"Any luck with muscle relaxers?"
Has anyone had luck with muscle relaxers as a preventative? I took myself off my Depokote and think my neurologist will probably be mad.

I could not stand the feeling anymore. I felt like jello, was tired all the time, and had trouble with my speak. It drove me nuts and I could get nothing done.

I thought maybe I'd call later this week and let him know what I did and why and ask about possibly trying a muscle relaxer for preventative.

Hi Gina, If Depakote is making you miserable, then you are justified in going off of it. Muscle relaxers can make you groggy, too.

What other preventative medication have you tried? There are beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, anti-depressants and many more.

Good luck in your search...we all know what you are up against.

Hi Gina,
I have to agree with Leslie about the Depakote. There are a slew of categories as she stated, calcium channel blockers, antidepressants, the list is almost endless!!

My Doctor started me on Zanaflex, which is a muscle relaxer, in addition to Oxycontin. It seems that the Oxy was causing my neck/shoulder muscles to tighten up like 2 fists. OUCH! It has helped me, but I would not consider it to be in the preventative category. Perhaps I misunderstood your question?

Take good care,

Mary.

3. "RE: Muscle Relaxants bad news for me!"
I have TMJ ( TMD) and I was in a car accident which left me a bad neck and shoulders. I was given muscle relaxants to help with the pain. At first I loved them! I took 1/4 a pill and I felt very nice and l-o-o-s-e! They also helped me fall asleep. They were great... until, I developed a physical tolerance to them.

I started with 1/4 but then 1/4 didnt work anymore so I needed 1/2 then 1 then 2 then 3 and then the doctor said NO MORE for me!

I didnt experience horrifying withdrawl like I did with Xanax. The relief I got was short lived because I became physically tolerant to the drug and my doctor wouldnt keep up'ing my dose. I still remember the relief I got from them but it was short lived.. kinda like a tease. I wished I never would have taken them.

If you have a bad neck and shoulders - I would suggest chiropractor, orthopedic pillow, massage therapy, physical therapy, stretching exercises, ergonomics, and biofeedback. Those things have helped me. Muscle tension is a big trigger for me!

4. "Muscle relaxants"
Hi Gina,

After years of neck tension, phisio, massage therapy, accupunture, etc. without major relief... my dr. discovered that I had moderate disk degeneration and put me on flexril. It initailly helped tremendously with the tension and migraine. I've also needed to up the dose from 1/2 per day and have been on 1-2/day lately.

I really notice when I don't take them, and think overall it is helping me, but probably more because I have fibro... The combo of amitriptaline and flexril has done wonders for that. It has also helped tremendously with the migraines, but I think it was more the amitriptaline that helped the most.

Both of these types of meds will cause drowsyness, and I needed to started each one seperately and work the dose up for 1/4 or 1/2 per day upto 2/day of each. I now feel very little drowsyness from them.

5. "RE: Muscle relaxants"
I don't know about muscle relaxers as a preventative, as stated by others tolerance can rise quickly with them.
Anyone think more so than with narcotics? It seems to me that I have read many comments about the short lasting effects of muscle relaxers. Hummmm?

I was going to start a thread about this, but it applies here as well

Yesterday I was getting a DOZY of a migraine. I woke with a headache, it seemed to be tension related. I was very stiff and had a very stressful morning

By afternoon the 'burning' started and it turned the corner into migraine territory. I was crying thinking i was bound to lose the rest of the day & wind up throwing up and screaming again

I said screw it..took 1 1/2 percocets, an ibuprohen and a soma. I figured maybe the soma would help since the trigger was tension.

One hour later there was NO sign of a migraine.
It was really a miracle for me!!!
I think there may be something to a muscle relaxer as part of an arsenal to escape the migraine

But as a prevent....I question it

My husband had some "soma" once for his back and I decided to take one at night to get rid of the beginning of a migraine. It helped but it left me groggy and it seems I actually get headaches from medicene that makes me too groggy.
Does this make any sense to anyone?

I am on Skelaxin, 2 400mg pills, twice a day for stress or tension headaches. I take them if I feel a need for them, I dont take them if I dont. I thought they would help me for the "BIG" ones, but they dont. Oh well....

9. "RE: Muscle relaxants"
If I took a percodan and a soma - I would be feeling good too! Those drugs gave me great relief !! I had Flexeril too and it gave me good relief for a short while. I also had Skelaxin but it was totally useless - no relief with Skelaxin at all, might as well take an M&M.

The problem for me is I have chronic pain, constant 24 / 7 - 365 pain so I had to take those drugs all day every day.

If you can save them for that once a month migraine, it might be helpful for you but if you have constant pain where you need them every day, I think that is where the physical tolerance sets in. I developed a tolerance to Percodan and Vicoden too. At first one pill was enough but then I needed more and more to get the same relief. I would take 3 or so at once! That's why my doctor wont give me more narcotics or muscle relaxants.

I am sure you have all read my Xanax posts before and how I had horrible dependency and withdrawl - I would NEVER EVER NEVER want a Xanax again. The tortuous withdrawl isnt worth the short term relief. The dependency and withdrawl from Xanax was a hellish nightmare, an incredibly horrifying experience - I always tell people to stay far far away from Xanax if they ask my opinion.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-05-02 AT 02:38 PM (CMT)

I don't know how long you were on the Depakote - it takes a couple of months to adjust to the side effects.
Lots of people seem to get over the worst of them to a certain extent, enough so that it's bearable to be on it.
I just say that because if you've been on it less than an couple of months, and later on you've been through a bunch of other preventatives without finding much relief, you might go back to Depakote and try it for a longer time.
You probably already know all of this - but just in case...
And I don't think that docs go for muscle relaxants as a preventative. It's not in anything that I've read at least.
If your muscles are causing your migs, it could be better to get physical therapy to treat the cause as opposed to just treating the symptoms.
Cheers. E

i use valium but have to be very careful how often i take it because of obvious dependancy problems-it can sometimes work very well.

the other thing that can help that i guess is related that i find helps is rubbing ralgex/deep heat-don't know if you have the same brand names in the US over my forehead and down my neck and shoulders-it burns and kind of helps a little bit!

I have been taking 1 Soma at bed time on and off for 9 months. It helps a lot. I usually don't take it for about one week every 3-4 weeks to keep the effect consistant. I used to get up in the morning and have to take a zomig before I even went to the bathroom. I don't have to do that with the help of the Soma.
