"valium use in migraine treatment-any experiences?"
like most people visiting this site i have tried everything both within regular medicine and altertantive therapies to get relief from my migraines/constant daily headache. i went to my gp at the end of my tether again last week thinking there was probably nothing more she could think of to try but i guess i just wanted to ask the questions again. she prescribed me valium i think to calm me down but since then - 1 week and 2 days ago- i havent had a migraine. it may just be co-incidence but it may be as it has a muscle relaxant effect. i've still had headaches but not bad at all. i'm conscious i can't stay on this for very long so it is obviously not a long term solution and hte pain free time may end tomorrow but at the moment it is wonderful. so i was just wondering if anyone has any experience or stories to tell on the subject. i also by the way do avoid msg as i noticed the thread below this one and i think it was helping together with a wheat free diet until i started getting this really bad run about 3 months ago.

Alison, that's really great! I have used valium as a means of getting some rest during my bad spells, but not as a regular treatment for my migraines. As far as muscle relaxants go, I am on zanaflex, which is a muscle relaxant. I just got moved up to taking 1 mg 3 times a day now. That is supposed to help those with daily headaches.

That's great Alison! Your probably right on with thinking it's the muscles relaxing. Other meds in the valium family also do great things such as Lorazepam which is an anticonvulsant and is also prescribed as a relaxant. I haven't any clue on it's long term effects. I have read that Klonopin ( also in the family) when taken for insomnia may only be effective at a regular dose for 2 weeks. Do everything you can during this painfree period and enjoy!
Have you tried Magnesium Oxide and B2? They have really helped cut down on my daily headaches.

thanks very much guys, i had to reply as i am so excited at getting 2 messages already! i have replied to messages but i've never started a thread on this site.
i have tried magnesium and b2 but what i am able to get in the uk i'm not sure is the right dose and type, i went into the beetlebug magnesium site a while ago but i got a bit confused by it all! i see an applied kinesiologist over here and she gives me ionic mag and b2 which is supposed to be absorbed very easily but i don't know how the dosages compare.
is klonipin a valium type drug then, is it any less addictive? it does worry me that i may become dependent on this. they took me into hospital a couple of years ago as i was getting analgesic rebound h/as, i hardly take any pain killers now for fear of this but i'm no better off now than i was then.

Yes, Klonopin is in the valium family. As far as how addictive they can be, I haven't any clue. I know that valium can be addictive, but in regards to the level of possibility with the different forms, I don't know.
A drug website I really like is
http://www.rxlist.com
it is very detailed, quick and informative.
Take care,

I noticed that you said something about a wheat free diet. Are you also the one who said they went on the Atkins diet? Has anyone else had positive experience by cutting the wheat and/or carbohydrates from their diet?

6. "RE: valium use in migraine treatment-any experiences?"
Hi I was prescribed valium one time with my pain killer but the docs theory was that I start to panic when the migraine comes because I tense up fearing the progressing pain. For awhile it seemed to help and then it just stopped so I didn't have to worry about using it long term. BUt I remember we tried some of the same type of meds around the same time and they didn't do much for me but the doctor told me they work on muscles and give a calming effect therefor helping the pain meds work better and for alot of people it is beneficial to use both types of meds at times. If it is helping you don't worry about the addiction as only a small portion of chronic painers ever have to worry about addiction but dependency is another story. Being dependent though on a med is not the end of the world and it is not life threatening, so one has to way the relief it provides versus the side effects and long term effects of the med. YOur doctor should be able to help you with this info, tell the doctor if it is helping there may be a med of that type that is better suited for long term use. Who knows you may have found a med that is helpful in manageing your migraines, worry about the particulars once you found that med don't start worrying right away let your doctor help you through it. For some reason it is so hard to find meds that do help so when you find one don't dismiss using it because you are afraid of long term effects check it out first. Good Luck I am sending you my special wishes, hopefully this med will be helpful and who knows maybe it can be used safely over a period of time. Keep your fingers crossed. Bye Roxy.

Of course, for those who actually read my incredibly long post today, we now know (compliments of my *^$&# neurologist) that valium and narcotics have no place whatsoever in the treatment of migraines. Isn't that refreshing to know?

Hummm, maybe I am in a special catagory here, but relaxers didn't help me much. I didn't take them for migraines though, I took them when I was being treated for my depression. They made me VERY tired, I would wake up feeling like I had been hit by a truck (actually thats how i usually feel these days) Waking up like that and being groggy for so long seemed to trigger headaches for me.

But like I said, maybe it is because I am extra-specially weird ;)

9. "Valium?"
I have taken valium, but it seemed to make things worse when it wore off.... that is the frustrating thing- all these meds. work differently for everybody. But it sure gets tiring trying to find out the right combination to unlock the RELIEF! Good luck,
Holly

Painfree...

I tried the Atkins Diet, only to find myself in a caffiene withdrawal headache that mirrors some of my worst migs...

We have daily debates in our home about the feasability of Atkins for long-term weight loss. I just don't think that you cut out a whole food group and expect it to be healthy.

In my previous research...I came across an article that showed a diet HIGH in complex-carbs was successful in drastically reducing the number and severity of migs...

I think its a matter of finding what works for you I'm just not willing to give up my potatoes and bread till someone makes me

Sending out painfree vibes...
Christie

12. "RE:valium"
just in case anyone looks at this site for more info on valium- my valium bubble seems to have burst! i woke up really bad again today but i am grateful at least for the 2 week respite that i have had and i am coping more positively through the pain at least. i was going to come off the valium this weekend and see what happened anyway so i am going to do that and then take it from there.
