"Why did triamterene/hctz make my migraine go away?"
I had been given a RX of trimterene/hctz for swelling in my legs last year. Found that when I took it, my migraine went away. I remembered it this time, and since I have hormonal migraines discovered, it worked again. I had a migraine when I woke up, then took the trimterene, and 4 hours later, the migraine was a barely there headache!

Has anyone else discovered this side effect? I looked up the reasons for taking this medicine. It was for high blood pressure and water retention. I have had normal to low blood pressure most of my life: 100 over 70, etc. I haven't been dizzy, no side effects at all!!!

I am soooooooo thrilled I just had to tell you that I found something that worked, this time anyway. I usually have 14 day migraines. I should be on day 5, but took one of these pills last Wed and yesterday. Amazing, I was very bloated and I felt much better after taking this.

I hope it continues to work for the next 9 days!! I actually felt like cleaning my house...wow where do ours lives go when we feel aweful all the time...I sang, and was happy!! I'm counting my blessings and had a great week-end shopping with my daughter too.

So has anyone else taken this medication, and for what and did it help your migraines?

Sarah,
Triamterene is a diuretic. I use to have them as a preventative. Your right ....I can remember a time it actually got rid of a migraine.

My doctor told me to take them 4 days before I started my period. It use to prevent my menstral migraines.

I was told when we retain water it causes pressure in our head and gives us a migraine. Cutting down on salt intake helps too.

6 weeks ago I started taking Microzide ( HCTZ), the thiazide diurectic, for moderately high blood pressure.

For the first three days, I had non-migraine headaches that then went away.
Then, for the first couple of weeks, I lost a lot of water weight, maybe 10 lbs. During this period the number of migraine prodrome and aura events were noticably reduced. But after this period, I gradually regained the weight and the migraine stuff came back.

I assume that I was adapting to the drug and now I am adapted. It seems like it really only helped with my migraines while I adapted to it.

I looked up the actions of thiazides. They conserve calcium while causing a loss of sodium and potassium. Maybe higher blood calcium levels help with migraines.

Thiazides cause dilation of the ateriole ( the smallest arteries before the capillaries), which helps reduce blood pressure and this probably caused the headaches. Maybe when I adapted to this effect it helps relax these vessles and thus reduces migraines?

Thank you for responding! It's Monday night and I am migraine and headache free still! I'm so excited. I've been humming and singing all day. I have so much more energy too. I will see if this works next month too. I will not forget this either. Interesting to know it's been used by at least 2 others.

I hope your week is going great!!

Hi sarah, so glad you found something to work for you! I take Atacand, a blood pressure med to help control my migraines and it has helped a little. I know the Dr.s first choice to try is usually a anti-inflamatory; never worked for me but I'm so glad for you!
