"Day 101"
Today is day 101 with this migraine. I'm back at a 9. I'm no longer allowed to use stadol and my neuro won't give me anything for pain.

Went there yesterday and saw the NP. She upped my lidocaine pills and that was really it.

She said that the reason they can't give me pain meds yet is that they want to see how my body will react to everything else first. So I asked for an appointment next week. I literally broke down in tears in her office when she said no stadol and no other pain pills. What am I supposed to do?

Rachel

I toatlly understand, and am so sorry you are going through this.

My botox finally got my head back off of the rollercoaster, though I'm still suffering a lot.

I honestly don't know what is wrong with docs sometimes, when you say you are having a nine, they should be addressing this.

I got the run around big time this last ride. I had a stash of emergency meds though, luckily.

I'm going to meet a new GP next week. My GP is in another city and often away, so I end up seeing locums. I'm hoping this new one and I connect.

Have you had any injections in your head?

Yes, I've had trigger point injections. They actually wear off in a day or two but gave me some relief.

There's stadol somewhere in the house - my husband picked up a refill but won't give it to me. I broke down in tears to him & told him I hated him & that I wanted to die from the pain. He didn't care, told me it was for my own good. UGH.

Migraine husband, you'd give me the drugs cause you understand, right?

My next appointment is Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm hoping to tough it out as best I can till then.

Rachel

Hi and welcome to the wonderful world of chronic migraine!.

Ok, sorry just kidding. I have been dealing with chronic. intractable migraine for 12 years now. I am so sorry to hear that you have been dealing with this monster for 101 days. It is not pleasant. I wish I had more advice to give you. All I can say is to hang in there- things will get better- at some point. There will be a medication that can help. You will certainly a good neuro who has dealt with this before. I know you can do it. If you have any questions or need any support- you came to the right place.

I know it is hard to hear, but you can do this. Also, if you want any advice or have any questions, feel free to ask. you can also email me if you like. Please hang in there and don't give up.

As to the medication situation, I have been in that position myself. Here is the logic behind the "no pain meds" rule. It is possible to get into "rebound headache"- this occurs when the medication works against the situation. You basically get stuck in a catch 22. The medication that helped, then fuels a headache, you take more medication, the pain subsides, and when it comes back you take more medication. It is a vicious circle. Your doctor is trying to make sure that rebound is not the cause of this headache. I know there are some medications- Aleve- to name one, that are supposed to carry less risk of rebound and this might be worth looking into. How long have you been off pain medications? That is sort of the marker for rebound potential. There are also other options- hospitalization for DHE or Depakan is one. If the pain is that bad, please discuss it with your dr.

I hope that this helps.

Pain free days,

Howdy Rachel

Sailing Muffin is correct about the dangers of over use of pain relieving medications.

But I also consider the quality of life. If your pain is all consuming and prevents daily activities ... driving, cooking, dressing ... and you find yourself ina quiet dark room for days on end ... then I believe the risk of CDH is worth it.

Real sorry to hear of your pain. Hope it breaks soon.

Very quick update. We had a refill of stadol that we got filled because our healthcare took care of it, as we met our deductible. So my husband has the stadol hidden. I think I previously explained that.

First snow of the season here.... Yeah!!! And I'm in hell. Literally been crying on and off all day. Richard, I have no quality of life to speak of. Called the neuro service and got prednisone ... My third bout of this nightmare.

Anyway, I must have been a real PITA to my husband because he finally gave in and allowed me two sprays of stadol!!!

And so I use my time writing to my friends before going to sleep. My raging 10 is down to a 2.

It's not the drugs talking when I say that I don't know how I could cope without you all.

Speaking of which, Dan, where are you?

I've been AWOL dealing with my own migraines. This is the first time I've been able to look at a computer screen, and that won't be for very long.

Rachel for someone dealing with the level of pain you are, it simply cruel to withhold pain meds from someone. I can hear the desperation in your voice.

I've been down this road with my wife. Letting someone who doesn't understand chronic pain regulate your meds can never work. Somehow you need to convince your husband to let you have your Stadol.

I don't know much about Stadol; is it a narcotic and/or addictive?

Dan

I hate who I've become, trying to escape who I am...

Stadol is an opiate antagonist and can be addictive for some people as all opiates can. It is unique in that it comes in a nose spray and has a very quick effect. It is primarily used for migraine and childbirth pain.

Dan - sorry to hear of your bad migraines as well. Where are you? I'm on the East CoAst and we got snow, which triggered my rager.

Stadol also causes rebound headaches which is why they don't want me on it. But after 15 weeks, I think I'm dealing with a little more than rebound.

Rachel I live in Michigan, right on the lake. Which means during the winter, lake effect snow is always a possibility.

I might call my PCP tomorrow and see if this could be a possibility as an abortive drug for myself. Right now my headache is down to a dull roar and nothing is working.

