LAST EDITED ON Dec-02-09 AT 12:54 PM (CMT)

LAST EDITED ON Dec-02-09 AT 12:53 PM (CMT)

As many of you know, I have been running this site since 1996. A good friend of mine has been gracious enough to let me host it on his server for many years now.

Unfortunately, he will be shutting that server down in the near future, which means the site needs to either relocate or shut down by January 1, 2010.

I'm sorry for the short notice but I had this idea I would come to you all with a full plan, have done much more research, and everything would be as seamless as possible. Life, work, etc. kept getting in the way of that and time snuck up on me.

So, the long and the short of it is - if the site (migrainepage.com) is to remain active, this discussion forum won't be going with it. The code it's based on is ancient and no longer being updated. I would be hard pressed to find a server that would be willing to run the forum as it is and quite frankly, I wouldn't want to (it has numerous problems).

Therefore, I'm considering switching the discussion portion of the site to Google groups. I've started doing some tests with it (it's not public yet) and it seems like it may be a viable option. Current user names, passwords, etc. would not transfer over.

I would most likely be able to keep the threads from this discussion around so they would be readable, but no new posts would be able to be made to this forum.

The rest of the site (such as it is) could remain pretty much as it is now. The journal would need to be either taken off line or moved to a group as well.

Let me know if this idea seems worth pursuing. If there's not a lot of interest in switching to a Google group, then I won't continue exploring that option.

It's been a long run, and there are a lot of options - and better options - out there nowadays. Another idea would be for everyone who wants to, to start using a forum hosted on another site. If anyone has suggestions of good ones, feel free to share.

If any of you have experience with Google groups (I don't really) and want to share some advice or tips on being a group member, feel free to do that here also.

Thanks for all your support over the years. I really do appreciate it!!

I have just found this site and am beginning treatment for my CDH. I do not have anyone at home to support me or to talk to about my medications or pain, so i'd greatly support any type of forum even if it moves over to google. I find it of great comfort to know other people are experiencing the same things i am. I appreciate reading everyones posts very much, and when i'm having a tough moment I go through the journal. Please keep it around if at all possible. Thanks for making this resource available, and even though I am not very versed on forums I am okay with computers. If you need any help from me please let me know as I will do whatever I can. I know you are pressed on time.

I don't know enough to offer good suggestions.

But what I do know is that I feel like the rug has been pulled from under me!

It's by no fault of yours Ronda....like you said, Times, they are a changin'.

Being here since 2001-ish...it's hard to fathom ANY change here.

I support the best solution and will do my best to adapt. I'd hate to lose what has been here.

Mianna.

Ronda, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Running a forum takes time and energy ... both in short supply these days. I honestly appreciate all the effort you have freely given to all of us through the years.

As to the future, I will follow the crowd .. Google, About.com, anywhere. Where you all go, I will follow.

I concur here too--re: everything. I have been here since June 2, 2005--after my 2 shunt surgeries in April and May of that yr., and getting diagnosed in May of that yr. with my migraines. Much like my hydrocephalus support group I have been a member of since 1999 (joined at 16), this place has ALSO been a Godsend to me re: support.

I will also go wherever this wonderful place goes too.

I can't thank you enough for having created this site.

Many many thanks to you Ronda and to my Rondanian family.

Google has a migraine forum, unfortunately, Google has not been able to stop spam.

Yahoo also has a migraine forum, how about moving over to Yahoo and starting a second group or joining the Yahoo group?

From what I've gathered from my sister (who ran a Yahoo group for a while - not migraine related), those groups can get flooded with spam as well.

There are settings you can use to control who can post with both Yahoo and Google. If it's "open" then there's usually a lot of spam (with either Yahoo or Google). I would make the migrainepage group one that would require registration.

But if the Yahoo group is already in place and people would prefer moving to the existing group, that would be OK too.

Thanks so much for everything you've done over the years to keep this room going and safe. Its been such a refuge for me. I always felt like I could come here and vent when nobody else understood.

