"Anyone else have a high pulse rate?"
Hi everyone, I'm new to this site and am very thankful to have found you. I was at my PMD yesterday and the nurse said that my pulse rate was very high (she checked it several times during the 4 hours I was there) and told me to have it checked out by my PCD.

Any comments on this would be appreciated.

Thanks, Connie

When I do those blodd-pressure checks at the store, they check your pulse also, and mine is always low. My blood pressure is always low, too, and sometimes the nurses checking it ask if I am alive because they cannot find it!

How high was it? Mine is high too, usually around 89 or so, but I usually have low blood pressure so this is a good sign, means my heart is strong. I haven't checked mine recently though, I had mildy elevated bp for me at the gyn last time, tension and not feeling well prolly. Emme

Before my headaches began, I had an extremely low pulse and fairly low blood pressure.

After headaches, my pulse has always raced, even when I ran 10 miles a day for many years.

My blood pressure plummeted, but that seemed due to the meds I was taking.

However, since off meds that would lower it, blood pressure still 90/60.

I've often asked about it, but drs don't seem to want to investigate and discover, just treat symptoms.

Are you on any preventives for your migraines? I had a pulse rate of 110-130 for a few weeks before a cardiologist figured out that it was the anti-depressants that I was taking to prevent my migraines that was causing it. I THINK he called it tricyclic tachycardia.

Thanks for your replies. Really, it's the least of my worries right now at least. I was just really curios. My pulse rate yesterday was in between 110-117. My BP is normal (except during extreme mig. attack it goes way high). Sometimes I get really jittery, hands shake, voice shakes and people have pointed this out to me. Now I'm wondering if it has something to do with my pulse rate.

I'm on Topamax and Effexor as preventatives for mig. and MS Contin and Norco for pain.

6. "RE: Anyone else have a high pulse rate?"

I have always had a high pulse rate. Normal for me is 120-130, and that is how it has always been. That is not taking any type of medication at all. Now that I am on regular meds. it is still in that range. At one time a dr put me on some medication and it lowered my heart rate and I was SO tired all the time I told him I had to go off of it.

So if my pulse ever drops below a 100 I feel horriable. A week ago Monday, I had a spell where my heart started beating so fast I got very very dizzy and couldnt breathe very well. This has happened 5 times now over the past 3 years. I went to the doctor and he told me I had had a mini stroke. I did not go to the doc. last week though. I just sat in my car until it passed then my husband helped me in the house. I was afraid to move for fear I would pass out. He was so furious because I refused to go to the hospital. It took about 25-30 mins then it started slowing down. I could breathe better and then that is when I came into the house. I was very very tired afterward had a horriable migraine and very sick to my stomache. So I took my break through meds and some phenergen and went to bed. My husband called the doctor while I was asleep unknown to me and talked to him about it. He said that it was another mini stroke and I needed to come into the hospital to get checked out. But I still refused. I am just so damn tired of doctors needles medicaitons and I just dont want to see no damn hospital right now. I just too tired to fight with it all right now. I am just tired of fighting all the time and still being in pain no matter what I take or do.

But, I know there are others on here who just I dont know just give up for awhile. I will get back on track but not right now. I am just too tired of fighting so many different things right now, I am just tired.

sorry for rambling on your post.

I feel mine is low now compared to all of yours. Over the past year or so, I can feel my bp going up when I'm stressed upset, so I try to calm myself down, I really felt like I could have a stroke or some ill effects from it. Patti, I'm sorry about how bad you are feeling/doing, I understand your reluctance to go to get checked out. Maybe you should go in though and just let them take your bp at least. Go to an urgent care or to your doctor at least. Hope you'll be feeling a little better soon. Emme

Jinxie--your symptoms are typical of hyperthyroidism, though they can also be caused by some medications. A test for hyperthyroidism is simple and conclusive, so if you haven't had one done, you probably should.

Before starting Beta-blockers, my normal pulse was 110 to 120. On tricyclic antidepressants it ran 140 to 150, and the feeling just drove me nuts!

Now, on 150mg of Toprol XL/day, it runs around 80. If my head is hurting, it is less uncomfortable to have 80 throbs a minute than 120 throbs a minute, as silly as that sounds. If you are not having thyroid problems, ( an headaches can be a symptom of thyroid problems) then a beta blocker may make you more comfortable, and they are frequently prescribed for migraine prevention.

Just as an aside, some people react to opioids like Norco with an elevated pulse. I don't know if you had any in your system at the time of you appt.

I have a pet theory that people who have difficulty regulating vascular tone normally may suffer from low or high blood pressure, low or high pulse rate, and of course, the vascular derangments that contribute to migraine. I've never heard it from any official source, it just makes sense to me.

9. "RE: Anyone else have a high pulse rate?"
Ciao Connie,
pulse rate may be affected my many situations. The most common are:

Stress and anxiety
Low blood pressure (your heart beats more to let more blood reach your organs)
Indigestion
Use of drugs (anti-M are quite a good example!)
Thyroid problems (mainly hyper-thrydoism)
Dehydration
Fever

In the past I used to have high pulse, too.
Since when I have been exercising again, my pulse rate has become very regular. I used to be around 80, now I am around 65. BP is normal.

Occasional high pulse moments are not dangerous. A continuous and prolonged high pulse may cause damages to kidneys and heart.
Keeping a low pulse rate is important for the heart. The less it works, the longer it stays safe and "young".

Ciao

My pulse has always been high, but when suffering from a severe migraine, it is even higher. My doctor says this is a little unusual, but not dangerous.

In recent years, my pulse rate has been high (I figure about 90-100 BPM)but no medical professional has ever said anything to alarm me. I think it is because I have gained weight.

I wonder since I and other's do have high heart rates, that later on in life that means our heart will give out sooner than those with normal hear beats. I know that is a morbid question but it just popped in my thoughts. Anyone have a comment about this? If so I would really like to hear it. And I did not post this to scare anyone like I said it just popped into my head.

Hi Patti,
it's the same question I asked many doctors and most of them have made the same example: "it is as if you drive your car always at 170 km/hour rather than at 130". No real conclusions, just a clue....

If you are taking any of the triptans they will raise your blood pressure quite a lot. This is one of the reasons that I stopped taking it. I just could not rationalize the effects on my body. It scared me.

It is also common for pulse rate to increase at a Dr.s office...its called white coat syndrome...

Simple questions we ask are....was there a big flight of stairs before you got into the office. Are you fit enough to handle them? That can certainly raise the rate. Do Dr's make you nervous?

Things like this seem silly but sometimes they are the reason. Could be meds, could be stress....

Hi Marion, no, that day I didn't have a migraine, just my usual daily headache.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I am kind of concerned so I'll have it checked out. Maybe it happened just that day for some unknown reason.

I'll let you guys know what I find out.
