I just recently got off fiorcet for rebound because I got to the point the relief was only for 40 min or an hr then whammo the pain was
worsened by the fiorcet! I would suggest you ask
your Dr. for a replacement - does he know and CARE about how many you take in a day or a week?
I know the feeling, they say take it immediately
before a migraine develops BUT don't take it too
often??????? Impossible.
God Bless you, we are all thinking of you.

Hi everyone thats what I was talking about the other day on the post. I am frustrated its hard to know what to do, your supposed to take the meds and the beginning of the migraine but if you get more migraines than you have meds for you have to choose which ones are the worst and treat them. I think most of us have more migraines than we medicate so there is no answer. If you take the meds right away at the beginning of the pain we would all be have rebound headaches from the meds it a visious circle, anyone no what to do? Bye Roxy.

I have recently started taking Zomig (since Dec.) and my doctor said to take it the minute I feel a headache comimg on. He said not to worry if I'm not totally sure if it is a migraine and that the important thing is to take it ASAP! I feel like I am using more than I should too! It helps...but I don't want to get in a rebound cycle. How many zomig are you using per week?? How many days in a row?? Let me know! Thanks, Moby

It was suppose to say zomig OR maxalt.Zomig is the only thing that really works, but when I run out or it isn't as bad I take maxalt.I have to get them both due to the limitations the insrance puts on them.

Hmn...it's my understanding that you only get withdrawal from analgesics and from narcotics--fiorocet, fiorinol, etc. The triptans (Zomig, Imitrex, Amerge) supposedly don't build up in your system. Still, you aren't supposed to take more than the weekly dose. Not that I follow those rules. (The pain rules, if you know what I mean!)

Hi all. I posted at great length a few days ago about my experience with rebound from imitrex. Won't tell it all again, but yes it happens. It is not addictive in the same sense as a narcotic, but it is a vasoconstictor, and you will get rebound vasodilation if you use it often..In someone with migaines, vasodilation will trigger another migraine, so you get in a vicious cycle. If there is an answer I don't know what it is.

1 prescription of Imitrex is only 9 pills and costs me $30 and I have pretty decent insurance. I hate having to think about how bad my mig is or project how bad I think it will be before I take a pill.

7. "RE: Zomig rebound"
I not only had rebound headaches with Imitrex, but I found that I had more frequent and more severe headaches with it. I do not use it any more. From all that I have read about these medications they should not be used more than twice a week and even that can cause problems. Everyone reacts differently to medications but it is my understanding that the triptans are NOT a daily or several times a day medication. If you are using it this way you need to talk to your doctor ASAP - you probably need a preventative instead. Hope this helps - you can probably read in the archives some of my other posts regarding the use of triptans - they are wonderful but only if used infrequently.

8. "RE: Zomig rebound"
You CAN rebound on Zomig and the triptan type drugs! I did it and boy was it tough to quit! I rebound quite easily, as it turns out, so the rule of thumb (for me, anyway) is not to take the same drug more than 2 days out of seven. Granted, this doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the number of headaches I actually have, but it is better than adding rebound migraines on top of the ones I already get. I'm on a long list of preventative drugs and we wouldn't have been able to see which ones of those were effective as long as I was in rebound.
If you're wondering--It takes 4-6 WEEKS to get your body totally out of rebound, something to consider when reaching for the medicine chest...

Hi everyone.I am also very skeptical and cautious using the triptans,my doc is telling me that you do not get rebound migs from them but to be on the safe side i try to use them as little as possible.Suffering from migraines for 40 years.A month ago i started using Zomig, have been using Imitrex 100 mg tablets(with some side effects) for 4 years.Out of 7 days only 2 days a week are pain free and having built high tolerance for pain i try to get away with only 1/2 of 2.5 mg zomig per day in pain.I also started taking "calcium channel blockers" as well as "Feverfew" capsules and "magnesium" supplements. After 4 weeks of this i am starting to feel some difference in the frequency and severity of the migs.I just finished 4 days on a row pain free, something that has not happened for a long time and today (stressfull day)got a mig and knocked it off completely with 1/2 Zomig. If you respond well to preventatives i think it's the way to go.They may not stop completely your migs but they will be less painfull and less frequent so you can use less triptans.

Best of luck and wishing pain free days to all.

bbird.

I had to stop--Cold Turkey! It was AWFUL! I was put on a Prednisone taper, which helped some, but otherwise, I just had to live through it with the help of Hubby & friends. I tried many preventatives, the ones that work for me are: Topamax, WellbutrinSR, Nortriptyline, MagOx, & Sansert along with wearing an Estrogen patch during my menstrual cycle. I am not allowed to take pain killers other than Vioxx or an extra Sansert due to the fact that I rebound too easily (You CAN'T take Sansert with the triptan-type drugs or you could go into heart failure). If I get a mig, I use Biofeedback and relaxation techniqes and just try to survive until I can sleep it off.

I take approximately 24 Zomig pills per month. It usually takes only one pill about 2-3 hours to abort an attack if I don't wait too long. I usually get 6 headaches a week. Usually Sundays are headache free! Cannot figure that one out. If I had rebound headaches, where are they on Sunday? My doctor is a headache specialist and all I can do is trust him. We have been through ALL of the preventative meds for over 13 years with no reduction in the # of headaches but I think the Zomig works well because of the preventative meds I do take (anti-depressant, beta blocker, muscle relaxer, NSAID). Until something better comes along and as long as the Zomig works.......I will continue to take it. What else can I do? It is the only way I can get through the day, week, month, year, etc.............Good luck and I hope this information helps you.

Hi Janlan!!
I also use Zomig. You said you take about 24 tablets per month - obviously your Doc thinks that it's O.K. My prescription is for only 6 5 mg.
tablets per month I wish I got more!! What strength are yours? Are you covered for that amount. (I hope so) Zomig is like buying GOLD!
Take Care. Moby

Dear Moby,
Not to intrude, but if you have only a few Zomig available, you might try what I do. With no insurance, it doesn't matter how many anyone allows me, but the cost is nearly prohibitive. However, you can buy the 5 mg Zomig and cut them in half. The 2.5 works for me, so that way I get 12 doses for nearly the same price as 6. They aren't easy to cut, and the pharmacist said not to cut them too far ahead of time--there has to be a reason they are sealed, right?--but it works for me. Even when they cut into two very uneven pieces, the smaller one works for a milder HA and I keep the larger "half" for the worse pain.

There's obviously serious disagreement on this. My doc had been basically allowing me all the imitrex I wanted, just said don't take more than 200mg/day. Then last year after a really bad month I had taken the max every day for 3 wks and suddenly it just quit working. Then the HA clinic chewed me out--said I wasn't supposed to take it every day. They called it rebound, I called it hell. I had the mother of all headaches for over a week, and they didn't want me to take anything, just let it run its course and then start all over. But I read some great stuff yesterday on the Robbins Clinic site, which is very reputable, and they cited a study using daily triptans as a preventive and after 12 months had not observed any problem with rebound. I don't know what to believe.
