"sudden falling asleep"
hi all, i wish i could reply to some of the posts here, but right after i checked my hotmail, which was right before i came here, i felt the devil getting agitated again, and i REALLY do NOT want to rile him up again, not after the last week before this!

my eyes are getting bad blurry too and it is getting harder to read the keyboard, so this will be my only appearance tonight.

i have a quick question. i want to know if anybody on here has had any sudden sleep episodes that they do not even know has happened until they wake up later?

i have been having these lately, about twice a week, for about three weeks now, thank god they have only been in front of the TV, in the evening, and not while i was at work or in my car!

i simply pass out, i guess, but one minute i am watching one show, and the next minute, i am watching a completely different show, and i realized that i missed an entire 30 minutes! this usually lasts about 30 minutes, give or take a minute or two.

and when i wake back up, my head is in such pain! it seems to trigger a migraine flare-up on my left side, and i don't understand it!

and then, later on, it is almost impossible to fall asleep, and i get only about 4 hours total.

i have heard of some people on here talk about that, like patti, and i don't remember who else.

has this happened to anybody else? and what is going on here? should i be worried about this? if i need to go to my dr. about this, then i will, even though i can't really afford it.

thank you for any replies, and i am sorry i can't reply to anybody else tonight, maybe tomorrow night i will feel better, if the devil decides not to get out his weapons after all, god i hope not!

I dont know what to tell you on how to fix it Caroline, but I do know what you are going through.

If I dont have insominia, I am falling asleep. I smoke okay, well here bout 3 weeks ago I feel asleep with my cig in my hand when I woke up later I honestly cant remember how long I was out, my cig had burnt up. it had burnt all the way to the butt, what was really weird though was the fact that it burnt between my fingers and I did not even feel it. It is still not healed yet. I mean I burnt that thing damn near to the bone.

Then there have been many many times I have literly fallen asleepon the commoade. I will wake up falling off. Hell I have even fallin asleep standing at teh kitchen counter cooking supper.

I was gonna talk to the doctor about it but changed my mind when it stopped. But everyonece in awhile now I will still fall asleep like that, My poor blanket I keep on me in my chair has so many burn holes in it it is pathetic. I am really suprised I ahvent burnt teh house down yet.

If it keeps persisitng go to the dotor where has to be some reason for this, and yea I know I should go tot he doc too, but..........

just wanted to let you know that you weren't alone dear.

Miss Patti!!! I had no idea that you smoked! I am going to ride your butt now! You need to quit. No ifs, ans or buts about it!

Please quit not just for your sake (gee whiz...you know how bad it is for you, I don't need to lecture you there) but for your husband and your family!

I can get on you about this because I quit smoking. I know how hard it is. I smoked for 14 years and I quit cold turkey.

I am not telling you I am something special because I did that. I am telling you because I have absolutely no will power. I don't know how I did it but I did.

Please, please...if only not to burn the house down! What would we do without you! And those wrinkles around your mouth are from smoking! Smoking ruins your skin!

Don't be mad at me for this post. I am typing because I care. Stick anything in your mouth but a cigarette. Chew gum, eat, suck on candy, chew a toothpick...anything but those nasty, legalized killers!

Can you tell I am passionate about this? LOL

caroline - i have dealt with this also. and you know that i have sleep disorders. this can be in cahoots with your migraines also. you may want to speak with a dr about it and be refered to a sleep specialist. i am sorry that you have to deal with it.

there are times that i have woken up also with cigarette burns through my tshirts that i wear to bed and have burns on me from that. i have had to learn when i am going to bed how to recognize when to roll over and go to sleep. it is scary to wake up with a cigarette burned all the way down and realize that you could have burned your house down!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-20-02 AT 11:19 PM (CMT)

