"Vioxx Warning"
Hello everyone,

I saw most of this information at another site. I remember that some folks here have been scripted for Vioxx and also Celebrex. I hope I don't cause a panic, but this info is too important to keep my mouth shut.

A woman with arthritis was given Vioxx from her Doctor. She had 6-8 great weeks on it, she had not felt that good in years!! She was pleased as punch and really vouched for the Vioxx, telling all her friends and family.

One morning she didn't show up for a scheduled brunch with her neice. She was found at home, having suffered a major stroke. Her doctor attributed the stroke to the Vioox. It was found that the manufacturer was facing a lot of class action law suits. It seems that the makers had KNOWN that taking the Vioox gave everyone a high risk for stroke or heart attack. This had been found in ALL age groups and in people who had no history or risk factors for the above.

The poster said to check for Vioox lawsuits on the net, so I did. I used an MSN search engine and came up with 785 search results!!

My best advice and also my reason for posting this is so people do not panic and that they make arrangements to see their Doctors to discuss this information and possibly get their meds changed. Many of the search results also named Cellebrex as another culprit

Take good care folks,

Mary.

Mary

What information did you get on celbrex. Do you perhaps have the site address, so I can read up on it. I have been on celebrex for quite sometime. I have had a problem with my blood pressure in the past, but it has been really good the last couple years. I am not even taking any meds for the bp now.

Thanks for the info.

Mary,
Thanks for the info. I do know that Vioxx and Celebrex both has asprin in them, but didn't know of the dangers of the heart problems it could cause.

4. "Vioxx"
Thanx for the info. I have been taking it off-and-on for about a year. I'm not very comfortable taking it for so long, so don't usually take it. Part of the reason for my discomfort is that my liver function tests the last couple of times were slightly off and attributed to the vioxx. I've been told to continue it, but haven't been taking daily.

another dr. suggested that plain-old asprin may be a better option. It has been shown good for heart, alzehmers sp?, etc. I'm thinking of findin the coated ones and taking daily minumal doses to see if it helps with my plantar faciitis.

thanx
Catherine

Ugh, I take 25 to 50 mg of Vioxx every day! I had heard a few stories but I can't function without it.

On my last trip to the ER they thought I might have meningitis because of Vioxx. It has been linked to that too.

Oh Christa,
That is just plain horrible. I'm really glad to hear you didn't have menningitis(sp)
What did the ER staff say was wrong with you?
What type of symptoms did you have? If you are able to, do a search for Vioxx lawsuits. My jaw dropped when I did a search!!

It kind of makes you wonder how long they were aware of a problem. I'd like to do some "stuff"
that I can not mention here starting with the top cheese and working my way down fro there.

Take care folks,

Mary.

I've been following the stories on vioxx to see where it all ends up. It does look more and more like it is not as innocuous as they at first thought.I still think it may be worth it for alot of people with serious arthritis pain--you take some risks when your quality of life is about nil. Most of us here know that.

The problem in my opinion is when doctors treat it as a harmless one-size-fits-all pill for any kind of pain, and don't look at the risk/benefit ratio for the individual. My dr. gave it to me when I complained that the naproxen I was taking made my stomach hurt. I tried it, but the vioxx made my stomach hurt just as much and cost a whole lot more. Plus, I couldn't see that it did any more for my headaches than the naproxen--maybe not as much.

By the way, ibuprofen has been implicated in many of the same complications as vioxx. It can cause fluid retention and aggravate cardiovascular problems. For now, I'll stick with my naproxen. I know it has risks--mainly stomach and kidney. But for me it is worth it. It also has benefits, being an anticoagulant like aspirin it actually reduces stroke and heart attack risk.

By the way Kim, none of these drugs actually has aspirin in it. They, along with aspirin, are all in a large category of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and all have slightly different risks and benefits. The big deal with vioxx and celebrex is supposed to be that they only inhibit the prostaglandins that cause inflammation, and not the "good" ones that protect your stomach. Before they came around, I actually saw old people die from perforated ulcers caused by ibuprofen and aspirin. The idea of a "cox 2 inhibitor" is a great one, but obviously it still needs some tweaking.

9. "RE: Vioxx"
About three weeks ago, I woke up at 3 am with the absolute worst headache I have ever had (and that is saying a lot). My neck was really stiff and sore and my head was just pounding. I was vomiting so hard I could not keep ANY medication down. So my husband took me to the ER. They gave me a large dose of Demerol and Phenergan and waited about 25 minutes. I was still vomiting a lot and every time I did I felt like my head was going to blow off. After a half hour the pain did not subside at all and neither did the vomiting. They were really surprised and then 2 doctors came in to see me and started asking about Vioxx. Then they came in and took some blood and put in an IV and gave me Toradol and Visteral, still no relief from the pain. I waited another half hour and they gave me more Demerol and Phenergan. At that point I just wanted to go home so they let me. But I did not really feel any better.

I got home and was still vomiting like crazy and my head was killing me. So my husband called the doctor from the ER he told him to bring me back in for more tests and a CAT scan. All tests were negative so they gave me another large dose of Demerol and then gave me 20 Percodan to take home. My headache finally broke after taking the Percodan and a Zomig together.

It was the worst migraine I have ever had in my 34 years of suffering.

Then I got the bill (thank God for good insurance) the total bill for my ER adventure was...$4278.44!!!!

Kim--that's easy--there is a cross reaction as far as allergies go. People who are allergic to either aspirin or sulfa drugs can't take vioxx becuase it frequently provokes the same allergy. My mom has the same problem only her allergy is to sulfa.

I just about fell off my chair, when you said that sulfa is another for allergy. I am allergic to sulfa and I was on vioxx. It made me sick so I stopped taking it. But I am on celebrex does it have the same allergy with sulfa.

Wendy,
YES!
All Cox2 have a similar chemical make-up to sulpha and asprin, so Celebrex could induce the same type of alergic reaction for you as a sulpha med!

Why is it that I didn't feel a bit shocked when I saw your total ER bill. It must be nice to charge ANYTHING they want to and get away with it. Did you know that a person with insurance is only charged about 1/2 of that total? Then they (ER and company) have to "settle" for what they contracted for, maybe 1/4 less. Each service rendered is predetermined prior to contracting with any insurance comp. Starting an IV is billed at $85, an aspirin or Tylenol $2.50 - $5.00.

It's also nice to know that those who must pay for services (for lack of insurance) get charged the inflated rate to decrease the hospital's losses. Talk about discrimination!

Thanks for letting me get that out of my system, I feel much better.

Take good care,

Mary.

Usually when I get the bills I always look at the adjustments that the insurance company makes. This time I was shocked to see that a lot of services, like my CAT scan were paid at 100% I could not believe that. When I had my MRI they only paid about half of the total billed. But my CAT scan they paid all $800.

I know what you mean about the plight of the un or underinsured. It is a crime really. My poor Mom is 66 and she still works only because she is afraid to lose good medical coverage. Ugggh, enough to give me another migraine.

Christa--what you went through was bad, but you are so fortunate. Last fall my son's roomate's stepdad went to the hospital with those symptoms. His financial situation was different. So was his level of knowledge. They decided to treat him "conservatively." He died 2 days later of encephalitis. He was 34, and the only "Dad" Jamie had ever known. I didn't even know him and it made me cry!
