"Got a weird question for ya'll,Mary, and Richard I would like your input on this too,"
Please. Seeing as ya'll have seen so many specialist and have done intensive studies on migraines and medications. Not really weird I guess, but probably unusual for some. But then again what can we expect from me?? LOL

Is there anyone in here who has low migraine pain that is tolerable but, and I say BUT bigly.(bigly, I dont even think that is a word. lol) The naseua is horriable. My daily pain levels are fairly low I mean I still have pain being on the oxycontin but most of the time I can live with it. I mean I have lortabe to take also so. Oh well getting off track.

Back to the naseua question. I have had daily naseua for ever. I asked my doctor about it and he said that is just something I have to live with seeing how my migraines are, just be happy I am not as in much pain as I was last year. So he said to just take my phenergen.

He has ran all kinds of test on me and everything is normal in there, so............just chalk one up to another weirdo notch on my stick.

Well I end up taking phenergen any where from 2 3 times daily. Well I have looked everywhere on here for side effects of long term use of phenergen and can't find anything. All though, I think the phenergen is what is making my teeth so bad. Because my teethe are just going to hell. And I mean bad real bad.

I dont have to take my break through meds very often so I have ruled them out. And the meds I take for the pseudo tumor I dont think would cause this, so I am thinking it has to be the phenergen.

these are the meds I take daily so ya'll know

oxycontin- 40mg 2 times daily
zantac-150mg 2 times daily
zanaflex-4mg 3 times daily
xanax-.05mg cut in half 2 times a day
Diamox-500mg 2 times daily

Then like I said I take phenergan 2-3 times a day. If I dont I puke all the time. and that is 75mg each time.

I have looked and looked to see if phenergan can cause your teeth to go bad but have been unable to find anything. So was just wondering what ya'll all thought.

So any ideas or thoughts would be very appreciated.

wishing everyone some pain free time, today, tomorrow and in the future.

Dear Patti,
I am not familiar with your medicines so I cannot comment.

However, I can relate to feeling of sickness.

Daily headaches are gone with Neurontin and after stopping all painkillers, but I still occasionaly get mild M which usually starts with feeling a bit sick, nauseous...

Anti-nausea medicine does not seem to help me.

But I read some time ago and now I do it all the time -GINGER TEA - it is delicious and it really helps me with feeling sick. I cannot promise it works for eveyrybody, but it is nice and I like it anyway. I now keep some made, and just add hot water to the same ginger and use it several times.

I buy root ginger, peel an chop it finely (to make about two tablespoons) then pour boiling water over it, put it in the microwave for about 1 min to speed things up, let it stand for about 15 min at least - the longer the better - and drink it hot, or cold it does not matter.
You can add honey if you want.

You can add more ginger, if you want it really hot, try to experiment and see if you like it

Howdy,

Nausea itself is extremely bad on our teeth. Stomach acid eats away at tooth enamel like something in a science fiction movie.

that's all I can add. Sorry

Nika,

where would I buy that stuff at?? A health food store or a regular grocery store? And do you have to add anything else to it like cinimin? Cause cinimin will kill my stomache something horriably not to mention trigger a migraine

thanks for the info.

You can get it in a food store - it is just like a thick root. Best of all you can always get fresh ginger root in chinese food store as it is used a lot in chinese cooking.
(Chinese people would also know where to get it, if you know any...)

Ginger beer?
It is the same stuff that ginger beer is made of. Just ginger beer is sweet and fizzy...No, you do not need to add anything to it jsut boiling hot water. You can add homey if you prefer it a little sweet, but I like it as it is.

Hi Patti, I am on oxycontin too (3+years now). It gets me through the day. I still have pain and days the breakthrough pain is too much I have percocet. (I had oxyir at one time)

I am nauseaus all the time as well. Have been pretty much my whole life. When I was born I would drink about 1/2 my bottle and toss the rest up. Mom took me to my baby Dr who was the best in the state and he said my stomach had not fully grown so she was to feed me 1 ounce, then wait an hour and feed me the other ounce, etc. till my stomach could handle the normal dosage.

That has followed me my whole life. I can't eat normal portions most people eat. I eat smaller meals more often. I think I can almost throw up on demand! My Grandmother and my Mom's brother have what they call a nervous stomach (me too). This is from the old school Dr's that they saw. We take our stress in our stomach.

Years ago I moved away from home for my 1st big job and a 2 years later I was transferred back home, so I moved in with Mom. Well, the stress of the new job, living back under Mom's roof took a toll on my stomach. I went to the Dr's and he said if I don't learn to vent more I will end up with an ulcer. He put me on tagament and I tried it for awhile and it didn't seem to help. I was not a pill person back then so I hated taking it.

I found eating pretzels, saltines calms my stomach down more. I carry a bag of pretzels every where with me. One beside my bed, downstairs, I had one at work every day, in the car, you name it. I am the pretzel lady. I like one particular brand and the stores around here don't carry it. So every so often I get someone to go with me to the pretzel outlet in Reading, PA.

