Who has tried Methergine?

What was the outcome for you?

Cheryl,

My doctor forgot and gave me Methergine. I'm allergic to ergotamines. It made the migraines worse.

If Anna was given this I'll be praying that this medicine will be her miracle pill.

Blessings,
Wendy R.

Dear Wendy:

I remember when that happened to you.

Where is that magic pill for all?

Remember, the drug companies are working on new preventatives. So don't give up hope!

I don't know if this was mentioned to you but,
Methergine is used as a last ditch effort injection to stop post partum hemmorhage. I know that the Ergot that is the effective part of the chemical that will interup a migraine can be wonderful to some will also cause a drastic rise in blood pressure in some, and an actual abortion of a fetus in someone who is not aware of the pregnancy. THe only problem with that is that Methergine effects the musculature that circumvents the uterus, thus shutting the cervix.
If there were something else going on, intrauterune that was not discussed prior to taking the medication, there would be serious problems with trapped products of conception...
I hope this is helpful.

Thank you, Lou:

When I first started reading your post I thought you were going to say, "Methergine is used as a last ditch effort to stop migraine..."

That's how I feel about Methergine. It seems like it is the end of the road for migraine, and very few doctors want to prescribe it.

Dr. Moore only mentioned that it will probably be next on the list. And that is ok with me. He didn't get into the details.

Anna is on Micronor, and she isn't sexually active. She has strong religious beliefs about waiting for marraige, and she would never want to deal with another incurable disease. So we don't worry about pregnancy (if that's what you were referring to).

Being on Micronor sure saves on all the warnings she would surely receive about taking all the meds and not getting pregnant.

Thanks for caring and for posting.

Happy Anniversary!!!

Cheryl,

I've been on methergene at least once, for about six months. It did not work for me. Although my neuro at the time was acting like this was one of the last, few things that I hadn't tried, he was able to come up with some other stuff to try after the methergene didn't work.

Wouldn't it be nice if Dr. Moore would be able to come up with something that helped Anna?

LAST EDITED ON Aug-25-03 AT 07:47 PM (CMT)

Donna has been on it for awhile. She may be off it by now. She was going off the meds they gave her in Houston. She had good results with it but I remember her pharmacist didn't like the idea of it.

I'm going to talk to her this week I'll see what she says.

Duh on me I'm sure you already talked to her about it.

Yes, Kathy,

Donna feels it was her "wonder drug." She did go off it because her migraines have been under control for such a long time. And I think her Tennessee neurologist didn't like the idea of her taking it either!

It is probably more risky for Anna because she has Raynoud's Disease.

But I will be trusting that Dr. Moore will take excellent care of her.
