"Visit to psychiatrist"
Hello all!

I don't know if you all remember, but a few weeks ago, I told you that my PCP and neuro got together and decided I wasn't having migraines. They said my depression was causing my headaches and they wanted me to see a psychiatrist. Well, I went to see this psychiatristlast week and I don't remember who said that they could turn out to be the one to help me most, but that statement was right on! This doctor said "I can't believe they said you're depressed, because you're not. You are just suffering from migraines." So she added Topamax to my combination and I'm actually feeling pretty good this week!

She said she was going to send a note by to my PCP and my neuro and tell them her diagnosis was "Migraine Headaches". I wonder how my neuro is going to feel about that! He was so sure all of this was in my head. Brother!

I hope everyone is having a pain free day! God bless!

Becky

That's so awesome. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they see the shrink's letter.

My number one problem with doctors is that they prefer to say you have mental issues if there isn't something visibly wrong that they can fix.

Recently with a health issue, a doctor said I was stressed and that was what triggered those attacks. I said, after much discussion with him, that if my attacks were caused by stress, then I would be having a huge one Right Now!!

Well, after much ado, apparently the problem was a medication I was on, not my mental health.

!!!!!!

Best wishes
Dorothy

Becky, that's just wonderful. Psychiatrists have a bad rep in some circles - and there are some dreadful ones - but when they are good, when they care and do their jobs, they really can be of great benefit.
I am just so pleased for you! Will you continue to see her? It's helpful to me just to have someone on my side.
Best of luck with the Topomax.

Thanks for all the replies! And yes, Elise, I do have another appointment to see her. Like you said, it's always good to have someone on your side!

As for the Topamax, so far so good. She is starting me out on a low dose and slowly working me up. From everything I've read that's the trick to taking this stuff. Every once in a while I'll forget what I'm doing or how to so something, but it's only been minor things.

Oh boy I wish I could see their faces too.
I bet they were very irritatingly sure of themselves when they told you that.
Glad the psychiatrist was such a help.
maybe you should consider changing your drs?

My guess is that it really annoys a good psychiatrist when a medical dr can't comprehend that emotional distress is a normal reaction to physical pain.

Dear Becky~~
That is great news. The same thing happened to me, but that was about 30 years ago. My drs picked out the psychiatrists who were associated with the pain clinics.

They didn't think I was necessarily depressed, just probably crazy. Otherwise, why in the world did I have constant pain? When one psychiatrist said that the headache was my problem, they disregarded that and sent me to another. He said the same thing. They disregarded him, too.

I thought we were well out of the dark ages. It shocks me for a neurologist to have such an attitude now.

Doesn't he ever read any journals? Neurology journals are filled with migraine and headache articles.

Perhaps your psychiatrist could recommend another dr for you.

So glad it worked out so well for you. They can be our best advocates when necessary.

It's great when you have a doctor on your side. I haven't tried the Topamax yet. Let me know if it helps you in anyway.