I've actually got tears in my eyes thinking about losing this connection.

My husband, Frank, is a computer guru. He said he would be happy to set up a private simple forum for us to use if you're interested.

Ronda,

I have no suggestions, but like the others, I will follow wherever.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating and maintaining this site. I, too, have tears in my eyes while I write this because the support and encouragement I've received from the members of this site have been priceless blessings to me.

I followed a forum on WebMD for years until it was shut down and this site was suggested.

I understand the work required to keep this going, but if there is any way to keep it going in whatever format is feasible, that would be my preference. I'm not sure what I'd do without ya'all.

Thank you so much,
Becky

As long as all the people here move somewhere new together I think (hope) the spirit should remain the same. Thanks for all your hard work over the years Ronda and I'm also happy to go wherever things take us.

I used to be a member of a delphi forum (not migraine) which was good as there was a private section that no-one could access until granted permission. This meant spam was rare and people could be candid without fear of unwanted friends/relatives stumbling upon their posts (and things didn't come up in google searches). There was also a public section too. Not sure if it would work for us but thought I'd add it as a suggestion.

Amy

Through the years, I have sampled several forums on many subjects, and have never found one so easy to use as this one.

I can hardly believe this is "ancient code"-- compared to others out there, this forum seems cutting-edge. I am just stunned at the thought of losing it.

A place to try may be WebMD.com. I'm not sure if they have a migraine forum or not but one or may be another type of one could be added. Just a thought.

I too have been coming here a long time though most don't know or remember me, I don't post very often but I do come here and read many of the posts.

At this time my migraines have been under full control for about 4 years now, unfortunately I had to destroy my back, ended up with chronic pain and take very strong long acting and short acting pain meds that just happen to help the head pain and has given me back some kind of what I like to call, "A life of my own."

Well, January is coming really fast so I hope decisions are made and if the site is going to live on or everyone is just going to move on, I hope there is time to get all the information posted.

One more thing, thank you to all of you, you have been a strong part of my life and though we never met I feel as if I know some of you personally and wish all of you a great, low pain future and hope it all works out for every one of you.

Rhonda...... Thank you so much for allowing all of us to come here, to live a little, laugh a little and take something away from here that is indescribable.

Thanks for all the support and offers for help, everyone!

I figure it's about time to give the groups a test run. It seems like this would work best for a variety of reasons, so if it looks like it'll work for y'all I think we'll be in business.

If things seem hinky there are options to change so let me know. Thanks!

I have the group currently set up so that I need to approve new users. This seemed like the best way to prevent spam. However, it means you may not be able to post immediately after registration as you could in the past.

The other option would be to allow anyone to post (which removes the need for a Google account as well) but then spam and bogus posts will likely become an issue unless each message is approved, which seemed a little less than ideal.

Thanks for your patience while the kinks are being worked out.

I use and run several Yahoo groups and have not found that they get a ot of spam. I do moderate so anyone who signs up has to be approved by me first which helps to eliminate spam.

Also, what about other free forums. Yeah, some of them have ads but not all. Here are a few forum suggestions, Bravenet, http://www.freeforums.org/, http://www.forumotion.com/, those are just some I found on-line.

I have to say that switching will be tough but I've been with Ronda's since '99 and I'll follow you anywhere. Hmmm...kinda sounds stalkerrish doesn' it? LOL

I have been playing around with forummotion a bit. It's not a bad option either.

I don't have a lot of info on the reliability, usability, spam control, etc. of the free group sites (maybe Frank can help me there). But if that style of forum is closer to what you want, I can link to one of those when the site moves as well.

Some of you have registered at the Google group - what do you think (pros, cons, etc.)? The 'downside' I see is the need to approve new users (to keep spammers out) so it's not 'instantaneous'. I was thinking that would be more of a problem up front, though.

Seems okay so far, to me.

The upfront approval process is no problem. If it keeps out spammers, etc., it's a good thing.

It will take a bit of getting used to just because it's different, but I don't think it will be too difficult for the majority to adjust to.