Early this year, I started having the same thing happen to me. The first one I noticed, was IN the car driving myself and kids to West Virginaia. We live near Indianapolis. My oldest son was sitting in the middle of the middle seat in the mini van. He noticed I was coming up behind another mini van and wasn't slowing down. He yelled at me and I had to quikly change lanes. Several times he did this. MOM, CONCRETE WALL!! MOM, SEMI!!! I pulled into a rest stop and told them I had to sit there and sleep for about 15 mins. I had to leave the van running, it was in Feb. He woke me up after the short nap. I tried again, and the same thing. I pulled into another rest stop and took a 30 min nap. Tried again. Finally we stopped and got out and walked around and got coffee or something. I was fine after that, but did get a migraine several hours later. Another very noticable time was when I was talking to a patient on the phone at work. Mind you she is a bit boring, but I fell asleep while she was talking. I was so embarrassed!! She woke me up by asking who she was talkign to. I told her and she said, Well it doesn't sound like you. Same thing, a few hours later a migraine. The Dr. said he had just gotten new information on migraines and that that was mentioned as a precurser to the migraines. I don't know about any other big ones. I do notice the falling asleep in front of the TV and waking up to a different show. I also started seziure type episodes along the same time. The neurologist I saw wants to call it panick attacks. I don't agree!! I have however tried to destress myself as much as possiable right now. This seems to have helped. There are a few other issues I need to take care of as far as the stress, but this isn't the time. Hope you feel better and don't nodd off at the wrong time like I did. I risked a lot of lives and feel terriable about that!!! Teresa
PS: Having a mini migraine now, so please pardon all the misspellings and typos!

Geez louise how can you people smoke with that horrible pain in the head?!
Anyway sudden falling asleep might be contributed to narcolepsy or catalepsy, something like that. Also but I don't think this is the case dopamine taking. That much I got from Internet.
Up above is this white box, type "sudden falling asleep" and something will come up. Or, try sleep disorders..

John, you are right. I am sorry if I made Patti feel guilty. I know how tough it is to quit. I also know the time has to be right or it won't work. I will apologize to Patti in a separate thread.

9. "RE: sudden falling asleep"
Yes, I was also going to say it sounds just like narcolepsy. An old coworker of mine had it- she would be in the middle of typing something, and she'd just fall asleep, totally out-of-the-blue!

It would happen to her a lot, in the middle of phone calls w/customers, in the middle of meetings, and she'd have no idea it was happening, and the spells would last from about 30 seconds to several minutes. She didn't suffer from migraines (as far as I knew), but she was very petite, a heavy smoker, in her late 60's and she was overweight. The scary thing is that she still drives knowing she has this condition!

I'd check w/your dr ASAP considering that it could be that you're actually passing out and not really falling asleep, since it happens for over 30 minutes. Keep us informed, and I hope you feel better. -Kathleen

10. "RE: sudden falling asleep"
well, my sleep disorders specialist thought i had narcolepsy also - proved him wrong. sleep apnea, sleep hypopnea, and RLS. I just wasnt sleeping. that was my problem.

As I have gotten on with these problems, I have figured out when I am sleepy at night and that is when the light goes out and i turn over and go to sleep. tonight is going to be a long night tho - homework night, tomorrow night football game, saturday Iron Bowl....all I wanna do is sleep! LOL

I am a smoker too... still... durn it....
I too had falling asleep problems, especially back when I first started getting migraines. I also had a VERY LOW thyroid. I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis.... sheesh... look it up it's complicated....

but when I go through dips in the thyroid, I fall asleep any where. another reason I am afraid to drive.

Hope this helps could be thyroid too... hugz candleshoe

Wow I never thought of the thyroid. I had mine checked out a few years back because of sudden weight gain but that was it. Hum something to take with me to the doctors next time I go. Thank you.

It is really weird though, cause like some said I can be talking on the phone and poof I am out. Like today I was typing my message to John and Risa and poof I was asleep, took me 2 hours to finish typing that dang thing. lol

13. "RE: sudden falling asleep"
wow, thank you for the replies! especially candleshoe.

i had not considered the thyroid as a possible problem here, mainly because i have had my thyroid checked 2 years ago, and it was just fine. it may not be anymore though!

i did not know that low thyroid activity could result in passing out or anything like that. i might have it checked out once i get all my study $$$$ and start the doctor's visits i badly need.

but thank you all for sharing, and i might be back here in a few days. taking sort of a "break" since i feel the devil toying with my brain, since tuesday, and i think i might aggravate him more if i stay on here too long. that has been part of my recent month pain problem, besides mother nature and the devil having that party, so i just have to be careful of how long i stay on here, and pay attention to when the devil tells me to quit.

be back next week sometime!
