"topamax for weight loss."
I was told recently by a doctor that sometimes they use topamax, and a side effect of it is weight loss. I've put on 70 pounds in 2 years because of amitriptlyne and zyprexa. Anyone using topamax for weight loss?

You know Tucker I noticed you also took Effexor. That medication also can cause tremendous weight gain in my experience.

I am not sure how Topomax works for weight loss, especially if you continue to use the meds you think are causing such weight gain. I was not able to tolerate the side effects. My Dr. calls it Dopeomax because it makes people so dopey.

Tucker--I took topamax for a few months as a migraine prophylactic. Although I am not overweight and did not try to change my diet I lost about 10 lbs. Of course I had diarrhea all the time and never felt hungry. Also had continuous intermenstrual bleeding and felt angry and agitated all the time. Wasn't worth it for me.

Tucker,

I'm on Topamax myself. I'm still trying to decide if I like it. At first my mind felt fuzzy. But I think it's getting better. It was hard for me to think. My doctor told me it will help me lose weight too. I gained about 40 pounds from the depo-provera shot. I don't know if I lost any weight. I don't weigh myself. It's to depressing. I go to the doctor Sept. 4th. I'll see then if I lost any weight. Good luck to you.

was it the Topamax? I would get a gyn checkup, that sounds suspicious to me. Then again I am rather paranoid

Can't know for sure that it was the topamax, 'cause I'm at that wierd age when the reproductive system goes haywire. That in itself may make me more susceptible to that particular side effect. But it is a bona fide side effect listed with the prescribing information. Just my luck. The wt loss is kind of neat, though. Mine stayed off for about 6 months after I quit taking the topamax. My reason for quitting was the emotional side effects. I would cry at the drop of a hat, and felt angry all the time. Neurontin did the same thing, all though it was not as pronounced. There again, maybe my precarious hormonal state made me more susceptible.

but not for spelling!

I was on Depakote and gained a lot of weight. My neuro picked the new med based on the weight loss side effect (really cool guy- didn't nag me abt the weight either!)

The ramp up sucked (very tired, blah blah) but it controls my "twinges" intense 2-5 minute migraines, every few minutes, all day and night. The only thing it does not whip is the menstrual mig.

I lost 10-15 lbs, but I am not exercising now so I am sure that if I did any exercise I would lose a lot more (I am about 90lbs over, although I am big to begin with and carry it OK).

Good luck, give it a try, and exercise as much as you can.--Take care, Di