We need some more people to check it out and test it so we see what it's like when there are more posts.

Thanks so much for all of your work, Ronda!

I also want to say thank you so much for moderating this forum and for all your hard work on keeping this forum for all of us.

I have been on the forum for years, mostly reading and rarely posting, and it has been a tremendous source of support.

It is reassuring to know that I am not alone in the struggle to deal with migraine disease and chronic headaches. You have all given me the strength to keep trying new treatments and to have hope when it seems that none exists.

I have already gone to the google group and registered to join. I think once we get the hang of it, it should be great.

Thank you again Ronda and all us migraineurs!

Jane

Thank you so much Ronda for everything! I have been coming to this site for almost all of my 14 years of migraine pain and it's been a constant source of information and support. It's turned into an online family and real-life friends for me.

I'm not very familiar with hosting forums. I do belong to free communities on live journal, but they're set up a lot differently than here. I will follow the group anywhere, that's for sure!

39. "RE: Thanks to Ronda"
I have received numerous suggestions from people. Thank you!

After looking at a number of options, I'm thinking I'll trial two - Google Groups and one of the bulletin-board style forums.

So, at the risk of too much going on at once, I thought maybe some of you would like to take a look at each for a couple of days and then we decide on one?

I'm not sure which one would fit most 'seamlessly' into the site, but I can work that out.

The Google Group link is here:

http://groups.google.com/group/migrainepage?hl=en

And I made a simple forum on Forumotion also:

http://migrainepage.forumotion.net/

I figure Google'll be around for a while and is fairly reputable, etc. but it is more dependent on someone monitoring it quite frequently to approve users and such (and we all know I can be rather lax in that regard).

The other option is closer to what this forum currently provides, but since I don't have experience with that particular host, I would welcome opinions on that too.

Can I also add, that as well as sticking with Rondas, which has been a "life saver" for me, and many others...THANK YOU RONDA
I started this site a while back, but never really invited anyone.
The idea is not to undermine any others, but to try to correlate the wealth of info that is out there so that those, like myself who just cant go searching for it all might find it in one place.
This does occur, but is mainly either American or English, etc. I hope to unite that with this site so that we can all benefit.
Please take a look, if you hate, it, well that's ok, it might be a dumb idea after all.
Thanks

Oh noooo! whatever will we will do without Ronda!!! no matter where it will go it will never be the same

Well, (sob) no matter how I feel I understand Ronda all things sometime come to an end, and so this came too.

You did wonderful thing with Migrainepage here, and for that I too, am thoroughly and forever thankful - thanks to you and your idea, you gave me (and many others, I'm sure) my life back, my self esteem back, my sanity back.

I met so many wonderful people here, got so much wonderful support, info - it's invaluable. it's one of a kind, it's just so special this place here. I too thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating this site, for the excellent job you did all those years, and for keeping up with our shennanigans all those years

Thank you thank you thank you Ronda!!

I too will follow whenever we end up.
I have one more suggestion, though - has anybody heard of Ezboard forums or Yuku - there seem to be well organized internet communities where memership is free but I think to own a site has to be paid, so donations would be apprecciated.
It however looks very nice and safe to be there.
I used to belong to "Real Gardeners", an UK garden forum and from there to two migraine forum as well.

It was well organized and clean, no spam. It seem to be on Yuku now - it looks like Ezboard switched to Yuku:
http://www.realgardeners.co.uk/

Hmm In just looked up Yuku and it seem to be free?

I do not know whether it costs or if it is free.

It is possible to have a closed forum there, one that is open only to a select group of people. If someone not authorized tries to get in they get a message like this, "Sorry, but only users granted special access can read topics in this forum."

So far I'm happier (from an admin point of view and from the set-up, etc. of the forum) with the forumotion vs the Google Groups:

http://migrainepage.forumotion.net/

And the colors, style, etc can be adjusted too. I just started with something.

