"first timer"
Hi Everyone,

I have been reading this forum on and off for about 5 or so years I think. Finally have a question for you all. I am a 41 year old female who has suffered with migs my whole life but very bad in the last 10 years. About three weeks of every month. Hormonal migs. I have been seeing a neurologist who specializes in migs for about 8 years. I have been on everything known to mankind
Never found a preventive that worked. Maxalt and demerol are my only relief. One year ago I had a car accident and totalled my vechile. My only injury was severe whiplash. You guessed it my migs have been every day since. I am now getting nerve blocks in my neck with some short relief. Also I have been on Lupron for 5 months now and am getting relief for about 2 weeks a month. It is fantastic. Now here is the Question... My next step seems to be a complete hysterectomy with ovaries to put me into permanant menapause. Has anyone done this and if so how did it work and were you on hrt after or just estrogen and did that make your migs return? Any info would be greatly appreciated, I am very confused at this point.
Thank you for all the support over the years even though you never knew I was there.
Cindy

Welcome to the group

My worst mig's are menstrual therefore I have inquired about a hysterectomy. My doctor told me she wouldn't recommend it because it's a gamble. Either it would help, help somewhat or make my mig's worse. It's a 50/50 toss that I was not willing to take. That's just my personal opinion.

I have had migranes for a long time and had a hysterectomy done (it was done for several different reasons). I was hoping my migranes would also get better. If anything they have gotten worse.

I take hormone replacement and have had trouble with that.

If I had to do it over again, I would not do it.

Also, as far as the hormonal migranes go, what's really strange is that I still get a really severe migrane every month at the same time I used to get my hormonal migranes. I had told my neurologist about this and she said just because they do a hysterectomy, that doesn't mean that they remove whatever it is in your brain that regulates those cycles. She said she has heard of that before (still getting the migrane at the same time as I used to get the hormonal migrane).

My gynocologist said absolutely do not expect a hysterectomy to stop your migraines. Even if the ovaries are removed, it does not mean the migraines will stop.

His advice is have a hysterectomy only if you have problems with your pelvic organs.

I was given the same advice: do NOT get the surgery as a means to cure migraines. it helps some people, but it makes it worse for most.
