"Migrinal"
I have finally been able to convince my internist and neuro to let me try Migrinal. I am hoping this will help me avoid a few ER visits.

Can you tell me if this med helps you? Do you have any side effects from it?

Thanks!

I've used Migranal In the past. No side effects I remember. I don't use it now because I've moved on to other drugs. Good luck.

Rachel

LAST EDITED ON Dec-02-09 AT 10:49 PM (CMT)

Hi ShelliB, Migranal has been a great drug for me with no side effects and lasting pain and nausea relief. Of course, each person has their own story to tell about different drugs but it works for me. It was prescribed by my doc who is a headache specialist. After years of triptans not really working well I finally have a rescue treatment that does its job! Now if I could only find a preventative. Good Luck! Flowerchild

Same as Flowerchild said. This drug is my life saver. It not only prevents a migraine from developing if you take it immediately, it will knock one out if you already have one (this takes longer but works). I have been able to live pretty much migraine free with this drug (and no side effects). Like Flowerchild said, if I could only find a preventative--

I hope this works as well for you as it does for me. You don't hear much about it on this forum and to me it is the best solution out there so far!!

I asked my doctor for a sample, because of you, Linda, and now I'm waiting for the next migraine to try it. Do you have to take pain killers while it works, or is it fast acting?

Angela. Did you get the nasal spray? What I do when I first "think" I'm getting a migraine is I give myself a squirt and sometimes this is all I need. Other times I use the whole vial. It is all a matter of timing the migraine. If I am too late (which doesn't happen often)I use the whole vial and rest in a dark room, etc., but the stuff still works in hours vs. days if I didn't take anything.

I sure hope it works for you. I carry it in my purse, car, next to my bed, everywhere so I am always ready. I use the pain killers if I don't catch it in time to ease the "waiting" period. They also relieve anxiety somewhat which I get when one comes on, especially if it is at a bad time. I think this helps speed up the aborting time. I do use them sparingly though so my body doesn't get use to them. I also will use a triptan on occasion instead of the Migranol just to be using something different. I only do this if I "think" I may be getting one. If I "know" I'm coming down with one I will use the Migranol which I know will work.

I wish you luck!! I wish everyone had something that works for them.

I have the nasal spray. It says to squirt 4 in the air first. !! this concept kills me to toss expensive medicine in the air !! Do you get more than one use out of each vial?

I guess I will have to experiment.

I get violently ill from this med. I suggest sticking near a washroom the first time you use it.

It was effective though.

My neuro then switched me to oral ergots. They work for random migraines, but not if I'm having a full-blown multi-day attack.

I used to use this and found it very helpful if used before the pain gets too bad, it used to take up to two hours to work.

I agree with you Angela, I used to think it was
such a waste quirting some of the medication in the air, but I guess there's a reason!

I do not squirt anything in the air. I used to do that with the old vials but with the new bottles with the already to use spray, I do not. If I squirt at the very first inkling of a migraine, I may need only one squirt so a vial can last me awhile. If I wait too long it takes the whole vial and on a rare occasion I'll even open a new one and sometimes that one last squirt is what does the trick. That is rare though.

I can't wait to hear what you have say about it. It works miracles for me.

The instructions I had said you could not re-use the vial after something like a day. Read your instructions for the specifics as I haven't taken this in awhile. They are more than single use, I think two doses plus extra, but not meant to be saved as they go bad or something (why they are individually packaged).

They do give you enough to "waste" some of it as that is what you need to do to prep the medication to give a full squirt when you actually use it

I know, tortousgirl, and a good point, but the cheapskate in me says I can bend the rules. It also says you can't cut an Imitex, but I've done that a few times. You are right though. Proceed with caution. There may be a good reason. Thanks for pointing that out.

13. "RE: Migrinal"
I can't find any information about why, but the instructions do clearly say not to reuse it. I think it was something to do with the safety of the medication and/of the effectiveness. Medications are one thing I don't bend the rules on, especially when you don't know why.

I know some medications when not treated properly (stored correctly, temperature, expiration, etc) can actually become dangerous to your health.

I wouldn't take the chance without knowing at least why the manufacturer instructs this. If it is just that it is less effective it would be ok, but since you don't know that...

Best wishes.

Expired medicines are not always safe to use.

Last summer I had to battle a nasty Salmonella infection. After long contemplation as to the source; the most likely suspect is some long expired (though still sealed) liquid Ibuprofen that I took for severe toothache pain.

Angela, I am like you on this one-- cheap. I've been using this for probably 10 years and can attest to the fact that I had no ill effects from saving what is left for the next episode. It is possible it isn't as effective. I don't know. I do know I had no dangerous effects though. By all means, read the the directions though and don't do what I do just because it has worked for me. Had to throw this in though so you don't worry if you do chose to do this.

By the way, I have 2-3 migraines a week so it isn't like I'm saving it for weeks, just a few days sometimes.

Thx for the info, everyone.

Pretty sad.

Looking for the magic ingredient!

Migranal is only good for 8 hours after the seal has been broken. It has a very short life. If you are using it like the directions say...you have more than enough in the vial for the recommended dosage. the 4 initial pumps are to make sure that you are getting the full dose of the spray. I would take something for nausea when the first dose is taken because my daughter feels pretty sick when she takes it.
