"Hair Loss - side effect to nortriptyline?"
Has anyone else had this happen? I have lost about 50% of my hair, not causing any major baldness, but the entire texture and thickness of my hair has changed since using this drug as a profylactic. My neurologist then switched me to Inderal LA, but that just made the migraines worse so I came off of everything. I was on the nortriptyline for about 8 months before I noticed the problem, and after being off for about 6 months now, it is still occurring. The only meds I still use are Imitrex Nasal Spray in emergencies and Excedrin Migraine to combat normal migraine pain. But us menstrual migraine sufferers can agree, nothing works on those - I am currently on day 2 and 2 sprays and 6 Excedrin have done nothing to alleviate this pain. Any similar experiences with hair loss as a side effect to meds would be appreciated since alopetia is not a known side effect to nortriptyline, nor any of the other meds I have used in the past for the migraines.

Thanks

1. "depakote hair loss"
I had a general thinning of my hair while on depakote. I would wash it and have to pull the hairs off of my hands. Reminded me of my previous Chemo days so I insisted on a medication switch..haven't noticed it on neurontin. I KNOW the migraine pain is horrible, but sometimes with all of the nasty side effects.... I feel like giving up on meds. Still hoping for that magic pill that takes away the migraines without any of the nasty stuff. oh well, just a dream.

Boy do I relate to the hair loss. Depakote, Neurotin and Sansert all did it for me. Im off them all but only after 20lbs and about half of my hair. When you said you wonder if its all worth tring to prevent the migraines, I do agree. I have about 7 to 9 monthly and think I'll just go insane instead.

2. "hair loss...nortriptyline"
Hi Nyscorpio! I was on nortriptyline a couple of years back for depression and I lost a lot of hair. I never mentioned it to my doctor as I wasn't on it long enough to consider that a factor, but I was checking out a website on it the other day, and apparently it is a side effect, although seen infrequently. While I obviously can't tell you if that's what's causing your hair loss, I do know that medications such as the ones a lot of us migraneurs take as preventatives do take time to get out of our system.... just like they do to build up. Also, stress is a big contributor to hair loss too... I kept losing hair for about 6 months after I was taken off of nortriptyline and put on other meds. Well, I really just wanted to let you know you aren't alone. Hope you feel better soon.
Love, Liefh
