"Seraquel??"
Has anyone taken Seraquel as a preventative?? My neuro just prescibed them for me yesterday. He said it was a "new" drug (I don't know if he means new, or just new for treating migraines). Anyway, it's an "anti-psychotic" drug that is also used for treating schizophrenia patients.

Some of the side effects I read about seem kind of nasty - but my doc seemed to think I would tolerate this drug fairly well. Does anyone have any experience with it??

Thanks,

Jeri

What are some of the side affects? Maybe I will mention it to my neuro. I hope it helps you.

The most common side effects seem pretty much standard with all meds: constipation, dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, and the dreaded weight gain. It's the uncommon side effects that seem nasty: severe weakness, fainting spells, seizures, sexual difficulties. But, I'm sure that those are more common in higher doses. I'm only going to be taking 100 mg after a gradually work my way to it (right now I'm taking 25 mg). My dr said that patients that take it for mental problems take around 400 mg. Another side effect for drugs in the same class (but it hasn't been noticed in this one) is the inability to regulate body temperature. That's a big one for me because I run about 4 or 5 days per week. I've already told my doc that I don't want to take anymore meds that interfere with my ability to exercise!!

I do have to say that I've taken the Seroquel twice now - they told me to take it before bedtime because it will make me sleepy. I've had 2 of the best nights' sleep I've had in months, maybe years!! I don't seem to have any side effects yet - except maybe drowsiness, but I don't feel drugged the next day. I haven't had a migraine either. I had a plain old headache yesterday, but I think that was due to the heat - the heat index here was 110!!

The dr. did say that this drug didn't seem to cause weight gain like other drugs in the same class. That's why he wanted to try me on this one. I gained 15 lbs on Atenolol and I was miserable. I still haven't lost the weight yet. So, we are going to monitor my weight with this one and see how I do.

That's what I was afraid of, weight gain. Ihave tried Depakote, and now I'm on Neurontin. So far so good. But I have 35 pounds that I'm still carrying around and its the pits. That's the first thing I ask about when trying new drugs, does it make you gain weight. All the anti depressents put weight on too. I wonder about the body temperature thing. That seems a little scary. I tend to sweat profusely on these meds and my family freezes in the winter, lol. I die in the summer. Keep me posted as to your results, it will be interesting. I tend to do a little better on anti seizure drugs than the depressents. Thanks for the information and have a great day! Its almost Friday! Love Sunshine.

Hi there jwharbau ...

I take Seroquel 100 mg. p.r.n. (as needed) to control the symptoms of my manic episodes. Initially, when my psych-dr. started me on Seroquel, I was hestitant to take that as he had informed me that it is an anti-psychotic drug for the treatment of psychosis and schizophrenia.. On the contrary, I am neither psychotic nor schizophrenic...I am manic depressive. (bipolar disorder).

He indicated that in as much as we take Aspirin for the relief and treatment of fever and various aches and pains, so is Seroquel used for treating the symptoms of psychosis and schizophrenia, including but not limited to hallucinations, delusions and confusion.

Weight gain and drowsiness are but 2 side effects of Seroquel as I did put on 10 lbs. or so when I was on Seroquel b.i.d. I was drowsy and yawning during the day and insomniac at night.

It had been my increasing misery and obsessed concern for my weight gain, the gradual decreased and controlled symptoms of my mania that I was tapered off Seroquel to be taken on as needed basis. Since then, my weight had returned to normal.

I am unaware that Seroquel is prescribed as a preventive medication for the treatment of onset of migraines. I will be seeing my psych-dr. come this Friday and I will ask him about this. Personally, Seroquel did not prevent the onset of my migraines nor did it relieve its severity.

So, how are you doing on Seroquel? If that works for you, perhaps, just perhaps, that might be a breakthrough in migraines prevention and indeed, many migranuers will certainly benefit from it. Do keep us posted.

Take care and Cheerio!

Molly

Well as it turns out, the Seroquel is a big bust. I'v offically stopped taking it today. I started the first dose 8 days ago - I took it at night right before bed. Ever single morning dince then, I have woken up with a headache. They were mild but were gradually getting worse each morning. This morning I woke up with a full blown 10 - which is exactly what we are trying to prevent. So I called my neuro's office and left a message for them to call me back. I don't even want to taper off this drug - I want to stop cold turkey. I have dreaded going to bed every night because I knew I'd wake up the next morning with a headache!! I don't know what we are going to try next. I'd almost rather take my chances just taking no other preventatives than my Effexor. So far Seroquel had no other side effects - but I cannot stand waking up with a headache!! Without preventatives, I only wake up with a migraine about once every 6 - 8 weeks. Having it happen daily is pure torture!!!
