"Odors"
Quick question: do any of you experience any brief, odd odors when you migraine? I cannot describe very well as it is a fleeting sensation but here goes. It is an acrid, sharp, intense smell almost like a strong cheese. It happens for a just a split second and kind of hurts and then in the next breath it's gone.

Hi Leslie!

I think we've discussed this in the past as a sort of aura. I know that I have phantom odors of tuna, popcorn, cat urine, and a few others I can't remember right now.

No one has ever believed me before here, so rest assured you are not the only one!!!

Take care,
jodi

I haven't experienced that, but I have heard of that before. Too bad the smell couldn't be something better than stinky cheese!!

The odor thing I get is during a migraine, not before. Calvin Klein's Eternity perfume is an instant migraine for me, though.

Send your hubby over here. A cheesesteak sounds good!

Yep,yep, yep, and the stinky socks, parmesean cheese smell is exactly it. I recently went through that last week. I am crazy and I don't care.

The smell I have had today is dog doo! Noone but me smells it. So I am looking for all signs of mig. I can, to catch ahead of time. Bad part is I keep picking up my poor dogs and smelling them and putting them down.

They think they are getting held and loved. They may not smell like dog poo, but they don't smell good either.

Most everything changes in smell to me. Remember the movie Laberynth? Smell bad!! Thats been me all afternoon. Like you it comes and goes.

Not much I can do about it. But if any cooking goes on, I go in my room and place something under my door so the odor doesn't come through. Don't know what else I can tell you. God bless you. Terry

I'm not sure I have the smell aura, but I get a taste that isn't very pleasant! I keep brushing and rinsing and it doesn't go away. I hate it! I may have the smells also, just haven't put it together. I'm always smelling things the rest of the family doesn't smell. Hope your wrong and you don't get the pain!! TS

Thanks Terry,

I am so sorry to laugh at your obvious discomfort, but I can just see you picking your dogs up and sniffing them. It's not imagining your expression that makes me laugh, but imagining your dogs' expressions.

It's just a really funny image.

I say that I "hallucinate" smells. But not so rapidly as you do.
The brain is a fascinating thing.

I get the smell and taste of that stinky stuff they put in natual gas, except it also has a metallic smell and taste, sort of like I put a penny in my mouth that had been sprayed by a skunk. The smell/taste will last for 10 minutes or so if I'm going to get a really bad migraine. For a normal migraine, it just lasts a couple of seconds. I use to look around for a gas leak when I got this aura.

Other times, I get waves of a strange metallic smell that makes me instantly nauseous.

Before I was diagnosed with migraines, these smells made me think I had a brain lesion that was causing seizures.

I don't get the smell thing, but I do get tastes. A coppery, metallic taste is one of the more common. The other is a super sweet, saccharin like taste.

I was glad to see your post. I thought I was crazy when I could swear I smelled maple syrup. It sounds like mine isn't so bad after reading some of the others.
Take care, Dona

13. "Twist"
Here's a twist. My husband and I were eating dinner. He doesn't usually have a beverage. I had a glass of milk.

It tasted like it had a hint of strawberry flavoring in it to me but I discounted it. I figured it was just my new ramped up dosage of Neurontin skewing my taste.

My husband picked up my glass and was going to take a drink and he told me it was sour. I smelled it when he offered up to me and it was. I didn't even notice I was drinking sour milk!

I hope I don't sick now!
