"Nortriptyline, Topamax & Pregnancy"
I have been on Nortriptyline and Topamax for the last year and a half and just found out that I am pregnant (unexpected). I am weaning myself off the meds but can't get any information as to whether or not the fact that I have been on them for so long will have any effect on the fetus. Does anyone have any experienc with this situation? Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Jul-17-07 AT 10:38 AM (CMT)

Congratulations! Hope you have a healthy, pain free pregnancy!

Topamax is in the FDA pregnancy category C which means it is not known whether Topamax will harm an unborn baby. There apparently have been only a couple studies in humans, not enough to say good or bad.

Have you talked to your docs (the one who prescribed & your OB/GYN) about it and/or migraines during pregnancy?

I was on Depakote (also an anti-seizure that can be used for migraines, but is a different drug) and I know that Depakote can cause birth defects, it's category D. My neuro wanted me to wean off it and be off it for at least 2-3 months before I tried to have another baby. She did say that some docs are OK with just stopping it and trying immediately.

I was looking on the internet for the FDA category list, but this is as close as I could come to what I was looking for.

Congrats again!

ETA: I found this site http://www.safefetus.com/Search.asp
It doesn't have every med out there, but it's quite extensive.

Thanks so much for your help. One of my neurologists told me to wean myself off the drugs, while the other told me to stop immediately. They mentioned that there were other safer drugs I could take (I don't remember the names right now--I'm a bit consumed about the whole situation with my Ob). I saw the Ob/Gyn yesterday and he seemed annoyed with me as if I did this on purpose and was wreckless. That's not the case at all. I'm 45 and I don't have any children, of course, I'm extremely concerned. I assumed that I would never get pregnant. I went through several years of IVF with no luck. The Ob/Gyn even indicated that he thought I would probably lose the pregnancy. He also said that I should NOW start using birth control. If the pregnancy is viable, I'm finding another Ob/Gyn. I left the visit feeling awful. I haven't told anyone yet since I don't really want family members to start getting excited. All I can do now is hope for the best and wait. I didn't take my meds last night for the first time. I'll post again soon to let you know how the migraines do without them. I was told that the "half-life" is 2 weeks so I guess I'll start seeing changes then. Thank you again for responding and your kind thoughts. Martha

Wow, I'm sorry your OB/GYN was such a jerk. I would definately find a new one! Regardless of the pregnancy.

I will keep you in my thoughts that this baby is OK.

I'm hoping to get pregnant in the next couple of months. It would be nice to have a buddy

In another forum that I visit quite often there is a lady that had a baby girl (baby is now 2) who used topamax at 300 mg during her whole pregnancy for epilepsy and migraines and the baby is healty with no birth defects. I hope that comforts you and hope you have luck in finding a new OBGYN.

Thanks for the reassurance. Unfortunately, I just miscarried. I know when that happens, it's always for the best. I did stop my meds right away when I found out that I was pregnant and haven't started them back up again. I feel absolutely horrible. My head feels like it's going to explode and of course I'm very emotional (I think a combination of the pain, hormones and sadness). I did have a short period of time where I felt pretty good. I knew something was "different" before I even knew that I was pregnant. Given all that's transpired and all of the new information I got (especially about Nortriptyline), I'm going to reevaluate my meds at this point. It's good to know that Topamax can still be an option. Thanks again. Martha

Martha....I'm very that you've just miscarried. I was reading your initial posts and just itching to get to the last one and tell you to find an OB/GYN right away that would SUPPORT you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I am sorry that you had to be put through such an awful experience with the OB. Shame on that attitude he took with you.

I will be thinking of you, hoping your body takes good care of itself....and that your heart and mind will heal in time.

Supporting You,

Mianna.

Our Friday outing to the beach in Malibu to perk JackHenry up. Dinner at Neptunes Net on Pacific Coast Hwy. followed.

I am so sorry! I have miscarried 2 times. It's horrible. Let yourself feel the loss and heal. It takes time and don't worry about others.

You are in my thoughts and here is a big hug

Martha I am so sorry to hear that you miscarried. I wish I would have read your post sooner. I hate to say this, but it was probably the nortryptilan (sp?)that caused the miscarriage. I had the same situation several years ago while on the same medication so I completely understand what you are going through. Not only does it cause damage to the fetus, but it also interferes with birth control, which was not mentioned to me by my neuro at the time. I found that out later from my OBGYN when I had the miscarriage. Again, I am so sorry you are going through this time and if you need a shoulder or two we are here for you.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you are surrounded by loving family while you grieve.

If you are going to try to have a baby, I'm sure you will see what kind of migraine medication you can use that won't interfere with a possible pregnancy.

Keep us posted.
