"Hair Loss"
I posted earlier about starting depakote tomorrow. Well I did a search on the med and for the most part the results were good except for the obvious liver damage - but honestly- call me VAIN but I would rather have a cluster than lose my hair. I'm so afraid of new meds. Of course today is a good day so I think I'm out of the woods but I'll get desperate again and probably start the new med when that time comes.

When I was on Depakote my normally very thick full hair was awful. I looked like a chemo patient. Same thing happened to my friend. Only I got lucky and mine went back to normal after I quit, hers did not.

Sorry I don't have more encouraging news.

That didn't happen to me but I wasn't on it any longer than 3 months.

I have a thick head of hair, and I still couldn't make myself take depakote. It's awful to have to take meds that feel like poison in some ways, a horrible choice to have to make. SOme days I think I should go out and get the damn prescription filled, that it can't be worse than this. Other days are better.
Not everyone loses tons of hair apparently - some lose less.
Good luck with you decision. If this is incomprehensible, it's because this is a bad day.

There are vitamin supplements that can maybe help, ask your doctor or pharmacist about them.

I had thick and luxurious curly hair before depokote which I took for 18 months. Now you can see from my picture that I don't have a hair on my head!

Wait a minute ... neither do my brothers or Dad and they never took Depakote ... go figure!

Hang In There!

I do understand well your concern.
I was also told by my neurologist that Depakote is one of the best migraine preventtives, but when I asked about side effects and was told about possible hair loss, I just would not risk it.

My hair is fine, flywaway kind and I really could not face risking loosing any more of it...I know this would be very hard for me to bear...What else woould migraine would rob me of next!!!

So, I asked for alternative and he suggested Neurontin which I have been now taking since last October. I must say that although it does make me tired and I need lots of sleep with it, otherwise I have not notice any other problems.

And the best part of it is that I am now having long painfree periods which after many, many years of constant pain is wonderfull experience!.

It took me a while to get a dosage right and the full benefit did not kick in until I was on 1500, then 1800mg daily, but I have some of my life back at last.

So, ask your doctor if he could suggest something else rather then Depakote for you to try first.
I hope this helps

Depakote has been the ONLY med that ever stopped my migraines for a period of time (@ 18 mos) and I had a nice headache free period of time (I've had migraines since I was 18 - am now 46) - I quit the depakote to become pregnant (YOU CANNOT BE PREGNANT ON DEPAKOTE!!! terrible birth defects)after my pregnancy - I went back on depakote and it did not work at all - not at all - my dr. increased the doseage until my hands shook like a parkinsons pt (another great side effect) and my hair fell out. In the end, my beautiful wavy (looked like a perm) hair is now short and a straight as a stick....I don't know if the 18 months of fairly pain free time was worth it or not....

I was losing hair when I took Depakote, and my doctor told me to take Centrum (or Centrum Silver). That worked for me.
