"Aura"
I have a quick question. I was wondering if anyone out there that experiences aura like I do has found anything to lessen or shorten the duration of the aura when the migraine is on its way.

Right now mine seems to last roughly 3-4 hours and I am basically incapacitated for that time without the ability to see and it scares the sh!t out of me.

I can take the naseauting (sp) headache and intense pain, I just am having a hard time with the loss of vision.

Any suggestions and help are very much appreciated!

I'm with you there!! My docs have (to their credit) spent a lot of time trying to get my pain levels down, but I keep stressing to them that what drives me to insanity is the aura, but still no solutions. I guess that means the medical profession is a little at a loss.

I've heard all sorts of things - neurontin has good reports of lessening auras. My migraine specialist said that a good whack of aspirin could reduce aura time (like 2-3 times the recommended dose - be careful!). However, I'm not sure this has ever worked for me.

There were posts last month about taking a half teaspoon of salt to reduce aura symptoms, but I'm not tempted to try that one, given that dehydration is a big trigger for migraine!

In short - no answers, but plenty of sympathy from me.

Any of the usual migraine prevention drugs may help. I suggest starting with the anti-seizure drugs, since they are designed to calm down the brain.

There are quite a few medical papers that say lamotrigine may be especially good for prolonged aura, although it's a bit dangerous.

My doc put me on Neurontin, of which I take the generic. My main complaint was constant aura, 24-hours a day. It has really, really reduced the severity of every single one of my aura symptoms, including visuals, smell sensitivity, and even the tingling left side of my body.

I couldn't be much happier with a drug. It doesn't make me sleepy or foggy. I know lots of people take it for sleep and it can cause intense drowsiness, but for once, I got lucky and can tolerate something that *actually* helps me.

I still have migraines 2 to 3 times a week, but the duration is way down.

Best of luck to you!