I buy 3 cases (it's buy 2 get 1 free) which I instead of being 12 in a case, I stick the 6 free ones in the case as well. The people at the store look at me like I am nuts, but who cares! I explain no stores carry them around me and they just smile. I think they talk about me all week long!

I take enough pills now to survive and taking one more for my stomach bothers me when pretzels work. I till feel nauseaus but not as bad. When a big migraine hits, I have phenagren supp., but they knock me out, which is ok when I am in that much pain anyway.

It's terrible to be nauseaus all the time. I know. I wish for once I could be hungry and crave food. To go to a restuarant and really want to eat. To be able to clean my plate and ask for desert. Sometimes certain food smells will do me in. I am sorry you are in the same boat.

I wish I could give you a better answer than pretzels and saltines. I wake up in the middle of the night and eat a few so when I wake up in the morning my stomach isn't nearly as bad. I drink a lot of milk (which all the Dr's said is bad for an upset stomach), but for me, it makes it better. I need my milk in the morning like people need their coffee.

I don't eat spicy foods, drink too much caffeine, eat acidy foods, sounds like boring meals, yup. Please take care and know you are not alone. Try pretzels (not the big ones or you can break your teeth, per my dentist) or saltines and see if that helps. Sheri

Hi Patti. I can't comment much on the nausea, since that is something I rarely experience spontaneously. When I do get it, it is usually a med side effect, and gets better if I stop the med.

As to your teeth--Richard is right, first of all. If you are vomiting, the stomach acid is murder on your teeth. That is why people who are bulemic often lose their teeth.

Another thing that has a terrible effect on teeth and gums is a dry mouth. It may be that phenergan is keeping your mouth dry all the time. I'm not sure about your other meds--since diamox is a diuretic, it could also result in dry mouth I would think.

The best thing to help with that is to keep a glass or a bottle of water with you and sip on it all the time. There is also some kind of mouth spray you can get without a prescription that is supposed to imitate saliva, and help keep your mouth healthy. I can't remember the name of it, I just remember using it on people getting chemotherapy.

If your mouth is dry, it is a good idea to avoid sugary stuff, because the sugar will sit there on your teeth instead of being washed off by saliva, and it makes a wonderful environment for the bacteria that destroy teeth.

Patti,
I too suffer with the daily nausea. I've always had a delicate stomach, but since the onset of M it's been chronic. I haven't found much that works, except to keep something to nibble on all day long, be it cereal, dried fruit, or Luna Bars. I can't eat much at mealtimes, but I do have to nibble all day. Hope this helps.

If that helps at all, in my book about M it's explained that if nausea centre and vomiting centre (it might means those are two separate centres) are close to the inflammed site during M attack, then we are nauseous and or/ vomit.

Sometimes M doesn't touch those places, then we don't have this unpleasantness.

...
the only advice- to take anti- nausea pills, nothing else there.

I am a registered dental hygienist with 20 years experience. Norma is right on the money. Phenergan dries up the mouth, as do some of the other drugs you list. When the mouth is drier than it should be it makes for lots of cavities. THe reason is after you eat the saliva(spit) stays acidic from the carbohydrates you have eaten. Until that time where the body produces enough saliva and it becomes neutral instead of acidic you have acids eating away at the enamel. The pretzel idea, it may work but the frequent ingestion of them (they are a carbohydrate) causes a rise in the acidity of the saliva with every bite.

Best suggestions. Chew lots of sugar free gum especially after you eat. This increases the saliva flow so it gets rid of the acidity faster.
The products such as gum and spray for dry mouth are from a company called Biotene. Bigger drug stores would have them. Or your dentist. Avoid sucking hard candy, sips of any kind of pop. Not even diet. Read it's label....it has acid in it.
It would also be worth your time to use like a fluoride rinse like ACT twice per day for extra protection. Your dentist can also prescribe or distribute extra strength fluoride products.
A simple spray bottle of water is great during the day.

Biotene also makes a toothpaste and other products for the oral cavity.

Hi Sandi, thanks for the explanation of what's happening inside our mouth. I drink tons of water every day. I am surprised about the pretzels though, as I eat at least 1-2 bags a day. I am 5'6" and generally weigh about 120-125 and have been that weight for 15+ years.

I was very skinny as a kid and never had to worry about weight. I am down to 109 right now with the nausea and stress. I brush my teeth though after every meal and I haven't had a cavity in over 20 years. Thanks for the tip about Biotene, I will have to check that out. Sheri

Norma,
If you are getting alot of decay also add a special toothpaste. You can buy Gel-Kam from the pharmacist.Just ask for it. It is stronger than regular tooth paste. It has higher fluoride content. I use Prevident 5000 that you need an Rx for. I have trouble with decay and dry mouth. Do not swallow either of these, and don't rinse your mouth or drink for 30 minutes after use. I use them and go to bed. I also had fluoride trays made and use them when I can. They are like mouth guards and I put the paste in and keep in my muoth for 30 mins.

