"hydrocodone vs oxycodone??"
Since i have started taking pain medication for my migraines i have only been prescribed hydrocodone. Vicodins and Lortabs.

They do not work as well as I suspect that they should.

I was wondering what the difference is between the "Hydro" and the "Oxy"

Could one work better than the other do you think?

Might the side effects be different between the two? Or maybe could I not have side effects from one but could from the other?
(did that last question make sense *lol*)

Is one more prescribed for headaches than the other?

I ask because I go back to the doc on Monday. I need some drastic changes in my pain treatment. I have been MISERIBLE lately!! Totally unable to function in even the most primitive way.

Like getting out of bed on my own or off of the couch. I can't even walk my dog. I am so stiff & in so much pain that I "control" him. (he broke free a few times. He is a strong puppy that does not behave well enough yet to let roam free)

I am thinking that maybe I should ask to be switched over to oxycodone. Maybe that will help with the insomnia or maybe I have built up a tolerance to the hydrocodones & a swtich might do me good.

One important question...Is the cost of the 2 the same? I get generic brands but it is relatively cheap. Maybe $20 or so for 60 pills. I couldn't afford a new medicine if it was consideribly more expensive.

Thanks~

This doesnt answer your question, but I use loretab. And I find that the generic does not work as well as the name brand.

Had a heck of a time getting the insurance company to give me name brand, but I do find they work better for some reason.

Hydro-codone is the shorter lasting narcotic, maybe 4-6 hours if you are lucky. It is Vicodin, Lortabs, etc.

Oxy-codone is supposed to be the longer lasting narcotic. It's supposed to last up to 12 hours, but I'm not so lucky. If I can get it to last 6 hours I am doing good. It is OxyCotin. I believe Percocet/Percodan is oxycodone.

Lynda

I also find that brand name work better than generic. THey are supposed to be the same, but I don't think they are. If I get generic its about $10 for any amoung. If I get brand name I can pay anywhere from $15-$30 copay, for any amount, all depending on if there is a generic available.

Actually Oxycodone is not really longer lasting than Hydrocodone unless it is time release like Oxycontin. It is just Oxycodone is stronger than Hydrocodone. So Percocet is NOT time released and not really longer acting just stronger.

It is also a CII narcotic vs a CIII for (hydro which is Vicodin, Lortab...) Some (most) are much less likely to prescribe Oxycodone for their patients especially for chronic pain but your experience may be different. That is just what I have learned.

I have tried all forms of Hydro and Oxy that there are, and all of them made me beyond sick to my stomach, where you finally throw up nothing, and THEN you throw up stuff again!!!

They might just work for you though, but if you have a sensitive or weak stomach, then they might not do so well. Maybe try to take one right before you eat something, or right after, because they are both pretty strong meds.

They did nothing for my head and made me beyond sick, so I can't take anything like that, even codeine. But you just might have better luck. Let us know if you do, I hope the one you will be trying helps you! Good luck!

I just noticed that you said you already take Hydrocodone, which is the slightly weaker of the two, so since you can handle taking the Hydro, then I would ask about Oxycodone, it just might be the thing to try. I also hope you feel better really soon, I am praying for you, whatever you end up doing. There has to be something out there that will work for you, I believe you will find it soon!

I always ask my doctor if it's okay to break the tablets of my pain meds into little pieces and take them a little at a time over maybe an hour or so with a little dry toast. I find that I am more able to keep the meds down that way. Of course you can't do that with all pain meds, and some it might be dangerous to break them up. There is nothing worse than tossing up everything you take to help yourself. You always wonder, well, now that I've thrown it all up, do I try again or what? I hope your able to find something that helps. Dray

Yes, Oxycodone is Percodan/Percocet but not time released like OxyCotin. It is the short acting one like Vicodin & Lortabs.

OxyCotin IR is the "I"nstant "R"elease, works in about a half hour and last a couple hours.

OxyCotin ER is the "E"xtented "R"elease and is supposed to last longer. I'm lucky to get a couple more hours out of it. I don't get 8-12 hours at all.

I get IR's for breakthru pain, but since my Er's are only 2x a day now at a higher dosage. I use alot of IR's to get between dosages. Along with alot of Tylenol and Advil.

You can't break up the OxyCotins. Too much meds at one time. That's what all the media hype is about these days.

