"country or city"
Hi all,

Just doing a little poll. Where do you live, in the city or country? Have you lived in both and found a difference in the headaches/migraines?
I am thinking of moving to the country to see the difference, but it's a big move...(like how am I going to support myself?)
So what are your experiences?

I used to work in the bush of Northern Ontario every summer and would rarely get headaches. Now I work in an office in Toronto and have bad headaches... Hmmm!

I grew up in the country until five years ago when I moved to Vancouver. For me there has been a big difference in the frequency of migraines. I get alot more now, 2-3 per week, than I did in the country (3 per month). I knew it was going to be tuff though. I was leaving behind my supporters and my awesome doctor, the laid back lifestyle, clean air, clean water. Moving to the city was a culture shock for me.

Hi Everyone,

I can't really say anything about city living as I have lived on the farm since I was 10 and I didn't start my migraineing until my late teens. But I noticed a couple of times when I went to the city for workshops or meetings that I get severe migraines each time and I attributed it to the constant flickering of the florescent lights. May even have something to do with the polution.

I do think the farm adds less stressors than maybe city life, but in my case I don't think it would matter where we live my migraines are the same. lol. Bye Roxy.

I grew up in the country, moved to the city as an adult, and now once again I live in the suburbs.

I havent noticed that big a difference to be honest. True...going into the city now often does trigger a migraine for me....but I think thats from the drving and the smells on the highway. Also from stress, as I am usually going to the doctor or doing something else unpleasent when I take the drive to the city.

The change in migraines you all have felt maybe the change in lifestyle more than the location. City life usually moves a bit faster than country life and usually the types of jobs in the city are more stressful. That could be a big part of it.

Although....I have no doubt that the polution and noise found in the city makes things worse.

This post has been one big contradiction *lol*

I would think living in the city probably is worse. I live in a big city and wherever I go, there's some kind of noise (I saw a documentary on t.v. once and someone said this world is polluted with noise and I couldn't agree more). I keep horses about l5 minutes drive from here which are obviously in the country, and when I get out there I can totally unwind. That's not to say I don't still get them when I'm in the country, but I think city living can make them worse. That's my opinion anyway!. Ruth

I have lived in small rural or mountain towns since leaving Ft Worth TX in 1979. Although it makes sense to consider such things as air quality, you should probably consider some other factors that might be more controllable. When you moved to the city, you may have changed your eating habits, driving time, or sleeping time. Your office job may involve alot of computer time, or exposure to flourescent lights, or even chemicals in the air of the office building from carpet, cleaning solvents etc.

Moving is a big change, and if you have good reasons to do it then go for it. But if you are wanting to know the effect on your pain, you might want to make a trial run. The actual location may not be what is causing the problem.

I used to live in Alaska and moved to San Francisco. My migraines were MUCH WORSE in Alaska. I had to be hospitolized there. Can be treated as an out patient in San Francisco.

City life is infinitely superior to country living. The country is so very NOISY at all hours. Brooks babbling all the time and you can't turn them off! Cows mooing. Crickets chirping. Its a symphony of annoying sounds day and night!

And in the country you can't get lost. I mean the community is so small that everyone knows you and knows your business. You can't get away with anything. It's maddening and gets on your nerves. Enough to give you a headache - a bad headache.

No no no ... city life is the only life for a migrainer!

I live within the city limits and down the road about 1/2 mile starts the county. I don't live in a BIG city that you normally think of not a small one either. You can drive through the whole city in about 10 minutes. I have lived in the country when I lived in Arkansas and Ohio but I am a Kentucky girl and loving it. Didn't notice much difference in my migraines living elsewhere.
Wishing everyone painfree days and nights

My neurologist wanted to put me on an antiseizure med (Acetazolomide) to stop the hemiplegic migraines I have gotten all my life, but I resisted his efforts since that med has side effects that are similar to the attack symptoms. Instead, I figured out as many of my triggers as I could, radically changed my diet (away from cheese/soy/vegetarian to beef/lamb/low tyramine instead), and got the attacks down to one (or two) massive ones a year plus many smaller, more livable ones every month. That was good, but I wanted an even better outcome, so I talked to him about how light is such a strong trigger for me. He agreed when I said I should move to a cloudier place, like the Pacific Northwest.
So I did it! I moved from Southern California to Oregon. I much prefer living in the woods, because the quality of light is different. In LA, the bright sun is merciless. Here in Eugene, it is softer and more diffused. I can actually go outdoors without sunglasses on, which I could never do in CA. I can see the true green of the trees, instead of the brownish gray that my dark sunglasses used to cast over the bright world. I feel a lot better here. It's true that moving is a big change, but if you want to be well, it is important to listen to your inner wisdom and do what is right for you.

Okay, I have to say this, RICHARD how could you possibly say that!!!!

YOu have not lived until you have lived the good life of farm living, nothing could be better than that, not to mention healthier for you.

If I was a millionaire I would fly you over here this week and show you what it is like here in good old Alberta, of course I don't live in or near the city, but I live close to a small town where I can get everything I need (except specialists)LOL. BUt at times it is so peaceful, and beautiful (no pollution), I wish you could see it, I also wish you could take pictures of it, as you could do justice with your photos. If I knew how I would send you a picture to give you a glimpse.

Having said that I have lived in the city when I was young, and I had to go to the city for six weeks when I started at the pain clinic and I never felt at peace there, it was like never having any space or tranquility, its always moving, and noisey etc, it definately reminded me how lucky I am to walk out my door and watch the animals cows, deer, ducks, geese, even the porcupines and the skunks and birds intrigue me.

BUT I know to each his own, I do love the pictures you send and I love taking a holiday and stay in a city etc, but to live no way, I like in the summer we walk out and start a fire and pretty soon all the kids and at times a few neighbors come and we just talk about life etc, and sit around the fire until midnight its so beautiful watching the stars, the sky the northernlights etc. I couldn't miss it.

OH, bye the way I don't think either city life or farm life necessarily has a difference in migraines, at least for me there doesn't seem to be a difference. THey are bad no matter where I go. Bye ROxy.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-04-02 AT 12:08 PM (CMT)

Healthier, Roxy? Quieter, Roxy? Oh no, My Dear Roxy, oh no. With all those critters around? You end up stepping in it ... having to slaughter it, butcher it, pluck it, gut it, chop it up, milk it, inseminate it, birth it, castrate it ... oh I have been around farms enough to know it is nothing but work, work, work. Dawn to dusk. I would never have the energy to sit up to midnight to watch the stars!

And one thing East coasters (NYC) hate about San Francisco is that this city goes to sleep at a decent hour. We actually do roll up the sidewalks and quiet down for the night. So very civilized.

So give me milk in a bottle, meat in neatly wrapped packages, waves at the sea shore just off the concrete side walk, poultry neatly trimmed with no feet or heads in sight ... ahhh ... nothing to remind me of where my food comes from! That's the life I love!

LOL