Rachel,

First, let me say, you have all my sympathy. I really really hope you can kick your migraine soon.

Then kick your husband. And I am only half joking.

I'm a stadol user as well, so I understand the ins and outs of this medication.

First of all, I've been on this med for years. It's the only thing that works when I get an 8, 9, or 10 migraine. Even trips to the ER are hit and miss. Stadol works 99.9% of the time.

To withhold that from you when you've been in pain for as long as you have, and for the severity you've described, is disturbing. It's cruel.

Your husband thought he was acting out of concern for you, but once you get your migraine under control, you might want to sit down with him and explain that, unless he is suffering the same pain you are, for as long, he can't understand what you are going through, and he needs to help you defeat it first, then figure out ways to prevent it.

I think its very hard for non-migraineurs to understand our pain, and understand what we go through daily. They can't comprehend what that level of DAILY pain would feel like, ergo we must be exaggerating. We couldn't possibly be feeling that every day.

And, if we are able to function, we must not be in pain. They don't realize we've schooled ourselves in how to function minimally because the alternative is to just not live.

Your husband needs to understand that hiding your medicine and making you beg him for it is not helping you work through your problem. If its a rescue med (which Stadol IS), its for emergencies. What you described sure sounded like an emergency to me.

And if he can't understand, I hate to say it, but then he loses the privledge of sharing in your healthcare decisions. You don't have to discuss what happens in your dr. appts. with him if you no longer feel it's beneficial to you to do so.

Good luck, Rachel. I genuinely hope you aren't suffering any longer.

I love it... Kick the migraine then the husband! Can I do it the other way around???

Actually, it's my doctor that doesn't want me taking ANY narcotics for a year. We'll have to see if I stay with him with this new information.

I've been seeing his NP on a weekly basis and today she gave me Zyprexa. She explained it to me and so did my pharmacist. Scary med. And I can't have stadol. Wonders never cease.

I do have a few bottles left and I'm supposed to go on a cruise in January. I'm hoping we can take the bottles with us because I'll be much more active that way.

Hi.. Richard I bet you you get tired as I do reading the Post form the "cool-aid drinking" use no pain medication crowd. They take a true possible scenario preached to them from there doctors and then feel the need to restate it like a broken record.

Pain medication over use is so over blown as a cause of a persons chronic pain. I am with you treat the pain dam it! If she has been in days and days of pain without taking any pain medication that eliminates the "rebound headache" bull crap theory.

When will people stop with the dam evils of pain medication use preaching. It always comes from someone who is as they sign "Pain Free and Sailing". It is so easy to preach to someone to "bare with" and all will one day be wonderful when your pain free. People need to wake up and realize for some pain medication is the only way to have any life.

I firmly believe that if you don't agree with the treatment, you have the right to seek another option/second opinion. I went to a pain specialist who wouldn't put me on Stadol but had no problem pumping me full of useless vicodin (which is addictive, too). Go figure. I stopped seeing him and went to another dr.

Only you can evaluate your quality of life and what you are willing to do for it. Not your husband and not the dr. If being off narcotics for a year will improve your quality of life, then try that. But if the alternative is being on a med that scares you, then think that through carefully too.

Good luck.

I went off all my meds before and its hard and scary. I eventually went back on them but in a much lower dosage, and I believe the dr. and I have found a happy medium for me. For example, I was on 2 vials of stadol every 2 weeks for years (first nuero had me on that). I developed a high tolerance for it, and my other pain meds lost their efficacy.

My 2nd nuero was the aformentioned useless pain specialist. My 3rd nuero has me cut back to 1 vial of stadol a month, and that works for me. I'm not dependent on it as a primary painkiller any longer, and I use it for what it's meant for - a rescue medication when nothing else works.

So I guess I think that it's good for you to cut back, Rachel, but the "no narcotics for a year" thing sounds so drastic. I'm skeptical. And to hear you have a cruise planned. It sounds like you'll need the rescue med on that trip, and I worry what kind of vacation you'll have without it.

And the holidays can be tough too! I always have a rough time at the holidays. Stress, I guess.

Good luck Rachel. Hang in there. Let me know if you want to talk, it sounds like we have similar problems. I'll give you my email.

Be strong!

My email is in my profile. I would definitely like to talk more.
I was also using a vial a week before this doctor stepped in, buy I got them from my PCP. This is a new HA doc for me and the no narcs sounds iffy and my husband and mother says that I sound like a druggy. If they only knew.

The Zyprexa knocked me out from 7 pm to 8 am. Obviously can't take that during the day, so I suffer. I just woke up from a nap (if you can believe it) and will be going to dinner shortly, then taking the med again.

Ah, what a glamorous life I lead... But I did go to a meeting for Tastefully Simple this morning (Im a consultant but am going on medical leave) and got my puppy's picture taken with Santa.