You can break up the Lortabs and Vicodins. I have before to add a half pill for an extra pain med boost when things are bad.

As for the nausea, many years ago, when I first started taking hydrocodone, it caused alot of nausea. It "will" go away. I did add Dramaine, or whatever my anti-naseau pill that I was taking at the time, like Reglan. I also drank alot to dilute the pill in my stomach. I think alot of the hydrocodone pills have blue dye in it. I can't remember if it is brand or generic? But that seemed to make a difference on whether I was sick feeling or not. The blue ones bothered me more.

Lynda

P.S. I do have ulcer pain alot, and the doctor said that Tylenol can cause pain? even though it's supposed to be easier on the stomach than say like Advil. Maybe if ibuprophene doesn't bother you, you could try Vicoprophe. Works just as well and helps with inflammortory problems.

8. "RE: hydrocodone vs oxycodone??"
As you have been reading in these posts hydrocodone is the active ingredient in lortabs, lorcet, vicoden, vicoprophen, etc. It comes in 5mg. 7.5mg. 10 mg. depending on the product you are prescribed and is always combined with another product like tylenol or ibuprophen. It is a class III narcotic which means it can be called in to a pharmacy or refilled.

Oxycodone is the active ingredient in percocets and percodans (which contain 5 mg oxycodone plus tylenol or asprin) and other fast release varieties. It can be obtained without combined ingredients and comes in at least 5mg, 15mg, 30mg, pure form. It also comes in the slow release form known as Oxycontin 10mg, 20mg, 40mg, 80mg, and I think 160mg. Oxycodone in all forms is a Class II narcotic which requires an original prescription each time(in the US).

All varieties and forms have different side effect profiles depending on the primary product, strength, additives and person. There is really no way of telling unless you try and compare.

Vicodin and Lortabs have never really helped me too much, unless the h/a is just coming and there is no nausea involved yet.

They make me SO sick and to me they have the worst guaranteed REBOUND of anything I've taken.

10. "RE: hydrocodone vs oxycodone??"
Hi All

As I have stated before I have been through countless procedures and meds with no relief long term. I was finally told that all the doctors had to offer me was long term narctic therapy. I have been taking Oxycontin 12hr release for over a year( I haven't had to increase my dosage yet). I will tell you that it is not a preventive and for me it has not taken the migraines away. What it has done is give me a life. I don't live in the dark puking my guts up 4 or more days of the week as I did before starting the oxycontin. I don't live in doctors offices, the ER, and Urgent Cares. I was in the doctors office at least 2 days a week and sent to the Urgent Care or ER 2to 3 times a week before starting the Oxy. But if I don't take my medication its a matter of a couple days and the cycle starts again. The oxy masks the pain and I do not suffer as I did before. Noww I will tell you that I cannot take it on a empty stomach. And when I 1st started I had to take my nasuea med along with it (I take zofran for n/v) but in about 2 weeks the nasuea stopped and I no longer have that problem. I will give you some personal advice do not take more than the doctor has directed. Never chew, crush, break, or tamper with the time released oxy as it can be very dangerous. I work in a hospital and have seen people who have done that and it almost killed them. I don't want to take oxy for the rest of my life but if it is my only answer to having a life I will but I will not stop looking for another treatment in the hopes that at some point I can use the oxycontion for rescue pain. So as always there are pros and cons to every med we chose to take and each of us has to make a personal choice. Oh, at 1st oxy made to pretty sleepy so instead of taking it twice a day I took it at night only and after 3 to 4 weeks I started taking the morning dose and no longer had that side effect.<until I could take a morning and night time dose I had pain when my night time dose wore off until I could take my oxy>Best Wishes

Michele

11. "RE: hydrocodone vs oxycodone??"
Thanks for all of the information everyone.

I have had gitters and insomnia everytime I take the Hydorcodone for as long as I can remember. It can really cause a problem sometimes. Even though it does work for my migraines, one important thing for me is to SLEEP if I can get the pain down to a level where that is possible

Sometimes the lortabs will keep me from getting to sleep and then the migraine outlasts the power of the pill. They seem to only work for an hour to an hour and a half really. The the pain slowly starts to increase again.

Also I have taken the Hydro for about 3+ years and I am thinking that switching to a different type of pain medication may help me in general. I need to take 10-20 mgs of the Hydrocodone for a headache as a 1st dose. I'm thinking that with Oxycodone may be able to get away with taking less.

