"Pregnancy Blood Test"
Hey,

Do any of you know how soon you can take a blood test and it detect if you are pregnant or not? I know it's a lot sooner than urine tests but I need to know the exact number of days.

Thanks~

Brooke:

I found this for you:

The clinic's blood test or the home test measure -HCG.º Human chorionic gonadotropin, is a hormone made by the pregnancy that can be detected in the mother's blood or urine even before the woman's missed period.

This hormone is what we look for with a "pregnancy test." HCG, which is secreted by the trophoblast after the ovum is fertilized, appears in the blood and urine of pregnant women as early as 10 days after conception, which is one to two days after implantation.

edit:
and this...

Is 10 days after conception too early for a reliable blood test?

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone that is produced by the placenta of women who are pregnant. It is detectable in the blood and urine only within 10 days of fertilization. All blood tests can give you reliable results only after these first 10 days. After the fertilized egg implants, or attaches, to the inside of the uterus or other structure inside the mother, the levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) rise rapidly. The levels continue to increase throughout the first trimester of pregnancy and reach a peak 60 to 80 days after the fertilized egg implants.

Many women have found that their early attempts at detecting pregnancies with home pregnancy tests result in a positive if they have indeed conceived. But even in such women blood pregnancy tests can return a negative. This can be reasoned by understanding that blood pregnancy tests are less sensitive than home pregnancy tests. But they are much more accurate. In simple words, though there is a chance that home pregnancy tests may tell you that you are pregnant, a blood test will tell you are not because they read different parameters of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Your best bet is to either repeat the home pregnancy test for a sure result or to wait till at least 10 days past conception to take another blood test that can be relied upon. You may want to read more about how different are home and blood pregnancy tests in another article that deals with it in detail.

The info above is great...

How late is your period? When did you have intercourse....I am assuming that you know what time you ovulate? If you know when you ovulate then you can count the days from then....

But, there are early home pregnancy tests that are accurate at about "one day late".

I have to ask too...Brooke, how could you be pregnant? Aren't you and your partner on a break? Not to sound nosy but, I really hope you aren't thinkin that having a baby will make him be a better man.....I hope you are okay.

I recommend getting the book:

Our Bodies, Our Selves - It is very informative and good for all women....

THANK goodness!

Phew.

By the way, it is a little known fact that the period itself is "never" late, the length of time between ovulation and menses is always the same...it is actually the ovulation that is late...so, in your case your last ovulation, you would have been under a lot of stress, so this would make your period then come a bit later.

Does that make sense? Most women think it is the other way around....but, the space of time between ovulation and bleeding is always the same...so, if you track your cycle and know that you are under stress, sick..or whatever during the ovulation time then you can be rest assured that it will "seem" as if your period is late.

I think it is about two weeks from ovulation to period, right?
so if your ovulation happened later, the period which will still come two weeks after the ovulation appears to be later.

Well, it really depends on the woman. I ovulate on day 9 or 10 so there is usually 21 days between that and my menses...

But women range ovulation from day 7 to day 20...we are all unique.

Without birth control, I would only get my period every 50 to 60 days! I guess that means I wasn't ovulating very often...
