"Valium question (or Diazepam 5 mg)"
I just got back from the dentist. I am terrified of going to the dentist but this was just for an exam to find out what needs doing. We have no medical coverage and the exam alone was $76.

I need to have some work done and I asked him if he would prescribe me something to relax me each time I come. He prescribed the above medication.

I need to know if any of you take this or have taken it and do you think it will relax me? I have to have one tooth pulled next week and also a lot of scaling and cleaning done in the near future, I am sooo scared.

Tell me I won't worry when I've taken one or two of these pills (please).

Hi Ruth,

I just filled a prescription for two Diazepam pills (5 mg) for my MRI. I have claustrophobia and I am counting on the diazepam doing the trick for me.

I had Valium prescribed for me when I was having my crown lengthening dentistry done recently. It really is a great medication for the situation you are facing.

Be sure you have someone to drive you to and from the dentist. Also, be sure to take the medication soon enough as it takes a bit to get going in your system (if you don't have directions as to when to take them, my suggestion is 1˝ hours prior to your appointment time).

I don't feel dopey on Valium. It just takes away the anxiety that vibrates inside my body (wow, that sounds sort of kinky!). I am fully aware of everything but I just am not frightened.

I hope this helps, Ruth. I am sure others will chime in with similar Valium success stories, too.

Łeslie

Thanks so much Leslie, I feel a little better now. The dental assistant told me that when they do the cleaning and scaling, they will have to dig deep in the gums as I have some periodontal disease which she said is extremely common. That really scared me. I hope they freeze my gums first. I also bet they will hurt afterwards.

I was given 20 pills which cost me $22, and that included antibiotics I have to take before I have a tooth out next week. I seem to remember you paying a lot for 2 pills in another post! I must go back and check it.

Off to bed now, I'm getting a migraine and I think it's from the visit to the dentist. I don't suppose valium help migraines?!!!

Ruth,
Does he have nitrous? That will be the best bet for you. If you are really scared and he doesn't have nitrous you may want to find someone who does. I don't use it often but like to know it's there. I had to have an extraction and used nitrous. I could have cared less what they did to me. There was no way I could have done it without it.
Hang in there
kathy

Ruth,
Yes nitrous oxide is "laughing gas." It's great!! Ryan just had a small filling today with the gas and no injection. He did fine and he is really goosy about the DDS. You feel like you are floating and not really in touch with what is going on. They had to cut my tooth in pieces and dig it out but I didn't care. I just remembered them tugging every once in awhile.

It is a good thing to have if you are anxious. You can control how much you absorb by breathing through your mouth to lessen the effect or strictly through your nose for max effect.

Thanks Kathy, I will ask him when I go on Wednesday if he has this. I'm hoping this migraine will have gone by then, I can't bear to think of having an extraction while migraining.

I agree....Nitrous is the best!!

Everytime I have something major done I ask for it.

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled, like someone else said, they had to break one in pieces to get it out and I can even remember the dentist bringing a stool over and practically getting on tope of me and I didn't even care!!

I could feel him tugging and tugging to get that darn thing out and it was like I was in dreamland!!

One thing I remember is that when it first started taking effect, the music in the background started sounding really funky!

It was really cool though!! I highly recommend it!

Love,

Cindy