I can't WAIT til Monday to see the doctor. I just hope he is not discouraged by my lack of progress and is as eager to help me as he has been so far.

fingers crossed

I can relate to that...I have terrible insomnia! I currently am "supposed" to take Deseryl for it. The shorter term Sonata didn't work. (I just found out you can take 2 Sonatas at once or take 1 = 1/2 hour prior to sleep and put another one by your bed for when you wake up during the night..I might try that instead of the Deseryl) I would only sleep a couple hours. And then be up the remainder of the night. But I don't really like the Deseryl side effects.

While I do get sleep, even if I wake up I am able to go back to sleep, I am hung over in the mornings and I worry that I won't be able to get up during the night if the kids need me or are sick. I am supposed to take it to prevent from getting up at the wee hours of the morning and eventually having to use an extra dosage of the meds just to get me thru til 8am when the kids go to school and I am possibly able to have a short nap.

Also for a short time, when the OxyC kicks in after 2 hours!...I get a jump in energy. I can't take it close to bedtime. But at least I do get the house picked up And I have to take it again in the afternoon, so finally the kids are being fed again. They went along time eating takeout and chicken nuggets. And cooking is my speciality or it was once upon a time .

I can also relate to that too! I was on the hydrocodone for 4 years. At first I got more than an hour or so relief. But not anymore. I was lucky to get an hour or so from 2 pills! That is why I had to go to the longer lasting OxyC. But I have so much breakthru even with OxyC. I did argue with the Neuro for over a year to NOT be put on OxyC and be sent to the Pain Clinic.

I am taking a poll on OxyC vs. Methadone. I have a friend who take 4-10mg of Methadone and 4-10mgs of Lortab and 4 tabs of Soma, she doesn't even see a Pain Clinic anymore. It used to be a Pain Clinic/Internal Medicine...but now it's only Internal Medicine and they kept on some of their pain patients.

I guess I should feel "lucky" to be able to be on the OxyC while others can't even get a couple Lortabs a day. I didn't want to be on the OxyC at all. But sometimes I do feel resentful that she is able to get ALL she needs and more, while alot of YOU stuggle with low dosages of whatever pain meds we can get. <sigh> Sorry for the early morning pity party...guess getting up at 4am was not a good idea.

Oxycodone was the drug that Winona Ryder was arrested with when they caught her shoplifting. I noticed that they kept saying that she was had oxycodone in her possession, which is the same as used in oxycontin, so that means that she broke with popular use and didn't get the long-acting form, which is what most of the addicts have been using.

They kept saying Oxycodone and not always being specific as to which drug exactly. I had read it was Percocet. Addicts will use anything. The reason they usually go for Oxycontin if they can get it is because 1 Oxycontin = 16 Percocet (depending on dosage). So if they chew, crush, snort or shoot it they are getting a TON of oxycodone at once without all the tylenol.

Hi Lulubel

I was given a sleep aid as well. I forget what mine was called, but it is not one of the newer ones like Sonata. I tried it twice. I hated it. Not only did it take forever and a day to work, but I hated the side effects! It wouldn't kick in til late at night (no matter how early i took it it seemed) but each morning after I would sleep til noon and be groggy ALL day!

One of the reasons I went to see the pain doctor was because the pain kept me lazy and tired all the time.

I wanted energy not grogginess.

The methadone does give me a boost though, strange as that is. Everyone thinks i would be nodding off all the time, but that only happened the 1st day or 2. Know I dont even notice I am on anything at all.

That is good as far as side effects go, but the bad part is....I'm not getting pain relief either.

Pooh...I guess ya cant have it both ways.

And hello VickiG. Its been a while. I heard that Wynona (sp?) had some kind f drug on her. Glad to see them yet again trying to give the medicine we need a bad name. At least they made it clear what she was on.

I am having a debate with my husband....

Was Wyona Ryder ever able to produce a perscription for whatever it was she got caught with?

I thought she did, and was just carrying a few pills in her purse, like I USED to do instead of the whole durn bottle.

He says no, she wasn't able to produce bottle or RX.

Just wondering?

The attorney has said that she had a prescription for it, but it hasn't been proven yet. Probably she has to show it in court.
