"Migranal (Dihydroergotamine Nasal Spray)"
Just wondering if any of you that use migranal has the same problem that I have, although I'm not sure it's directly related to it but it seems to be worse a day or so after using it. I notice that especially when I'm lying down (worse on my back), I can really feel (and hear) my heart pounding, it gets to the point where it's really uncomfortable and scares me a bit. Once in a while it seems to skip a beat too.

Can anyone relate? I'd appreciate hearing from you if so, thanks a lot. Ruth

My experience with DHE was similar or maybe a little worse. I felt like I was having a panic attack, although I didn't feel like I was dying. Instead I felt like I had to get up and run away from something. I wasn't sure what that "something" was........myself maybe? All I know is that I had to stop taking it. It was such a horrible feeling that I was not willing to trade the migraines off for the anxiety side effect. I hope in your case that it works for you and the side effect dissapears after awhile.
All my best,
~Tink~

I have just recently started using the Migranal Nasal Spray (for about a week now) and so far have not experienced the side effects you have. I do get very congested and cannot breathe through my nose for about 3-4 hours after using it. It does relieve my headaches fairly quickly though and I can put up with the congestion to have the pain relief. I will watch out for the anxiety side effects, however, because I have had panic attacks in the past and I am on a daily anxiety medication for them as well.

I used Migranal at one time,,,didn't use it for very long due to the fact that when I used it I broke out in a terriable rash,,I was covered in red blistering rash that hurt like all get out.
I also felt like I was having a heartattack while on this, my chest was heavy and felt like someone sitting on my chest I also get this way when using Imitrex. I used it only twice ..my doctor told me at the time to "lets keep you on it for a week or 2 on lets see if these syptoms go away" I thought he was nuts to keep me on and told him so needless to say he was not my doctor for long. Please just becareful and talk with your doctor if this still continues.

Hoping we all have pain free days .

Thanks a lot for your input. I have been using migranal for a few years now but I have noticed the pounding heart on and off for some time and did mention it to my doctor but he didn't seem too concerned.

I have never suffered an anxiety attack from it and often find it does help the migraine although it takes about 3 hours and often leaaves me feeling a bit nauseated and very congested.

Maybe I will mention it again next time I see him. Thanks again. Ruth

Wow, I use Migranol too for several years now. It did however, make me nauseated in the beginning, and it has gone away. If I use it alot, I do feel tired the next day, heavy feeling.

Just yesterday I went to the neuro and renewed my perscriptions and she again, assured me it was not in the triptan family. It is in the eurgo family which is a blood contrictor too, like the triptans. It is created from soemthing different. And using it to much can bring on the tired, heavy feeling, and some people do feel the breathing issues.

A few years ago I was taking it 4 times a week and I did notice I was sluggish, but the triptans were worse, they seemed to make me feel like I wanted to jump out of my skin.

I feel like all this crap is trade for trade anyway. Which side effect do we want to deal with. For me I choose to feel a little heavy and sluggish vs feel like I ran around the world and never left my bedroom. I really prefer not getting the migraine in the first place, but then there is a place for people with my thinking.....lol. Have a great day, Sunshine.

Thanks for the information Sunshine. I too would still rather feel congested and sluggish and nauseated etc. than have the awful pain, but of course I wish we didn't have to take anything. There's not too much in the way of medication that doesn't have some side effect unfortunately.

Candleshoe, why do I get the impression you were'nt too keen on Migranal????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to say too that I really don't like the side effects either but I haven't found the triptans do any good, and there's not a lot of alternatives. The other thing that's so annoying is the cost of all these wretched medications, it's never ending.

Thanks again for your input, really appreciate it, have a good day and keep well. Ruth

Ruth--migranal is an ergot derivative. It constricts blood vessels, and can raise both you blood pressure and your heart rate. Ergot is a migraine medicine that has been around a long time, and works well for some people, but does have it's risks. In your place, I would check my pulse several times in the first 2 hours after taking it and record the numbers. If you have the means, check your blood pressure too. This would go a long way toward telling you if it is likely to cause problems for you.

Ergot was my first real migraine medicine, but I took the tablets--they didn't have spray back in the stone ages. It usually worked, but I always puked my toenails up! Had to give it up due to high blood pressure.

For me, DHE might as well be arsenic-I become deathly ill from it, and it makes my head worse! And yes, when I was a child in the 60's and 70's my doctor tried the tablets back then. The more things change, the more they stay the same!UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Everyone,

Several times over the years I have tried DHE by IV and I swore the last time a doctor said that if I wanted there help I had to take it I was up and out of that er as fast as possible and I told him I would rather die than take that. I have also been prescribed migranal and gave it
a good try but it also gave me very wierd side effects and I would not try it again.

I have however spoke to others who have said it has helped, so once again we each have to find out for ourself. I just think that we have to be careful sometimes as some of these meds have horrible side effects etc. I sincerely thought I was going to die after trying it, for me never again. Bye ROxy.
