"Tomamax"
Thinking of calling my neurologist and giving topamax a try. I run my own business and don't have insurance on myself. Anyone know the price of this drug? How about any serious side effects?
Appreciate any info.

Thanks,

Kelly

Topomax can have serious side effects. Some experience extreme irritability and want to bite off the heads of anyone that comes near. Some experience a complete loss of libido. Many experience loss of appetite. Many experience nausea and whacko-ness in the bowels. Numbness, jitteriness, you-name-it and Topomax can bring it on.

But not for everyone. But for lots of folks.

Most find that the side effects last for a period of weeks and then disappear rapidly.

And most people find that IF you can make it through the period of side effects, that you will get better.

I was told that the therapeutic dosage for Topomax (maxamum allowed) was 400 mg a day. I found relief at 300 mg a day. I am now at 400 mg a day.

I was migraine free for about 5 weeks on Topomax. Then the migraines returned with a vengence. My side effects period lasted about 6 weeks as I recall ... and it was not fun - though I did lost about 30 pounds which was fun! (grin)

I took topamax for 2 years or so. You have to build up the dosage slowly, and there are many side effects which include nausea, dizziness, tingling in your hands and feet, just to name a few. This drug has helped me and several others on this panel...The side effects are a real pain, but for the most part they go away as you reach your dosage level, you just have to be patient.
As far as cost, this drug is pretty expensive if you don't have prescription drug covereage with your insurance. At the levels that I was taking it, if I had not had insurance, it would have cost me about $300-400 per month.
if you were like me and had tried every drug known to man as a preventative as well as all of the abortives and pain meds, you will probably want to give this one a try.
Good luck and hope you have a pain free day!!!

Hey Lisa,

Thanks for responding. I am curious, are you still taking topamax and what was the dosage that ran you $300 to $400 a month?

Thanks for your help,

Kelly

My dosage was between 300 to 400 mg a day. I had 100mg pills and also 25mg pills to use when I had to increase my dosage as you have to build up to the 300 to 400 mg over time. Also, when the side effects got too bad, sometimes my neuro had me fluctuate between 300 and 400 mg in 25 mg increments. I can only judge the price by looking at what the pharmacist provided me---a price for the prescription before my insurance paid, and then what my copay was...I think that was the way it was broken down on the receipt.
I have never had to pay out of pocket except for the copay.

Kelly,
From what I've found, cost can vary slightly from one pharmacy to another, and somewhat from one month to another. I just happen to have my pharmacy receipt from the last time I picked up my Topamax prescription. I'm lucky enough to have insurance to pay for it. Currently I take 100 mg daily; since the tablets I get are 25mg, that's 120 tablets per month. The total cost for the Topamax in January was $146.71 for 120/25mg tablets.
