"Sleep Disorder doc appt today"
OK...went to new sleep disorder doc today. Here is the verdict:

RLS (Restless Legs Syndrome) and PLMD (Periodic Limb Movement Disorder), with Mild Sleep Apnea. We are using an old sleep test, not going to do another test until we know if we need one.

We are taking away Klonopin. upping Miripex. Everything else stays the same. Did a blood test today (what else?) and may have to start iron supplements. There is some specific test that they will do to see if my iron is low.

We discussed neurontin and depakote and weight gain. I have to loose some weight - we did not discuss methods of weight loss. There is a scale and if the Dopamines do not work, maybe something else along the lines of Klonopin (restoril, valium, etc) will help, if not, then we will go to something else. Last thing...weird thing too....Opiods.

We changed Prozac to a morning med. Cannot, absolutely cannot take antihistamines. Antiemetics will make it worse, as well as Calcium channel blcokers, and major tranquilizers.
Wow.

The doctor also gave me a website to check out if i wanted to. I know there are several people who are interested in this. Here is the site www.rls.org

Well, ok.

about Friday - went to ER. was given Reglan and toradol. guess what? didnt work...

Hi Renee.
Maybe a clear diagnosis of sleep problems will help a bit with M too?
Will new meds stop you from kicking?
You know, once I was sure my M and sleep disorders are connected - I was having M only in the morning for long, long time. Even asked my neuro to send me to sleep specialist, which is BTW next to his office.
But he said as a last resort. That was long time ago and since then I've got M coming later in the day sometime , and since I have no plm with sleeping (phtoo phtoo) I've dropped the subject.

I've read your post about ER. Sorry 'bout that. Are you sure it wasn't Goofy on duty?

Hi Sleepyhead! I went to the Sleep Clinic the first part of January and the doctor I saw there also diagnosed me with RLS. They put me on Neurontin for that. I have lots of problems getting to sleep and once I get to sleep a wake up a lot and toss and turn a lot. They gave me Sonata to take to help me sleep but I can't say that I see a lot of difference with the Sonata. I go go the Sleep Lab on February 11th to spend the night and stay the day on the 12th. They had to taper me off my Zoloft to have the sleep study done. You mentioned the blood tests...they did a Ferritin level (this is iron absorption) and a B12 level on me. I heard back from them last week that my Ferritin level was 9 and in Neurology they like it to be at least 50. Consequently they put me on Iron (here comes constipation). My B12 level was 312 and they like it to be at least 350 so they put me on B12 and if my level does not come up with the pills they will start giving me B12 injections. They think the reason my levels are so low is because I had a partial gastrectomy due to ulcers 12 years ago. I'll let you know how my sleep study goes.

Sorry about your ER experience, I have been lucky recently with the ER, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Linda

hey Risa -

I have understood since I was diagnosed 2 years ago with sleep disorders that sleep disorders and M's go hand in hand. The miripex that I have been on has helped, but I have been self-governing it and raising it when I needed. This doctor is closely watching my medications bc I asked her to. Oh, and the ER crap - guess what? Us insomniacs are not suppose to take Reglan - HAHA - yeah it was the Goofy doc and not me. Next time I go in, I am INSISTING on demerol and phenegran with benedryl.

Lindy -

The ferritin level test is what they are running. They are not as worried about the B12 or at least she didnt say anything about it. Because this runs in my family and there are other problems that run in the family, she is looking at the ferritin level. It was explained to me about what level they like the ferritin to be at and all.

I like my new doc. she is real nice and young (most of my new docs are young). She wants me to lose weight. 40 lbs needs to come off. We will not do another sleep test unless we cannot correct what we are working on now. (WHEW!)

until i see her next time, i want to lose about 10 lbs. i see her in 2 months. i think she would like that dont you?

I also have RLS. I was diagnosed first try by my favorite PA. I was also getting more migs due to the lack of good sleep. I was put on Desyrel(Trazadone) 150 mg at bedtime. It is supposed to be an antidepressant, which are sometimes bad for RLS sufferers.

Anyway I sleep really good with the Desyrel. I can't go without, not even for one night without a problem. Last night my legs were really burning for about 15 minutes and then I obviously fell asleep. Desyrel works alot better if you have some food in your belly.

It is not polite to kick your husband who takes blood thinners everyday for his artificial heart valve.

Like I said, I feel lucky to have found help on the very first try. I did go to the RLS web site, I had no idea that it is so common.

I do have the problem of med interactions. Many times when I would get a demerol/phenergan shot I would get very restless/itchy. I also get that with codeine/hydrocodones/valium ...after reading the RLS web site I think the hyperness is due to RLS.And not a true allergy like I thought.

People have thought I was kinda nuts for years. THey couldn't believe that I hated massages. Sometimes a loving caress on the arm or shoulder and I want to climb out of my skin.

Thanks for such a great topic...really applied to me...I had no idea I had so much company in the RLS department.

I went back and re read your post. I saw the reference to Reglan. I took that one time in the hospital when I was on iv antibiotics for severe PID. One shot and I was hallucinating, saw bugs, envisioned jumping out of my hosptial room window. It was awful. This was before I had my actual diagnosis of RLS. I always say I am allergic to it so they just never mention giving it to me. Again, maybe not a true allergy. INTERESTING>>

Oh Tink - I am sorry I confused you! I re-read my initial post and I see it is confusing.

The Topamax is known for helping to lose weight. Opiods are known to helps with RLS since they knock you out and make you sleep.

Just wanted to point out that the anti-nausea medications can cause that type of reaction in people - extremely aggitated, crawl out of your skin feeling - they do consider that to be a detrimental side-effect, it happend to me with compazine IV and Vistaril IM - not with phenergan in any form.

My doctors have advised me not to have those medications again as the reaction can be more severe the next time. Not fun to be in the throes of a migraine and then want to kill everyone around you.

It can also make your muscles and joints contract severely.

The only thing they can do is give Benadryl, but some ER docs will not add to the list of meds they have already given you. It is amazing how much I have learned about doctors in the short time I have been battling migraines.

I am lucky to have an ER near my home that is staffed with docs who are willing to give decent amounts of pain meds to migraine patients. Not so in other areas. I have been to the ER in another small town in my state - that is where I learned I will never take vistaril again!! My doc said I should have walked out.

I just wanted to make sure you keep listing it as an allergic reaction - although allergy might be a strong word to use. My doctors office and hospital outpatient services & ER consider it to be as such.

Good luck with the new plan for better sleep!! Thanks for posting such valuable information. Lynn

Good luck with weight loss on the Topamax Sleepyhead. My doctor also told me that it would cause weight loss but I did not lose an ounce. I am now on Weight Watchers trying to lose some weight and am not having a lot of success due to the fact that I have low thyroid and my doctor is still trying to decide what type of medication to put me on.
