"Pregnant with Horrible Migraines...Help!"
I am at my witts end people. I am 36 and pregnant with twins after 6 years of trying and 3 losses and while I am so excited about finally being pregnant I am also very miserable with horrible migraines every single day since I was 9 wks pg, I am now 13 wks. I have suffered from migraines since I was 8 years old. The last several years I kept them fairly controlled with Imitrex and Fioricet. when I first found out I was pg my fertilitly specialist and my ob/gyn both said taking the Fioricet and/or Excedrin without asprin in it was safe to take and if I needed to I could take it every day but try not too. The key is to take it right when I felt the migraine come on rather than to wait to see if I could tolerate it which is what I had been doing and was suffering alot because of it. So anyway my OB referred me to a Neurologist to see what else my options are and he was telling me not to take the Fioricet and to basically that I should be happy I am pg and that I should suffer thru the headaches, obviously the man has never had a 4 day long migraine with vomitting and the runs and not being able to move and only wanting to stick a drill thru the side of your head to make the pain feel better. So now what? I can't take Tyelnol or Ty 3 or Vicoden or Percocet, Dialudid, nothing works except the Fiorcet and Excedrin. Has anyone on here been pg with migraines and taken the Fioricet with no problems, what did your Drs tell you was safe to take. I certainly don't want to hurt my babies but I also don't want to suffer for days on end, I would think that would hurt the babies more than taking one and a half pills a day. I had read on several sites that even thought Fioricet is preg category C that many drs prescribe that to pg women with migraines and it has no known effects. Anyone out there please help!! Thx

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy.

Secondly, I am sorry you are feeling so bad.

I have never been pregnant but there are many people on here who have been through what you are describing.

I'm sure you will get some great advice. I wish I had some to offer but I just wanted to let you know that I am here.

-Take care,
nicole

COngratulations on your pregancy. I wish I had better news for you but when I was pregnant with my daughter, I had daily migraines for the first four months and I wasn't allowed to take anything. It was really hard to deal with but I didn't have much choice back then. They did let up until the last trimester and my doctor did let me take some vicodin in the last month or so because she was big enough then to be ok with a low dose of a narcotic. But the first trimester is so important for brain development that you have to be extremely careful with what you take. This was 17 years ago and maybe there are some alternatives that were not available then but I don't know for sure.

Congratulations! Meds during pregnancy are tricky business. I am in the middle of figuring out a plan for my own future pregnancy and it is a challenge.

If you are not comfortable with the neuro, then I would either find a new one or deal with your ob and family doc. I have had both my psychiatrist and neuro tell me that my ob is the expert on pregnancy. It is what they do all the time. I have found that there are a lot of misconceptions about meds in pregnancy.

The other piece of good advice I have been given is that sometimes there are good risks in pregnancy. It is not good for the baby or you to be in pain. Therefore the med risk might be worth it.

Hope this didn't seem like a lecture...sensitive topic for me at this time! Feel good!

I took Fioricet while pregnant with my two girls. I agree that it is the Ob/gyn's call as to what you should take for your migraines. I had my ob/gyn call the shots for us and that way I felt it was best for the baby.

Congrats on your two babies. How exciting having twins. As the time goes on hopefully your headaches will subside.

I also agree that it is not best for the babies if you are always in pain. But again, it is the doctors call.

Good luck and keep us informed of your progress.

Magnesium ought to be pretty safe, if you keep the dose reasonable. Biofeedback is very safe. Unfortunately these might not help much, but it's better than doing nothing.

Someone mentioned magnesium. I've read that this is one of the other supplements during pregnancy that is extremely important to have. Are you already taking a prenatal? If so, maybe you could also ask your Ob/Gyn if you could add even more mag. with an additional supplement? I personally don't know what the recommended or safe amount of mg. are during pregnancy.

But I do know that Mag. plays an important role in possibly safeguarding against preeclampsia during pregnancy. So, maybe it would be beneficial either way.

I didn't have migraines during my pregnancy, so I can't relate, but I hope you find something safe and effective so you can enjoy this amazing time in your life! Congratulations and I hope you're feeling much better soon!

Congrats on your pregnancy. Its such an exciting time in life, enjoy every minute of it that you can.

I've had migraines since age 12 and when I got pregnant at 30, they got worse. So much for the theory that pregnancy can stop migraines...

My OB/Gyn is a very conservative doctor and really recommended not taking anything when possible. But he also pointed out that my being in pain was not good for my baby either.

I got Fioricet to help me get by. I also used the ER when I was just hurting so badly that I couldn't stand the pain anymore. I did this after I had an appt with my DR. who insisted that the nurse take me to the hospital in a wheelchair (His office was connected to the hospital through a walkway). He did that after I showed up for an appt looking as he put it "Half dead and wishing it was all the way."

My daughter is a beautiful healthy 3 year old. She has had no problems (and believe me I read everything in the world on medication affects of the fetus, etc...) She was fine at the birth and is the joy of my life.

I hope you can enjoy your pregnancy and that the migraines don't plague you so much. It may be a rough couple of months, but it will pass quickly and before you know it you and your two beautiful new babies will be home.

9. "Pregnant with migraines"
Hi and Congratulations on your pregnancy! You and I have a lot in common. I too went through fertility after trying for 3 years. I am very excited to tell you I to am pregnant, 18 weeks and extremely thrilled! Isn't it amazing how happy you can be by the baby and how sad and frustrated you can be because of the migraines. I too feel guility even talking about the pain, but its real!!! I was recently prescribed fiorcet by OB. I cannot function in a day without taking something, usually fiorcet or tylenol 3. My OB gave me fiorcet as soon as I reached my 2nd trimester. She felt confident and that eased my nerves because I too can't see how pain, stress, depression and high blood pressure can be good for the baby. Nobody understands more than I do about your guilt feelings and pain. Move on if the neuro wants you to continue to suffer. Talk to your OB about the neuro's lack of help and stress "You are NOT functioning due to the pain!" Hopefully this will get a reaction. Hang in there and take one day at a time as hard as that sounds. I felt the baby move last night and I was so happy! Feel free to contact me to just chat because we are certainly in the same boat! Good luck and take care!