As for this existing forum - a good friend of mine was hosting the site for me on his own server, which gets hacked on a regular basis. This forum is a likely candidate as to why. The software is no longer being updated (I think the last update was nearly ten years ago), so upgrading it and moving it to another server would not be an option.

I prefer to move it to an existing, established free site for many reasons - not having to deal with a server or rely on someone to do that out of their own good will is a plus for me. Plus, keeping the forum 'separate' from the migrainepage.com domain means I can more easily hand it off to someone else when I decide to quit doing this altogether.

The site itself (migrainepage.com) is moving - I have a plan for that and it's in progress. So going to http://www.migrainepage.com will still work. The only change will be that you'll be discussing things on a different forum vs this one.

Hallo Ronda,

Sometimes I don't think I really have grasped the day to day running of a site/forum. Then I look at my hubby, on the computer regulating and checking his dog forum for several hours after dinner some nights.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Ronda!!!I don't know how to pay you back.

My husband has run his Dobermann forum for about 9 years now. He has run it for free at 'network 54'. I'm not sure if this sounds familiar. It has been good to him.

He just mentioned that you can pay roughly $8 per month if you'd like for the server to stop all advertisements and such.I'd be more than thrilled to chip in if this turns out to be an option.

Thanks again, Ronda.

Registering on Forumotion is as easy as 1,2,3 - you'll give off an orgiastic gasp after you'll realise how easy it is comparing to other lenghty online registrations, lol

All you have to do is create a nickname or use the same you have here, create a password and voila! done.

then you will receive an automatic mail sent to your email account at which point you'll have to click on it in order to confirm and ACTIVATE your new registration at Forumotion.

THEN you have to LOG ON on Forumotion, and now you can post

Dear Rhonda,
I have been meaning to write you for years to thank you for running this huge site so seamlessly, kindly and with so little down time--

...truly a wonderful gift to so many suffering people, and for those of us who have stayed with you for many years, a lifeline for all of us at one time or another.

Thank you for the love you imbued Migrainepage with, the fair and patient way you dealt with disagreements, and your constant, vigilant and considerate support.
Mishkyn

PS I agree with your sister, Yahoo Groups are just awful, you often have to click through 3 or 4 ads to read a post.

I hope MP finds a new home, but if not, please know you have my deepest appreciation and gratitude for running this magnificent forum which has blessed me with great advice, support, and a few remarkable friendships.

Unfortunately I discovered this site only recently after suffering from migraines for 20 years. There are so many health related sites around the net but I could only find one as unique as this one. I would venture to say that the members that visit here would be willing to pay a small membership fee to have our own quality site free of spam and full of valuable information. There are sites all over the net dedicated to various subjects, bands,tv shows etc., that carry forums, the main concern I realize is the cost of a server. After reading the responses,I think it's the consensus that we all NEED a site as an outlet and an information exchange. Sometimes the interaction between people who share the same situation can be as soothing as the medications that are prescribed by the doctors we visit.

You re getting old when you get the same sensation from a rocking chair that you once got from a roller coaster.

I will add my part -- thankyou so much Ronda for all you do for us who hurt. This website is a wonderful gift for me -- so many wonderful people here. Many who have helped me in so many ways. Sorry you now have all this work finding us a new home.

What ever is decided is fine. I will follow this website forever. I do not ever want to lose my friends here. Thanks to all of you for giving Ronda advise on what to do on finding a new site. I am not much help. Thanks again. Billy Ray

83. "RE: forumotion is way better"
I've been away for a while, too overwhelmed with my health problems and other stuff to get online much. So I just saw this post today when someone on the misc. forum commented on the move.

My question is whether you'll still be able to have a misc forum connected to the migraine forum. I personally have found that to be much more healing for me than just talking about migraine treatments and such. It is more therapeutic to be able to talk about life, knowing that the other ones listening don't need me to explain to them just why I am nervous about going to Brazil tomorrow (for three weeks to visit my brother) or why I was so pleased to be at a 5 at my friend's wedding in June.

I personally don't really need much advice about treating migraines, just about dealing with life.
