"Does Nicotine Withdrawal Cause Migs?"
I've taken the plunge and quit smoking for my big New Year's resolution after 25 years of at least a pack a day, if not more. I haven't had one now in over 12 hours and have a mighty migraine coming on. I'm using a patch and a nicotine inhaler prescribed by my pulmonary doc, but am wondering if nicotine withdrawal is going to plague me with migraines now. Have any of you quit smoking and found yourself dealing with migraines? This one's a real doozy, hitting like a lead weight sitting on the left side of my head. Any words of wisdom? - Donna

LAST EDITED ON Jan-01-03 AT 12:43 PM (CMT)

It is possible that any withdrawal might trigger off headaches, but this should not last longer then a week, or so...

But I would also look into possiblility of the inhaler causing the problems - I find that such devices as sprays and inhalers often have many additional chemicals or gases in them, which are secret headache triggers.

By the way M can travel from one side of your head to another...

But you are definitely doing the right thing giving up - I did many years ago after being quite a heavy smoker and it really improved my health and I had much fewer headaches...

It is really worth the effort. And my complexion has been incredibly improved ever since. Smoking seriously ruins your skin...

Perhaps you could try to stop the inhaler for a week or two and to see if you still need to use it...

Good luck, and it will get easier...

Hi Donna,
Honestly, I don't know, (I've never been a smoker-probably because cigarette smoke has always been a powerful trigger for me) but it seems likely- (anything seems to be a trigger at different times, doesn't it?) But, that said- I am so glad that you've decided to do this for yourself. I'm sure the benefits will outweigh any withdrawal symptoms. Just remind yourself that you are doing a wonderful thing!

Love,
Anna

Hi I just quit smoking in early december and it can cause withdrawl affects like M's or shaking but it is worth it and the nicotine withdrawl is only 3 or 4 days then you need to deal with the emotional and physical side of quitting.
Good luck and stay with it even with the M because the benefits of quitting out weigh going back to them.

Thanks everybody for replying so quickly. I feel sorry for my family in the days to come when they have to put up with the short temper and irritability! For now I'm going to take a shot of Imitrex and rest my head. I feel like I've got a hangover and didn't even get to enjoy the party! I guess that's the price I pay for the years of the bad habit. Thanks again. - Donna

Well, I made it through day one despite the migraine and woke up this morning to the smell of cigarette smoke wafting up into my kitchen from the basement where my husband had been smoking. Interesting because I hadn't noticed before when I was smoking too that the smoke smell came upstairs behind us after we shut the door. And I also hadn't noticed how bad it smells!

So the next patch is on, the migraine is gone, my Nicotrol Inhaler is reflled with a new cartridge, and I'm ready for day 2 to begin. I know the days get worse before they get better, and I'm afraid the migraines will stay with me for awhile, so all of you out there reading this send really good and supportive thoughts my way. I know I can't do it alone. Thanks. - Donna