10. "I know your pain"
You're going to like my story.
I had a baby 2.5 years ago. I went through headache/migraine hell as well. When I found out I was pregnant, I stopped ALL my meds elavil, inderal, i think that's it??) immediately. Soon I felt the headaches come on. As time went on, I couldnt stand it. My neurologist and my obgyn concurred that the benefits to the mother(me) outweighed the risks to the fetus/developing baby. To tell you the truth, I just had to get by each day without crying my eyes out from the pain

So I started back up on the elavil, was on fiorinal, fioricet, percacet, tylenol with codeine, and a host of other pain killers.

I managed to get through the 9 months, though the pregnancy made the headaches, nausea, EVERYTHING, worse. I kept up with my ultrasounds, etc. so as to make sure everything was ok throughout the pregnancy.

I gave birth to a healthy baby girl with no complications. She's now 2, and although she was just diagnosed with Chiari 1 Malformation, that's due to heredity, I think. I also have it.

I wish you nothing but the best. Remember you have to live each day. As much as you want the best for your baby, don't suffer for 9 months straight. God will do what He has planned, so put your faith in Him.
Love, Susan

Thanks to all those who replied to my question regarding migraines during pregnancy. To those of you who have taken Fioricet did anyone take it during the first trimester. I had to I took it between 10 and 12 weeks, almost every day but only about 1 and 1/2 pills a day and I was ok. I am so afraid I may have hurt my babies are caused them birth defects. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks.

You should look into Dr. Dawnn Buse. She is a psychologist who works in a headache clinic and she deals with hormonal issues and headaches. She wrote an article about dealing with migraines during pregnancy. Try googling her and you might find some helpful advice.
Feel good!

Congrats and hang in there. It will get better!!!I also had my migraines get worse with my pregnancy. There were days I didn't think I would make it because of no abortives.

My Ob and my neuro got together and let me use Phenergan. I did end up in the ER about 3-4 times and got Demerol when I just couldn't shake them. It was usually after not eating or drinking for a good length of time. But this only lasted through the 4th month.

After the 4th month things settled down with the migraines.

Then I had the marginal abruptions and had a pump so they got a little worse. I found if I used the Phenergan I slept and did OK.

Just a thought. My migraines eased off for 10 years after I had Ryan. No ER trips. But now they are worse with severe vomiting. I think I'm going to be the female that gets worse with age and not better.

Have you considered seeing a homeopath? I am currently seeing a lisenced MD who practices homeopathic medicine. The intensity and frequencies of my migraines has been significantly reduced. Nutrition is one of the key factors in my recovery - many new foods added to my "NO" list. Many posting here mention magnesium - a vital supplement in the treatment of migraines. Enzyme Co-Q-10 is also advised.

15. "RE: Pregnant with Migraines"
Hi there.
I am also pregnant and suffer with migraines like you. I am now 14 weeks gone. I have cried buckets as I have taken several doses of my triptains during my recent first trimester and I am in fear of the worst. The triptains (sumatriptain) is the only thing that relieves the pain for me. I have had four misscarriages over the last year and this is another attempt. I feal strongly that the triptains have been the cause of my misscarriages but there is no evidence to back this up. l also have twins but one twin has not survived (demise of a twin) and I feel that the extra hormones play a big part in feeling rough at the moment...now you are further on to me...how is it going..are the migraines and sickness settling down? I am only allowed to take paracetamol and I am having botox injections, I feel verrry grumpy and don't go out. Let me know how you are coping.
Love Katherine.

16. "RE: Pregnant with Migraines"
First; there is hope. My nearly constant migraines disappeared after the first trimester in both of my pregnancies. The first 3 months, however, were hell.
I spent a lot of time worrying about a med I took before I knew I was pregnant--cafergot--for those of you that are old enough to remember. Both kids turned out just fine. It seems to me that fioricet wouldn't really be a problem. The ingredients are tylenol, caffeine, and a small amount of sedative. I would sit down with you ob and make sure s/he knows the how serious your headache problem is and work a treatment plan. Deb

Hey there, first off congrats on the pregnancy! I have been on fertility meds for the last year and am going to start invitro in two months and suffer from migraines. My doctor prescribes my demerol pills 50mg, it is pregnancy class B so it is one of the safest things to take and it helps as well. My father is also a neurologist (he practices in a different state than I live) but I always check everything with him, esp something this important and he agrees with the safety of demerol. He went to a meeting with a speaker ( I can't remember her name) but she specializes in women with migraines and pregnancy as well and Demerol is the only drug she will use. Hope this helps!

I've been there. I was afraid to take anything when I was pregnant. I suffered and kept an ice pack on my head most of the time!

This is when I learned that the meds weren't helping me that much in the first place.

Lie down, close your eyes, breathe and relax. I hope you find something that helps.

Hello!
I have been struggling with migraines during my pregnancy as well. I am taking fiorcet as I really need it, and have been from the beginning. (I am now about 19 weeks)I also go to acupuncture and physical therapy. I found that my midwife was the only one comfortable with me taking fiorcet- everyone else I talk to suggests I don't take it. The combination of acupuncture (2x's/week) and cranial massage/PT (1x's/week) they have been manageable. My neurologist has also referred me to a biofeedback specialist- which I know nothing about- anyone?