Does the doc think it's some of your meds? I hate that feeling so much! I hope you can get some relief.

I just found a wonderful new drug today in fact for nausea. I haven't eaten in days and went to see my new doctor. I told him that I needed some injectible phenergen cuz I just cannot eat. He gave me a prescription for Transderm Scop Patch. You wear it behind your ear for 3 days @ a time. Within the 1st hour of wearing it I felt so much better - I couldn't believe it. @ least one thing is now solved. Try and ask your doctor about it. If you need more info e-mail me.

Dear Patti-
Fascinating that you should mention this - for the first time I think I have had this experience; I had a whole afternoon recently of intense nausea, but no HA at all...

finally I took a Zomig just to see what would happen, and within an hour the nausea was gone.

It must have been an M, but without the pain...(usually I have excruciating HA pain with an M...)
Very weird, and hasn't happened again...yet.
That was one of two very strange M's I have had lately, the other involving seizures every time the phone rang... but that's another story.
love,
Holly

Hi Holly, I am glad the zomig worked for you. DO you take it often? I start at 2.5mg and work up. Fortunately I have been able to control my migraine at 7.5mg, since I can't go over 10mg.

One ER Dr gave me benadryl for the nausea, so I keep a box of it to help sometimes when the nausea is worse than usual. The only thing with most nausea medicine for me is that I fall asleep. I hope all is well with you. PLease take care, Sheri

I find peppermint tea better than ginger for nausea...you can get the tea-bags in most health food stores but if you're lucky enough to have some growing in your garden, pull off a few leaves, put them in a cup and pour on boiling water, allow to infuse then drink

18. "RE: nausea!!!"
Hi ALL,

Patti, I see you have been given lots of good advice but of course I have to add my two cents worth.

I suffer with nausea almost daily but mine are linked with the level of pain I have that day. I have used gravol and it works wonders but I am not sure if you have that in the states or maybe it is under a different name there?? Actually they give it many times with pain meds as it works well together. (just a thought).

As for nausea without the migraine, when I was in the investigation program for six weeks I met a few migrainers that often got all the side effects of a migraine even when the pain was not there. When it was discussed with one of the specialists they attributed this to the aura some get before the migraine only the migraine doesn't present it self but the aura comes anyways.

Oh, for the teeth unfortunately everyone is correct the acid from nausea/vomiting eats at ones teeth as well does some of the meds that cause dehydration not to mention if your like myself when you are migraineing/vomiting you probably get really dehydrated and sometimes it can last a couple of days while your fighting the migraine. I also remembered you have been sick with some other problems besides the migraines, were you ever running any fevers?? I was told by a doctor when my son was young that the high fevers and anti-biotics ate the enamal on his teeth as by the time he was two all his baby teeth were rotten. I was not sure if this ever happened with you but thought it was another idea.

My last thought try and do all you can as suggested in the posts above to protect your teeth from these circumstances as with my case having chronic migraines and often vomiting and getting dehydrated most of my teeth were rotten by 20 and by 22 I already had false teeth. Another thing I can thank my migraines for. Oh well, false teeth don't bother me near as much as migraines. Patti, wishing you lots of migraine free days, you deserve it girl. Oh, and I am very happy to hear you are getting some pain free days. love roxy.

Hey there:
This was happening to me, too. I took tons of phenergan for a few months with no relief at all. My migraine doc checked out my tummy and decided that the years of usuing indocin (supps, not oral) had taken its toll on my stomach lining.

So he put me on carafate, 1000 mg four times a day. The carafate works differently than a drug like zantac in that it coats the stomach. Its a pain to use, I can't take my other meds with it because it will block the absorbtion of the other meds. But it is worth it, my daily nausea disappeared after a day of using it.

I still get the nausea with the migs, but that can be controlled more or less with phenergan.

Good luck!
joelle

Thank you all so much for all of the wonderfull information ya'll gabe me. I think I am gonna come to the conclusion that the it is the acid. Oh and also I was told earlier in life that sense I had my kids so close together that I lost so much calcium that that did not help at all.

Joelle, I would love to try that medication, unforutantly I am on a medication I can not afford to go off of for any reason, other than death. lol The medication I take for my pseudo tumor is very very important and I just cant afford to mess with that one. Thank you though so much for the information.

My theory is that is is a side effect from your meds. You are taking quite a few meds...some of which have nausea as a side effect..so if you are taking a bunch..I suspect that your body is struggling a bit with that symptom. I find that often what people think may be a condition of some sort...then turns out to be a side effect. Medically speaking they have not done too much research on the effects of combining drugs. I find this scary because who knows how they are interacting? Anyhow, can you not take a low dose of gravol. I sometimes take the kids version and find that it is enough to keep it at bay.
