migraines I've had a few BAM migraines, mostly in my teens, complete and instant loss of sight and dizzyness/vertigo, and no head pain associated with it... but what a trip, lasted off and on for what seemed like forever, probably an hr or so, never want one of those babies again!

Then I've had about a half dozen+ aura ones, hate those, lose about 3/4 sight in one eye to all the sparkles and stuff, then a majorly huge migraine hits hard in about 20-25 min.

I did check with my dr when I started getting aura ones due to the change in my migraines... I think its a good idea for you to check as well. Any change could mean something or nothing... for me it was nothing.

I had my first aura this past year. While driving! It scared the daylights out of me because I thought I might be having a stroke. It started out with a grouping of little sparkly lights that turned into flashing zig zags that just spiraled slowly out of my field of vision.

This lasted for 20 - 30 minutes. I could see though the lights to whole time. It was annoying, not blinding. I had no migraine afterwards - I was just really tired. I've had one since. Again, no headache. Just tired.

I also had my first and only aura about a year and 1/2 ago. Right around the time my migraines started to get bad (when I went off the birth control pill).

I woke up with a small migraine and went to work and as soon as I started to work, I couldn't really see my computer screen. It was all white spots. I put my head down on my desk to rest my eyes for a bit and it didn't go away. I could barely see except for white spots/sparkly lights.

I called my husband to pick me up from work because I knew I couldn't drive. I had a coworker even walk me to the outside of the building to wait for him.

When I got home, I laid down and after a while the aura went away and my migraine got much worse.

That was the only time that has happen to me and I hope it never happens again. It was very scary.

I feel sorry for the people that get an aura before every migriane.

I've had millions of migraines (or so it seems), but only twice had an aura. It was so astounding that I still remember it in detail. One of the times about 10 years ago, I was driving my kids home from preschool. I thought initially that sun was in my eyes and gave me a blind spot, sort of like when a flash camera takes your picture. I remember looking at a stop sign, knowing it was a stop sign, seeing the shape and color of it, but not being able to read the words. I also had the squiggly lines.

Pretty scary, and stupid of me, to be driving my kids home when I was like that!

Haven't had an aura now in over 10 years.

It's a RARE occasion when I DON'T have an aura! What you described most definitely sounds like aura to me. My auras last anywhere from minutes to 1.5 hrs! I can usually tell the intensity of the migraine based on the what type of aura I get too.

Hi Kim,
I'm curious, did you eat anything before this happened?

I have the exact same experience (nearly blind) but only if I eat at Subway. It has happened exactly the same way twice. Once when I was pregnant, so I thought it was a cooincidence. I tried it again when my daughter was about and the exact same thing happened.

I can eat other subs with lunchmeat and don't have a problem.

This is why I'm curious if you ate anything within an hour of this happening.

Hi Shelly,

No I didn't eat anything before that happened. I just drank a cup of coffee (I use to drink coffee every morning but I have been coffee-free since March). I usually don't eat breakfast until 9:00-10:00 and this happen around 8:00ish.

I stay away from Subway because I believe those meats are filled with nitrates/msg. Wow I can't believe it triggered an aura for you both times. That would be enough for me to stay away from it forever.

Take Care,
Kim

Welcome to Aura World!

It can last for days with or without pain.

I'm one of those ghastly people who actually like the aura because it gives me a clarity of thought and presence that is almost like an altered state. It's just a shame about the skull-splitting pain.

Okay, over the last few days, I have had this same experience a few times and I have noticed a pattern. It seems to happen most often when it's dark. So I'm thinking it might be a s/e of medication or something else. I'll give my neuro a call later today...

Don't know what meds you take, but I used to have the same thing when I took topamax, and it always happened at night. It was a problem for me because I was working nights then.

I had a constant, vague dizziness, and things had kind of a shimmery look to them--like old TV's used to get when the signal wasn't coming in well.

Yes, I'm on Topamax and that's similar to what I'm experiencing. Kinda like the image is "dragging" or like there's a strobe light on... but less intense. Often, it's just out of the corner of my eye, but there's sometimes when it's my entire field of vision. It's really scary when I'm driving.

Did your doctor say it was anything to be concerned about?

Erin, it sounds like a side effect because when I was on Topomax I felt the same exact way Norma explained.

"had a constant, vague dizziness, and things had kind of a shimmery look to them".

My vision was also a little foggy.

Hopefully it is from Topamax, it will go away soon for you.
