"Medication during pregnancy"
I know I've askd this before, but I cannot remember the responses. That darned short term memory!! My husband & I are going to try to get pregnant soon and while I wouldn't take medicine unless I absolutely HAD to, I know there is something out there that you CAN take while pregnant? Does anyone know what it is? There was a poster a year or so ago that told of this medicine, but again, I cannot remember her name. I am on a weaning program for my current medicines, but want to be prepared to ask my doctor what he can give me, and at the same time want to seem somewhat educated when I go in there since they don't want you to take ANYTHING (of course)during pregnancy. Like I said, it would only be an emergency situation for me to subject a baby to meds prior to birth. Help if you can.

Thank you,

Molly

Hi Molly!
Hope I can be of some help here... When I was pregnant, I stopped my preventative (Neurontin). But I do know that studies were going on to see whether that could be safe in pregnancy. Another thing, I was prescribed Prozac (for depression and/or the migraines) when I was pregnant and told that if I wanted to I could take it, but I decided not to.

You are going to find that, as with EVERYTHING in pregnancy, things either get better or worse. Well, migraines, for me, got worse. Luckily, it is safe to take Tylenol #3 and Fioricet and remarkably safe to get a Demerol injection after the first 4 months or so. But, sometimes that was too much for me, so I ended up going on a high blood pressure medication. It wasn't a miracle pill, but I was also into my 3rd tri-mester when I started it, so I probably just waited too long.

The only thing I can tell you is that you should talk things over very thoroughly with your dr, because there are so many more options now than there used to be. Just do what is comfy for you! Good luck with everything! I hope I could help, even if it was a little bit!!

When I was training to be a massage therapist I worked in the high risk pregancy ward at a local hospital doing treatments. I was surprised to see how many of the women were given T3's for pain. The Dr's had "no problem" with it. I find it rather interesting as codiene IS a narcotic. So, if you had a really bad migraine you could look at taking that - I suppose. I don't think I would take anything really. You could look into acupuncture. I have had it done 2 times when I was about to get a migraine and it worked really well. Although, I felt all "high" and silly afterwards. You could also find a naturopathic physician in your area who could make some suggestions.?

Cheers,
Jen

When I was pregnant I was one of the minority that had migraines get worse. I had to get IV's due to dehydration from migraines. I know you can't take the abortives like the Ergotamines and Tryptans. I was using Cafergot and stopped it, they can cause miscarriages. I was horribly sick, at the ER 2-3 times a week the first trimester. The high risk OB I had ok'd Demerol and Phenerga-IM. I tried to do with just the Phenergan but usually needed the demerol. I had an MRI also to rule out VMF. The OB and Neuro got together and decided to give me Phenergan tablets for home. They prefer not to give narcotics during pregnancy but have to weigh the benefits/risks. When I got a shot I would be able to eat again for about 24-36 hours before the next migraine hit.It was a benefit. After about 4 months I was able to use just the Phenergan and didn't have another migraine til after birth.I hope this helps.Good luck!!!!!!!!

Just a little encouragement for you....I had one slight headache during my first pregnancy. I had no migraines during the 2 times I was pregnant.

Maybe this will be a migraine free time for you although I do understand your apprehension. It is awful to feel you cannot take anything for pain.

Maybe someone else will pipe in with a suggestion.

Good luck,
Łeslie

I too am trying to get pregnant and have migraines 4 to 6 times a week.

I was on topamax and Keppra and had to be taken off those, of course. Currently I am not taking any preventatives, and am using T3s for smaller pain relief and Lortabs for more concentrated pain relief.

When I was trying to get pregnant with my first child, my neuro put me on prozac because he said it was safe to take during the first 6 months of pregnancy. I stayed on the prozac until I got pregnant, and I chose to stop taking it.

Believe it or not, I only had two small headaches during my whole pregnancy. My neuro at the time was a personal friend, so I believed everything that he said, and he said that your migraines usually either get alot worse during pregnancy or they get alot better. He also said that pregnant women with migraines can still be treated for pain, contrary to popular belief.

Since my migraines got so much better, I guess I didn't have many decisions to make. I was able to complete my pregnancy without taking any drugs except tylenol.

I really feel for those women who continue to have terrible pain during their pregnancies. My neuro also said that oftentimes it is just as bad for the baby for the mother to be in that much pain, so the pain should be treated so as not to harm the unborn child.

Hope this helps.

Lisa

PS Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

6. "RE: Medication during pregnancy"
My story should give you a little hope. I had a migraine about every 10 days for my entire first pregnancy. I received a shot of 20nubaine, 50 vistaril everytime. I cried every shot because I thought I was hurting my baby, but I was so sick and my doctor said these shots were OK. My blood pressure gets very high with a headache so that is another reason to get the shot. I had a lot of bad experiences from(MOSTLY NURSES) in the ER. I quickly realized not telling them I was pregnant made it a lot less hassle. I did not show for six months. Of course I would not recommend this to you I was just telling you how desperate I was! The ER staff does not want to give a pregnant woman anything for fear of being sued. By not telling them, they just thought it was my normal migraine, which it was. Anyway the nurses were so mean to me the first couple of times I just quit telling them in the ER. My GP doctor was aware of this and he said he understood. Anyway my pregnancy was completely normal.

By my second pregnancy we had moved to a new state and my new GP put me on Stadol nosespray and I took that throughout. During both pregnancies I used phenergen.

The only thing I can say is that the guilt and fear for nine months that you could be harming your baby is unbelievable. I was blessed with healthy babies and I thank God. I think you have to make a personal choice, but know that you also have to do what is best for the Mom or the pregnancy could really be damaged. Please email me at mobesto@aol.com if I could answer any more questions. My kids are now 3 & 5 and REALLY give me migraines now!

I had no idea I was pregnant until my 4th month, so I've continued to take Fiorinal w/Codeine for my migraines, and stopped cold turkey after a blood test revealed the pregnancy.
My OB told absolutely nothing is allowed except two reg tylenols daily, but please she had no clue about migraines.
My neuro give me a prescription for plain codeine to take with extra s tylenol, and to go to ER for shot of Demerol if needed.
But my migraines lessened as pregnancy progressed.

Hope that helps Risa

8. "RE: Medication during pregnancy"
Hi, my name is Kim. I just found out I was pregnant last Friday night. I confirmed it with the DR. on Monday. I did not know I was pregnant and have been taking pretty much anything and everything to knock out these headaches.

Thank God, nothing I took was harmful to the baby. However, I have been taken off everything but Fiorcet with Codeine and Phenergren. Which I am trying to avoid taking, but there are days when I just can't take it. I was on Prozac and Anaprox. The Prozac is okay, but I just stopped cold turkey, which may be why I've had a headache everyday since last week. The Anaprox I can't have. It figures, its the only thing that really works for me and doesn't knock me out!!!

So anyway, yep, you have to watch out for medications while you're pregnant. I'm almost 3 months and had no clue. I had a head MRI last month. Which I cried over until the Dr. told me it was okay. I'm still worried, but I'm getting better.

God Bless and good luck!!! And beware the unexpected, it can really catch you off guard!!
