"Low Blood Pressure"
How many of you have low blood pressure, or have had low blood pressure as a youngster? My wife has had low blood pressure most of her life until recently. I just wonder if this might be a shared trait among Migraine suffers...

Willard, God love you. I am just amazed at your dedication to your wife You are a wonderful man.

I have had low blood pressure all of my life also, but have only had migraines 7 years. My blood pressure only goes up if I am in extreme pain, otherwise it is normal or below.

Every Neurologist I have seen has had me on blood pressure medication because it is like a common practice, you have migraines you get blood pressure medication.

Well, I finally put a stop to that this year and I must say I have a lot more energy, no change in my migraine status, but at least I don't lay around in bed all day, everyday.

I would have to think that blood pressure as an effect is by individual, some of us are effected by migraine and some not.

My opinion on "low blood pressure" is that most women are told that they have it. Why? Because the 120/80 "norm" is based on a man. I measure bp on most of my patients and have found that most women - are about 90/60 to 100/70.....not really an issue of "low" if its everyone!

Anyhow, I will get off of the soapbox now.

Yes, I have low blood pressure and yes I do believe it is related. People with low blood pressure are also connected with hypoglycemia and chronic fatigue.

Somehow, I think way underneath, these are all related.

Have a good one!

I also have very low BP. To make matters worse, I'm on BP lowering medication to help the migraines.

Needless to say, what little energy I had left is now gone!

God bless you for helping your wife so much.

Yes, I have low blood pressure and orthostatic hypotension, where the bp drops upon standing. Some doctors I have seen did think that there was a connection between low bp and migraines. I took something to raise it for a while and it actually helped a good deal, but eating lots of salt does the same thing. I hope this helps. Pain free days to all.

Oh good! I'm glad someone asked this question!

I believe that i have a bit below normal blood pressure. Everytime i get it checked though, the drs say i am all right

What is considered low blood pressure

Last week at my dr visit mine was 100/52

52 is the lowest I have seen that number go, but my top number has been in the 90's before

Anyone think this is below normal? I also have a problem where I almost pass out when i stand. It is a regular occurance

Sorry for asking questions on someone elses thread

I have also had low blood pressure most of my life as well as low blood sugar. I have had difficulty, from both, with getting light headed and almost passing out when I stand sometimes.
The doctors mostly just said to eat more sugar or salt depending on which problem I was having.

It certainly sounds like these could be a trigger.

I have a theory on that--mind you it is just my theory.Vascular tone, which causes BP to go up or down, is neurally regulated. The old understanding of migraine was the it too was caused by some problem with vascular tone, like spasms or "cramps" of the blood vessels.

Now that theory of migraine causality has been thrown out, but most still think that blood vessel reactivity fits into the migraine process somewhere.

So, if your nervous system isn't regulating BP effectively--like the problem with positional hypotension, ( when your BP drops suddenly on standing), then maybe you might also be more prone to the vascular reaction that is part of the migraine process.

My BP an low all my young years. As a young adult, it was so low that I got some enjoyment out of seeing the look on a nurse's face as she took it, then went to get someone else to double check. 60/40 was a "walking around" BP for me back then. In my 30's it normalized, and in my 40's began to be above normal.

My Mom's did exactly the same thing, and she now has intractable hypertension. I think if you look at that trend over a lifetime, it probably means that the regulatory mechanism doesn't work right.

So yes, I do think that maybe a BP problem and a migraine predisposition might go together.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-02 AT 11:08 AM (CMT)

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-02 AT 11:07 AM (CMT)

this is a really interesting discussion, i have often thought that my low blood pressure and migraines might somehow be interconnected.

my postural hypotension had got so bad over the summer with the hot weather that i was continually practically fainting all the time unless i stood up with my head between my knees or grabbed hold of something.so i went to the doctors. he said that in france they give you medication to increase your blood pressure but they didn't bother in the uk!!

so should we be trying to increase our blood pressure? he said that eating salt wouldn't really help-i'm not sure why not. i eat very little salt in my diet.

Sorry to bother you all again..but what numbers would indicate low blood pressure?

I have checked my charts... my top number is usually between 80-100. My bottom number has been as low as 52 and stays below 70 at all times

just wondering if this is why i am low energy

Johna--that is probably the low end of normal for a woman your age. Some of your meds may contribute to that. Opiates will drop your BP. So will beta blockers. calcium channel blockers, and ACE inhibitors. Some of the other meds have that effect in some people.

As far as low energy levels--well, maybe, but maybe not. If that is your normal BP, then your body has probably adjusted to it.

Decreased energy can be caused by so many different things, I think it is probably the hardest symptoms of all to pin down a reason for.even just being in pin all the time saps your energy.

But I don't think you need to worry about your BP. Usually chronic low BP doesn't cause problems. It is just when it has precipitous drops, so that the person gets dizzy or blacks out that you have to worry.

Thanks Norma!
The drs never said anything about it being low, but my last reading got me a little worried. You are likely right in that it is normal, or i imagine they would have said something

Funny thing is I had gotten lost on the way to the office and was VERY stressed *lol* So when i got there i was all worked up and thought it would very high. But it was lower than usual
*lol*

Mine is very low. After anyone takes my BP they always ask if I feel like I'm going to faint. Then they ask if I could get up and walk around for a bit. Go figure?! I feel normal....energy wise I mean! But then again, that's just "my" normal!

You seem to come up with a lot of ideas that are common threads for us migrainers! Good thinkging! I too, have always been on the lower en od the scale. The funny thing about mine is that the Dr's expect my BP to be higher when I'm having my migraine, but it's just the opposite. It drops lower. I don't understand that one an neither do they. I'm just odd. Thanks for all your interest and your great questions!! TS

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to add I also suffer from low blood pressure, and have most of my life. I along with a few of my doctors have wondered if there is any connection as my migraines are daily and very severe. To date there is not any evidence to say the two are related at least in my case, but I still think it is something to be looked at.

Take care and keep me postd, love Roxy.

I also have low blood pressure and to make matters worse my neurologist has me on Verapamil which can lower your blood pressure. The Verapamil is one of my preventives. I've been passing out lately maybe my blood pressure is very low? Wendy R. Please give my best to your wife- I hope she's feeling well)
