"I've found something that's helping...."
I am almost afraid to say this, but a combination of Neurontin and amitriptyline (Elavil) is HELPING me...

I would estimate that the M's have be cut by at least 50 percent. I am just amazed--

I don't expect to get relief 'forever' because things have worked before, and usually my body can eventually find a way around them, so to speak.

But for now, praise God, I don't have to take a triptan every day. Some days I don't even think about migraine.

I have tried both drugs separately before; Neurontin helped for a while, Elavil not at all.
But the two together seem to be working...

Can you tell I am amazed??

I wanted to post this in case someone else wants to try it.

God bless you all,
Holly

holly, can you please post the doses of each? neurontin is one of those drugs which is all over the map, dose-wise.

elavil gave me terrible dry mouth, and didn't help. (by itself, that is). does it do that to you?

yes, i'm amazed and delighted for you! maybe some others of us can try this, tweaking doses to fit our bodies. thanks, dianne

I have heard the anti depressant and anti seizure preventative combo is very complimentary, and many will get much more relief on a combo than one preventative. So glad to read! I hope you find some prolonged relief.

Do keep in mind than many times the relief will diminish a bit, but you may be able to get a few years out of the combo before you need to mix it up. I hear of few people who get the same relief on the same meds for more than a few years as it is typical to need to switch them due to tolerance.

Elavil seems to help with the intensity of my migraines and other aches but I am having terrible sweeling as a side effect. Are you having that problem??

I take 1200 mgs. of Neurontin at morning and at night (2400 mgs. a day), and 25mg. amitriptyline at night.

This may be a big dose of Neurontin for some people, but I have taken it on and off for years, and have worked up to a large dose. I was already taking the 2400 mgs when the dr. added the amitriptyline.

I haven't had any swelling - at first I felt kind of 'detached' from my hands and a little dizzy, but that went away within a few days. I actually cut the amitrip. in half for a few days, but the M's crept back, so I went back to the whole pill. (25 mgs.)

I hope it will help someone else. I am happy not to be forced to beg triptans from my dr. for a while at least.

God bless,
Holly

That is such wonderful news, Holly!!!! I hope it keeps working long-term.

Does it feel weird not to have a migraine or think about it for a day?

God bless you,
Becky

Thanks!
The only drawback is that both these drugs have weight gain as a side effect...

I've gained 5 pounds - I hope I can hold it there. My back won't stand it if I gain a lot...

But it is weird not to think about the monster..!

A co-worker of mine combines the neurontin and a strong anti-inflammatory as a preventive. She went from 2-3 migraines a week to 1 a month. I already have the strong anti-inflammatory from a car accident and take 25 mg of amitriptiline so maybe I'll ask for the neurontin and do some experimenting with both of your combinations. Thanks for sharing.

Such wonderful news, Holly! I'm so pleased for you. I really hope that the combo keeps working for you.

I won't be able to try it because the Amitrip. causeed tachycardia for me. Having a heart beat at 180 per minute isn't good....

So glad you found a magic bullet if only for a little while.

Sounds like a good plan, but please at least inform your doctor to check that this interaction is safe for you. Also check your pills are not expired. Better actually to have a new script to be sure your doctor recommends this.

The combo was the drs. idea. So he knows all about it...
Thanks for your concern...
