"The Bad Guys"
I have spending a lot here recently. It is only natural that on a migraine forum, one will read a lot, a whole lot, about pain and suffering.

And one will read a lot, a whole lot, about "the bad guys." You know "the bad guys" don't you? we write about them a lot here.

1. Insurance companies - managed care in particular in the USA, now Canada joins the hallowed rank of "bad guys."

2. British Socialized Medicine - makes you wait for appointments

3. Neurologists - would rather be treating tumors and strokes and Parkinsons - if only they had a migraine for one hour they would understand

4. ER Staff - we save up special venom for these bad guys - treat us like druggies

5. Family and Friends - If only they understood the pain, why in the world are thy doing whatever it is they are doing

6. Pain Managers - whatever are they thinking giving us so much / so little of that drug

7. The Media (Print and Electronic) how dare they portray doctors / drugs / ER's / migrainers in such a fashion!

8. The Medical Establishment in General - Why can't they cure me!!!

9. Lawyers - chasing ambulances and trying to make a buck.

I have to laugh. We have LOTS of "bad guys" because we get so frustrated. And because there is LOTS of misunderstanding and misinformation and LOTS of pain and agony. What a mess.

Hang in there!

Richard

LAST EDITED ON Jan-23-02 AT 11:52 AM (CMT)

There are lots of "Bad Guys" out there. I have alot of trouble with this. It's so funny I can remember when My migraines began that the first time I went to the ER It wasn't that big of a deal to get a shot of Demoral. I was so sick. I thought it was normal to sit there for 4-5 hours. Then when my husband became my husband in 99' and my migraines began to get worse through the years-more trips to the ER and the DR.'s and he started to notice how terrible they treated me there and how bad they made me feel, you realize the "Bad Guys." It's horrible.

The Insurance companies.. I could rant and rave on and on. The hospitals. How much they charge for a Tylenol? Like $20.00 for one pill. It's crazy. The Bad Guys.. My hospital bills have been out of this world for this past year. We have spent so much money in Dr. bills and Hospital's. It's insane...

We all have to hang in there... You do the same Richard..

P.S.-The media... How they portray the migraine patients as Drug users and abusers.. Oh.. don't get me started...

In response to some of the "bad guys" I have to say kudos to my "good guys"!

My husband - after 18 years he has reached a point of compassion instead of frustration. As long as he sees me taking my vitamins, exercising and trying be healthy he is very, very compassionate..... We are both working on the giving and taking to make our marriage a success!

My kids - they are 11 and 15 and have become much more willing to help with chores in the house. On my good days I work really hard at spending "quality" time with them so they can give back to me on the bad days.

In our house we have a Bank Account System - you can't expect to make a withdrawl when you haven't made a deposit. We all have responsibility to make sure our accounts aren't overdrawn. Don't get me wrong, we still don't have it perfect but we are working towards peace and harmony. (Of course we have been through counseling to get to this point --- VERY IMPORTANT!)

My Doctor - I have been in two different states and through many, many doctors - most of them were the bad guys - but I have a pain managment doctor now that is the most caring Doctor I know. We are constantly working towards a place in life where I can function "normally" (what ever that is) most of the time.

Now for the Bad Guys:
* Cold doctors - need a migraine themselves
* ER's - Never use them anymore - hate the waiting and the labels they give us
* Bosses that don't understand - After many jobs and many clueless bosses I am very fortunate to have a job that I can set my own hours and even work from my house. I have to be motivated or it would be easy to be a slacker.
* Insurance companies - unless you can get group coverage (which I now have) you either get increased rates or a rider placed on you!

Pain Free Days to All!

I guess we have to laugh or we'd cry. I think blaming is what I do when I feel helpless to change something, or someone. Maybe it's human nature. But my own nature is also to play devil's advocate, and as an insider in the health care system, and someone who has friends and family in law, and health insurance, (none in pharmaceuticals, wish I did), I can almost always see the other side if I try.

My husband says I try too hard and I let people off too easy when they should be doing a better job. But blaming takes alot of energy, so though it is a useful distraction at times I think I do better not spending too much time on it!
