Hormones and Migraine

(February 1997)

Many women find that hormone fluctuations trigger migraine episodes. If you know (or suspect) that you are one of these women, or have a friend or loved one who might benefit, read on.

Madison Pharmacy Associates, Inc. offers a natural hormone replacement program for pre-menopausal, menopausal and post-menopausal women. Saliva samples are collected to measure five primary hormones - estriadol, progesterone, testerone, DHEA and cortisol - as well as a urine test to measure deoxypyridinoline for risk of bone loss. (All testing is done in the privacy of your own home.) The pharmacist then works with your doctor to determine the appropriate compounded prescription. After 30 days, tests are repeated to make sure the dosage is correct. Repeat testing is recommended at least every six months, or whenever you think your prescription needs to be adjusted.

Madison Pharmacy also offers progesterone supplements for women experiencing PMS symptoms. Again, prescriptions are compounded to meet individual needs. They use only natural substances, not the synthetic drugs used in conceptratives (which frequently make migraines worse).

Madison Pharmacy also maintains a list of doctors who use natural hormone therapy to treat PMS and menopause. Testing and prescriptions are covered (at least partially) by many health insurance carriers.
