"oxycontin"
Does anyone find that their relief from narcotics wears off soon? I have been on oxycontin for about 8 mos. I find that the pain relief wears off soon after I increase my dose. I haven't been alowed to increase at my own dicretion (until the pain is gone). I feel that even though I take this that I have only partial relief.Any comments would be appreciated.

Hi Sally,

What dose of Oxycontin are you on and how often? Were you given any breakthru pain meds? Alot of your questions depend a great deal on the above info. As with any med, we build a tolerance over time, but many people feel that the Oxy doesn't last as long as it says it does. I did and felt MUCH better when I was on an every 8 hour schedule, but my wonder Doc refuses to change me back. I never did feel that it lasted 12 hours.

If you have any other questions, just let us know. Or if you prefer, you can alwats e-mail me, I really don't mind! I've been on the Oxy almost 4 years now, so perhaps I can be of help.

Take good gentle care,
Mary.

I have been on a very high dose of Oxy-C for almost 2 years ..I have had to have it raised many times due to the fact that it didn't last 12 hours...it seemed to wear off after 6 to 8 hours. Maybe you need to have it rasied or think about asking the doctor to have you take it 3 times a day. I liked to know how much you take and how many times aday. Talk with your doctor .. It's not fun being under medictaed.

Thanks for the replies, I'm on 40mg twice a day 7:30am and 1pm, I had to take it that way because I find it wears off too soon. My problem is(I have had a chronic headache for over 5 yrs) that every time my doctor doubles my dose I find that the relief wears off within a week or two, and my daily level of pain goes up and I need to wait 6 weeks to ask for more(he doesn't want to give me more).Does this happen to you?

I take oxycfontin, but am on a low dose right now. I take 20 morning and at night. I did speak with my doctor and we had put off raising it due to all this other mess that is going on. But next month we are going to raise it to 30 and 30.

I just didnt want to take more than I needed too. And with all these other problems I wanted to wait to see if the 20/20 would work. but 3 months of this dose, well it aint working enough.

but I feel it wears off at about 6-8 hours. But you know you cant tell those dang doctors anything. they know it all. but my gp is the one who is going to raise it. Not the neuro surgeon. He said he didnt want to have anything to do with my migraines, he would treat my pseudo tumor but not my migraines.

Dont hurt my feelings none, cause I cant stand the man. I do have break through meds though and I do take them when I need to. and with this other med for the pseudo tumor it just keeps my constantly in pain. So I figure I will have to detox when I am healed of the pseudo tumor. I try my damnist though not to take the break thrugh meds every day. And I have done pretty good.

The morphine I was given, I have only used 3 times now. And I am not going to use it again. I hate the way it makes me feel. I told my gp that too, but he said well patti it keeps you confotable, and I told him I didnt care, It scares me at how it makes me feel.

they said that would change after I had taken it for awhile, but I am not going to. I will just suffer till I cant suffer no more then I will consider it.

There have only been a hand full of drugs that actually scared me in taking them, and the morphine is one of them. I dont know my hysband and my family says I am nuts, but they aent the ones that has to have that awfull feeling after taking it.

again long winded as usuall. I havent slept but maybe 4 hrs the last two days and I tend to ramble when I am like that sorry.

wishing you all pain free days ahead, the hope to not give up, the strength and courage to lead you to that golden road to a wonderfull and compassionate doctor.

Hi Sally,

I posed your question this morning with my new Pain Doc as I was needing a faster working pain med. I am on Oxy C "ER" (Exteded Relif) 40mgs 2x a day with 20mgs as needed. I need it! I am also having to adjust the 1-20mgs to 40mgs. It just wasn't lasting long enough.

I got hit with some 10+ migraines this week. Bad enough to where I was swallowing pills dry (I can't take the triptans) and laying on the bathroom floor because the tile was cold. It was bad enough to where I thought I might be having an aneysm, because the pain was way worse than I have ever had before and I actually had swelling in my right temple. I'm still bruised from squeezing my head with my hands and squishing it on the tile. It turned out the OxyX ER weren't giving me immediate relief like the IR's will and the pain got out of control.

Anyway, he gave me Oxy IR (Immedite Relief) for breakthru and severe pain for immediate relief. Finally! And he explained that the life of the longer lasting pain meds are really not that long as you would expect. He said at 1 hour you got 30%, at 2 hours you got like 50-60%, then at 3 hours it was 70% of the pain relief. Then downhill from that. I guess it's better than short term pain meds like Lortabs that only work for an hour or two. My Neuro also said as much because I was going thru Lortabs like crazy trying to get some type of relief that was longer than an hour or two.

My husband take Morphine and he also has to have the IR and ER's. He takes the ER's a couple times a day for extended relief and the IR's in between for when the pain kicks in.

Hope this helps you.

Sally,
I think I know what you are talking about.

I started Methadone a little more than a month ago. The first week I was on it, I felt great. I wasn't tired, I wasn't in pain. It was wonderful to feel that way. I started going down hill though.

After a few weeks at that dose...my doctor doubled it (i was only taking 5mgs 2x daily) With the 10mgs I felt pretty good again, but this time only for a few days.

Now...I ache all over pretty much all damn day!! I am begining to think I am fighting a losing battle here!

Do I build up a tolerance THAT quickly?!?! If that is the case, I dont know if anything will help.

Maybe I am being under-medicated. But it seems to me like it is more of a case of getting used to the drug too quickly
