LAST EDITED ON May-30-03 AT 06:35 PM (CMT)

Hey guys,
I need your help. I taken Vicodin and Midrin for the migraines. Lately, the Vicodin isn't touching the pain(when I can keep it down). What helps you? What should I ask my neurologist for. I get confused between all the migraine meds.

I can't take the triptans or ergotamines.I have an allergic reaction to the triptans and with the ergotamines I get a more severe migraine.

Thanks. I hope everyone has a migraine free weekend.

Blessings,
Wendy R.

Wendy,

I've been a M'r for 40 years now and I can't take the "trips" and had been relying on bed, dark, ice and fiorinol or percocet for my pain until just recently.

I just had a really bad 3 month cycle of M's that I only went 2 half days without a 8 . My neuro just started me using Bextra. (He also had me in the hospital for about a week on an IV steroid treatment.)

Bextra was developed for arthritis but they have found that it seems to be about 2x stronger than Vicodin and it has been showing GREAT results in post surgical pain as well. And the best part is... it is NOT narcotic!

I know that since he started me on that, when I feel that "feeling", I just take a Bextra and usually I am feeling relief within about 20 mins or so.

They come in 2 strengths that I've tried so far. He has written me a script for the 20mgs but he also gave me samples of the 10 mgs. I have found that at times a 10 mg is all I need. I will admit that at other times, I will take a 20 and still 2 hours later have to follow it up with a fiorinol. But by and large, the Bextra is handling the pain for me now.

I have only had ONE FULL completely pain free day in over 3 months but now I'm not in the bed with the blinds closed and wishing for a lobotomy anymore.

It's a thought. You can ask your neuro and see what he/she thinks.

I'll keep you in my prayers.

Lori

I use Darvon and sometimes take a Soma with Zomig. I still take a Soma every night.

I feel so bad for you. You have been through so much! Sometimes if you switch to a different narcotic for a month the old one will start to work again later.

Hang in there. I'm pulling for you!

Hi Wendy,
When vicoden doesn't work for my cramps, I take oxycodone as well, same thing without tylenol I think. When that doesn't work I'm stuck. I always take everything with food/milk now if possible, no matter how sick/etc. I feel, usually at the beginning of the pain I can. Try chewing the pills too, maybe they aren't getting into your system? hpth. Emme

It's not a good idea to chew the pills. The tongue is very vascular and will absorb the drug very fast. That's why some drugs are made to dissolve under the tongue or just in the mouth. Also some drugs have an enteric coating designed to dissolve further in the GI tract.

Ask your pharmicist or doctor first.

My neurologist upped the Vicodin to double strenth what I was taking.

He also added Methergine as a preventative-along with the Amitriptyline that I was already on.....

Has anyone tried the Methergine ?

Thanks again for all that has posted.

Blessings,
Wendy R.
